Welcome back, everybody.
I hope you had a great break.
Now just how successful is the 007 film franchise?
Well, it's been said that over one quarter of the world's population, meaning
one out of every four of you, has seen at least one James Bond film.
James Bond ranks as the second most profitable film franchise right behind Harry
Potter.
OK.
Why do audiences keep coming back for more?
Let's find out as we pick up the reading on line 4.
007: Man of Mystery.
Fans love his charm, high-tech gadgets, expensive cars and his first-class
lifestyle.
He never seems to age.
He's still the same man in his mid- to late-30s that he was when the first novel
was published.
And now fans of the early films can take their kids to experience the excitement
and adventure for themselves.
The 23rd Bond movie, Skyfall, just hit theaters this month.
Dressed in his signature tuxedo, with a gun in hand, James Bond remains the same
stylish man of mystery today that he was 50 years ago.
So friends, we've seen how Bond has changed in his films over the years, but why
exactly do fans love this mysterious yet charming character?
Well, fans love his charm.
He's great, he's fun, he's interesting to watch.
You're interested in him.
And he makes you like him.
But they also really like his high-tech gadgets, expensive cars and his
first-class style.
OK. He does have very cool high-tech gadgets.
Something that is high-tech has a lot of interesting technology in it.
And a "gadget" is a certain device or sometimes machine that you use for a
certain purpose.
Now Bond uses his imagination... the writers... the scriptwriters...
The gadgets in Bond, they're not always real which is why we like them so much.
They seem interesting because we don't have them.
Yeah, they're cool.
He has cool technology.
He has awesome weapons.
And they allow him to do all kinds of really cool things.
He also has really expensive nice cars as well as a first-class style...
lifestyle.
Now "first-class" meaning it is of the highest level, it's the most expensive.
You might think first-class like in airplane.
It's the most expensive seat, but you get the best service.
And that's how Bond lives.
That's right.
He always has the fanciest suits.
He always has the nicest homes.
And he drinks the most expensive drinks.
But he never seems to age!
It's incredible.
He's still the same man in his mid- to late-30s that he was in the very first
novel that was published.
All right.
So his character continues to go... well, change over the years but he doesn't
age.
He's always the same age in every film and every book.
Now that's pretty awesome.
And that can happen because of all the different men that have got the
opportunity to play Bond, as they age, they retire out of it.
And a new man comes in and represents Bond in his mid- to late-30s.
That's right.
Now Kaylah, the first novel was published over, well, almost 60 years ago.
And if it's published, that means it was first written at that time.
So Ian Fleming decided, he wanted a James Bond who is in his mid- to late-30s,
and they've kept it that way ever since.
And now fans of the early films can take their kids to experience the excitement
and adventure for themselves.
I don't know if I would bring my kids to these movies, but they certainly aren't
that bad of films to watch with all kinds of excitement and adventure.
Now even the older people who experienced the first Bond can bring their kids to
experience the newest Bond.
Now we would recommend that your kids be at least high school age before you
start letting them watch Bond.
It is exciting adventure, but there are some things about him that are still a
little questionable.
Now the latest Bond movie, Kaylah, it's the 23rd Bond film.
It's called Skyfall, and it just hit theaters this month.
That's right.
Now we are on... we're using the same Bond we've had for the last couple of
movies.
You might recognize Daniel Craig.
He is in... on the front of our article in our Studio Classroom magazine.
Now we said Bond had dark hair, but Daniel Craig is actually the first blond
Bond.
But his eyes are still piercing blue.
In fact, I think he has the most piercing blue eyes of any of the Bond's actors
that have been played.
So he really is doing a good job, I think.
He is making a good Bond.
That's right.
We will see... we're seeing him now in the 23rd Bond movie, making this Daniel
Craig's third Bond filming experience.
But some things about him have never changed.
That's right.
He is still dressed in his signature tuxedo.
Friends, a "tuxedo" is a type of clothing that men usually wear to very fancy
events, with a dark coat jacket and tie and white shirt and black pants.
That's right.
A tuxedo you wear a bow tie, not a long tie like the one Ryan has on today.
Instead it is a bow tie, which is a small... right by your neck.
You can see Daniel Craig dressed in his Bond tuxedo on page 46 in your Studio
Classroom magazine.
That's right.
This is his signature tuxedo.
That is something that he is known for having, something he is known for
wearing.
What else is he known for?
Well, he has a gun in hand.
If you look through your Bond pictures, you'll see most of the time he's
carrying a gun.
That's right.
He's usually got his gun up next to his face, and he is extremely stylish.
In fact, he is the same stylish man of mystery today that he was 50 years ago.
That's right.
He remains this man of mystery and style.
That means he has stayed the same throughout all this time, even with all these
different characters and writers involved in him.
Well, we have some more information about James Bond, so let's move on over to
the Information Station.
I just love James Bond movies.
They're so exciting.
Do you know the unit he works for, MI6, is a real branch of the British
government?
That's right, Bill.
"M-I" stands for military intelligence, and "6" is the unit that deals with
overseas threats.
Well, to learn more about this man of mystery, let's go over to...
Information Station.
Many famous actors have filled the role of James Bond.
Today it's played by Daniel Craig.
But the most famous and popular James Bond of all time is Sean Connery who
portrayed James Bond in seven 007 movies.
Well, makes sense, doesn't it?
Yes? Seven.
It sure does, Bill.
Well, we have the pleasure of talking with Sean Connery right now.
Welcome, 007.
It's my pleasure to be here.
You gentlemen have quite a bit of information.
Have you considered working in military intelligence?
Well, thank you, Sean.
But that's a bit too dangerous for us.
Sean, I noticed that you often wear a suit when you're on your missions.
Well, being an international spy requires I dress the part.
I need to be charming and handsome.
Hmm, yes, you are.
Now of all the Bond films you made, which one is your favorite?
Well, that's easy.
It's...
Goldfinger.
He's the man, the man with the Midas touch.
He's just too much.
As I was saying, I stop a villain who is trying to control the world's supply of
gold.
Well, Goldfinger is my favorite as well, Sean.
In many of the movies, you need to pilot airplanes and helicopters.
Say, are you really a pilot?
Oh, of course not.
Those are just movies, so.
They just put me in the planes and helicopters and I act like a pilot.
You've had a long, wonderful career, Sean.
How many movies have you starred in?
I've been in 90 films over the past 55 years.
I've been quite busy.
Yes, you have.
Well, Sean Connery, it's been delightful having you here today.
My pleasure, gentlemen.
And we'll see all of you here next time, all of you 007 fans, at...
Information Station.
(Music).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And that's it for today's Language Tips.
Make sure you come back next time for more.
Bye-bye.
James Bond, Agent 007, has been around since the early 50s.
But it wasn't until 1962 that he made his movie debut thwarting the evil plans
of Dr. No.
Six actors have played James Bond over these 50 years, each bringing their own
style to the role.
Sean Connery played the first Bond while the current James Bond is, of course,
Daniel Craig.
He'll be coming to a theater near you with the latest Bond thriller called
Skyfall.
OK, everyone.
Make your weekend great.
And then join us Monday for a different lesson about movies.
Take care.
