Welcome back, everybody.
I hope you had a great break.
Well, when he's not making movies, Chris Hemsworth enjoys spending time with his
wife of Fast Five fame,
Spanish actress Elsa Pataky and their daughter India Rose.
Hemsworth also likes playing sports like rugby.
He likes playing the guitar and listening to music.
OK. Let's talk about what Chris Hemsworth has been up to since filming Thor on
line 9.
Chris Hemsworth - Hollywood's Latest Superhero.
This year, Hemsworth played Thor again in the film The Avengers.
He was one of a group of superheroes assembled to save planet Earth.
That film grossed $1 billion worldwide in just 19 days!
He also starred in another summer film Snow White and the Huntsman.
Audiences can't seem to get enough of him!
A second Thor film, Thor 2, is due out in 2013.
In Thor, he promised, "I'll be back!" And he has kept that promise and continues
to do so again and again.
All right, so.
Now we've seen the character that Chris Hemsworth is most famous for right now -
Thor.
He began in the movie with the same title, and it was extremely successful,
making $449 million in its first weekend at the box office.
But this year, Hemsworth played Thor again in the film The Avengers.
Now this was definitely an advantage of getting a role for the Marvel comic
books because Iron Man and Captain America and Thor,
and all these different characters came together again out of their own movies
to be in The Avengers.
And so he had that opportunity as well.
Exactly, so.
All of these characters that you just listed, Kaylah, are from comic books.
And The Avengers is also a comic book series that combines all those characters.
And so the movie by the same name has all those characters together and they all
work together.
Now he was one of a group of superheroes assembled to save planet Earth.
Now we said he was part of the group already.
What does it mean to be assembled?
Well, if a group of people "assemble," then that means they all come together to
a single place in order to work together towards a same goal.
Now friends, if you've seen The Avengers, you know that they did not want to be
assembled.
It's not always easy to get a group of people together to work from one place
towards one goal, especially when they're all superheroes who have their own
ideas.
Exactly.
Now I love this movie, Avengers.
I thought it was a fantastic movie.
And so here this is actually another opportunity to see Chris Hemsworth's acting
ability.
That's right.
And it was fun.
I enjoyed this movie as well.
It was a really high action and fun movie to watch.
Well, that film, The Avengers, did really well in the box... at box office as
well.
That's right.
It grossed $1 billion worldwide in only 19 days!
That's unheard of.
People all over the world were looking forward to this.
Let's break this sentence apart of it.
We said the film grossed $1 billion.
Now we know the word "gross," usually we think it means something nasty or
disgusting.
But here the word "gross" as a verb means it earns a particular amount of money
before taxes or the cost of whatever it took to make the movie itself.
So your gross income is how much money you make before they take away your
taxes.
So "gross" is that large sum at the very beginning.
Exactly, so.
That... they made a lot of money right away in just 19 days worldwide.
The word "worldwide" means around the entire globe, the entire world.
Just like Studio Classroom.
We're Studio Classroom Worldwide.
It means we're all over.
You can watch us on the Internet, hear us on different radio and television
shows in different places in the world.
OK, so fantastic movie, I loved it, friends.
You haven't seen it?
I recommend it.
You should.
Now Chris also starred in another summer film, right?
That's right.
Not only was he in The Avengers, he starred in another summer film, Snow White
and the Huntsman.
Now we know Snow White from fairy tales.
She's the beautiful young maiden who lives with the little short dwarf men.
Exactly. And so she's with the Huntsman.
Those are men who... and hunt for things and try and find things that they shoot
and kill usually for food.
Now if you know the story of Snow White, the Huntsman is actually the man who is
sent to kill her.
This movie took the fairy tale to a new level.
It was exciting, so exciting that audiences just can't seem to get enough of
Chris Hemsworth and his films.
All right, so.
These are the "audiences" that love him.
"Audience" is the group of people that watch or enjoy something.
That's right.
Well, they can't get enough of him.
And we can't get enough of our grammars, so let's go visit Liz with Grammar on
the Go.
Hi, friends.
Greetings from Australia.
My name is Liz.
And it's time for Grammar on the Go.
I'm here in Australia today because this is where Chris Hemsworth is from.
We read in today's article:
Audiences can't seem to get enough of him!
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Today we're looking at the phrase: can't get enough of.
Usually we use "can't get enough" to talk about not having enough of something,
like:
I can't get enough sleep.
But when we say "can't get enough of something," we're talking about wanting a
lot of something because you like it so much.
In the case of today's sentence, the writer is saying that Chris Hemsworth is so
popular and in such demand because people do really like him.
Now this phrase isn't just used to talk about people.
You can use it to talk about things.
For example:
The school cafeteria sells these delicious cookies, and students can't get
enough of them.
Or: The new TV series was an instant hit; viewers can't seem to get enough of
it.
So give this phrase a try.
What is something that is very popular?
Or maybe you can talk about famous celebrity who is somebody that the public
can't get enough of.
And that's all the time we have for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off.
Bye-bye.
Audiences can't seem to get enough of Chris Hemsworth.
A second Thor film, Thor 2, is due out in 2013.
Yes! I'm excited.
I do love Thor movies.
Well, in Thor, he promised, "I'll be back!" And he has kept that promise and
continues to do so again and again.
So he's been back in The Avengers.
We've seen in other movies.
We're excited to see Thor 2 next year as he comes out one more time.
Exactly. And hopefully we'll continue to do so again and again.
Friends, Chris Hemsworth is an amazing actor.
And I hope, like me, you can't wait to see him again.
Now though, let's go visit the Information Station.
Did you see The Avengers, Bryan?
I sure did, Bill.
And it was action-packed; and the scenes were amazing.
Who was your favorite Avenger?
Wow, that's a tough question, Bill.
I like them all, especially Thor.
Well, to learn more about Thor and some of the other Avengers, let's go to...
Information Station.
Of course, Chris Hemsworth plays the superhero, Thor, in the Avengers.
But do you know where the character Thor comes from?
I sure do, Bryan.
Thor comes from Norse mythology.
These tales of the mighty Thor come from the Scandinavian countries like Sweden,
Norway and even Iceland.
The stories of Thor were first recorded in artwork and jewelry from 700 A.D.
Bill, that's over 1,300 years ago.
And the name Thor comes from the word Thursday, which actually stands for Thor's
Day.
In these old folk tales, Thor did carry a giant hammer to defeat his enemies.
Ah! Get out of there.
And once even a giant snake.
I liked Thor in The Avengers, but I also liked Iron Man.
Me too.
Robert Downey Jr. has portrayed this superhero in two Iron Man movies so far,
with Iron Man 3 set to be released next year.
Some of the equipment that Iron Man uses has actually been tested by the U.S.
Military.
Yes, Bill.
Exoskeletons are metal suits that soldiers put on.
They give them extra strength.
But they can't fly around like Iron Man does in the movies.
No, they can't.
Well, right now we have to fly.
So we'll see you all here next time at...
Information Station.
(Chinese).
And you guys are such a wonderful audience.
I'll see you around.
Bye-bye.
Thank you again, Michelle.
We appreciate those tips.
Now with his good looks, big muscles, baritone voice and his ability to save
mankind from evil enemies,
Australian actor Chris Hemsworth has become Hollywood's latest A-list superstar.
If you're one of the few people in this world who missed him playing Thor on the
big screen, don't worry.
You'll have another chance to see him in Thor 2, coming to a theater near you
later next year.
Friends, make the rest of your Friday fantastic.
And then join us tomorrow for a new lesson.
Take care.
