Welcome back, everybody.
Why do so many people spend so much time and energy hacking into other people's
computers?
Well, some do it for money.
Others do it to protest something, something we talked about in an article back
in September called Hacktivism.
Now still, others hack just for the challenge.
OK. Let's wrap up this lesson with our final reading down on line 22.
(Music).
Hacked!
Even if your account was only sending spam, it's probably wise to send an
apology to those who may have been inconvenienced.
Be a friend.
Sometimes people don't realize they've been hacked.
Now that you have experienced the aggravation of a hacked account, be a friend
to other victims.
If you are receiving spam from a friend, get in touch with them and let them
know.
No matter how it happened, dealing with a hacked account is easier than you
think.
Friends, getting control of your account really is easier than you think.
We've shown you how to get the control back, how to make sure that your account
is not hacked again.
And now we're trying to be polite.
Say you're sorry to your friends who have received many emails from you asking
for money.
That's right.
We said send an apology.
And that... that word "apology" means to... to say you are sorry for something.
So if they've been bombarded with emails asking for money, make sure you send an
email.
Though you might think, "Well, it wasn't asking them for money," do I really
need to?
Yeah. Even if your account was not sending messages asking people for money, it
may have just been sending spam instead.
That's right.
It's still important. It's probably wise to send an apology to those people.
Now we said even if it's not sending... asking for money, you used this word
"spam." What is spam?
Well, the original use of the word "spam" is a meat that people can buy, and
many people might use it instead of real meat.
And so they wouldn't necessarily want it.
Well, the same principle applies to your emails.
Spam mails are emails that are sent to you that you don't want because they are
advertisements or they might also be trying to get people to buy something.
That's right.
So if it's been sending spam, it's probably wise to still send an apology to...
to those people who may have been inconvenienced.
You don't know who was inconvenienced by it.
Yeah, so just send an email to all of your friends tell them: I'm sorry. My
account was hacked.
I apologize for your inconvenience.
To be "inconvenienced" is a state of being troubled or to have a problem or...
and it's often caused by a loss or something like that.
So if you're inconvenienced in your email, maybe you're expecting a specific
email, but your email box is full of this spam, this unwanted mail.
And now you're inconvenienced because you can't get what you want.
Yeah. That's a good way to say it, Kaylah.
Friends, a good way to think about being inconvenienced is it causes you to feel
frustrated because convenient means it's easy to use, it makes you feel happy.
So inconvenient is the opposite.
That's right.
Inconvenience is difficult.
You might have caused your friend some problems.
OK. Now we've seen ways to get your account back, to make sure it doesn't happen
again and to apologize.
Next, be a friend.
Be a friend.
Your apology is the first step in this, but sometimes people don't realize that
they've been hacked.
So even if you're not the one who's been hacked, be a friend.
They might not know.
Exactly, so.
Yeah, you might not realize or see that your account has been hacked.
So now that you have experienced what it feels like, you've experienced the
aggravation of a hacked account, now it's your turn to be a friend to other
victims.
Now an "aggravation" is a trouble or a difficulty.
Now that kind of sounds like inconvenienced.
Inconvenienced is a situation that is causing you problems.
Aggravation is that emotional feeling of that difficulty.
Yeah. Friends, in fact, the verb form of the word Aggravation is to aggravate.
That means to cause someone to feel angry or upset.
So don't let this aggravation... you understand it, you've experienced it, so be
a friend to other victims.
And a victim is someone who is being taken advantage of, the person who is
having problems.
OK. So you see other people suffering, they are victims of malware, you can be a
friend.
If you are receiving spam from them, then get in touch with them and let them
know.
That's how you are a friend.
You know how frustrating it is.
Go back.
Instead of just being like, "Why are they sending me all this junk mail? I don't
want your spam," instead,
go in and send them an email saying, "I think you might've been hacked." That's
what happened to my sister.
She didn't know she was hacked.
And I sent her an email, "Why are you sending me this junk?" And she was able to
change it.
Yeah. Many times people will ask you that.
But oftentimes if you get emails like this from someone, you might get annoyed
and just block them or delete them.
And they will wonder why you never get their emails anymore.
You should let them know.
That's polite.
Because no matter how it happens, or how it happens in your life or in your
friend's life, dealing with a hacked account is actually easier than you think.
Yeah. And friends, especially if you have been through this before, you can help
your friends if their accounts get hacked too.
And let them know it's OK.
It's really easy to get your account back and make sure it doesn't happen again.
Ryan, when your account was hacked, how did you find out?
Oh. Well, I noticed that I could not log in, and I tried to find out what my
password was and found out my email was changed.
So even if I wanted to get my new password, they would just send it to whoever's
email hacked my account, so I didn't know what to do.
I finally had to contact the company and they had some questions that I had
already given them the answers to.
So I gave them the correct answers to those questions, they gave me my new email
and my new password back.
OK. So you had to clean up your account, get that information.
Follow these steps, friends.
I hope these steps have been helpful.
I hope you keep your magazine just in case this ever happens to you.
But right now, friends, go in, update that anti-virus software and get your
passwords to be very robust.
OK. So make sure if you've been hacked, you know how to deal with it now.
And you can help your friends if they get hacked too in the future.
All right. We've learned a lot.
Now friends, it's time to go watch today's skit.
There! Now you have regained control of your account.
And I cleaned up my computer.
Good for you.
Now it's time to improve your passwords.
How?
Well, choose a robust password.
Avoid words that are in the dictionary.
How do I know my password is a good one?
Well, test it using an online password strength checker.
Oh. I'll find a robust password and use it for all my accounts.
Yes... No... No. Then of all your accounts will be at risk.
I'll check my other accounts and change my passwords.
Good. Also, email your contacts and send them an apology.
An apology for what?
Well, someone has been bombarding them with spam from your account.
And they think it came from me.
Yes. Well, maybe they even got messages asking for money too.
Oh, no! My friends have been inconvenienced.
Yes. It's wise to send an apology.
I'll do that right away.
Remember, being hacked is traumatic, but regaining control isn't as hard as you
think.
Thanks. I'll remember.
Hey! Why are you bombarding me with advertisements and junk mail?
Oh, no. I've been hacked!
It's not as bad as you think.
(Music).
(Chinese).
And that concludes our Language Tips today.
I'll see you soon.
Bye-bye.
Having your account hacked into can be a traumatic experience, but dealing with
it isn't as hard as it might seem.
After you gain control of your account, you should clean up your computer,
change your passwords and check your other accounts and make sure they haven't
been affected.
It would also be wise to apologize to all your contacts who've been
inconvenienced.
And if you suspect a friend has been hacked, drop them a note and let them know.
They'll appreciate you looking out for that.
Friends, that's it for me.
Have a great weekend.
And then join us on Monday same time, same place. Take care.
