Welcome back from the break, everyone.
The traditional Gaelic social gathering, which includes folk music, dancing,
storytelling and poetry, is called a ceilidh.
Now if you saw the movie Titanic, you might remember that the third class
passengers held a party on the lower decks of the ship,
which Jack and Rose attended. Remember that?
Well, that was a ceilidh.
OK, back in Cape Breton.
One of the best times to go to a ceilidh is during the Celtic Colours Festival.
Let's read about it now on line 5.
Nova Scotia's Cape Breton.
Celtic Colours.
The best place to experience Cape Breton music is at the Celtic Colours
international Festival.
This year's event will take place from October 5 to 13.
Featuring local and international artists, the festival is a celebration of
Celtic music and culture.
Tens of thousands of visitors will enjoy songs, dances, fiddle players,
storytellers and more.
Workshops, lectures and demonstrations will be offered on Celtic music, art and
history.
Cape Breton has preserved music and dance from Scotland from centuries ago.
And we're so thankful they did because we can experience it today.
But this is not the only part of culture that has been preserved.
That's right, friends.
We've learned a lot about the music.
We've seen a lot of that influence that came from Scotland.
But what are we looking at next?
We're looking at how it's been preserved and how we can celebrate this part of
the culture today.
And that is by this event called Celtic Colours.
OK, Celtic Colours.
Friends, the word "Celtic" means something that comes from European's past,
mostly in Ireland, Scotland and the Welsh countries.
That's right.
Now friends, you might look at that word and think it is said "Celtic" because
of the basketball team.
But that is the only time it is pronounced that way.
Every other situation you pronounce this with a hard "C," and that is Celtic.
Exactly.
And this island here in Nova Scotia does have some Celtic history since many
Scottish people moved there in the 1800s.
Now the best place to experience Cape Breton music is at this Celtic Colours
International Festival.
OK. So we've heard a lot about the music, friends.
Maybe you would like to see more and get to listen to it there, you can go to
this festival.
Now Ryan, we see that the word "colour" is spelled with an O-U-R.
But we learn to spell with just an O-R.
What's the difference?
That's true, Kaylah.
The word "colour" in British English is spelled with an O-U-R.
And so since this is coming from European history, that is the way it is
spelled.
That's right.
Now friends, in American English, we've taken the U out. We just use the O-R.
But this is the correct spelling for this international festival.
Yes. Don't make the mistake to miss pronounce it as... I've done before.
Oh, nice, Ryan.
It is about the Celtic Colours.
Now this year this special event will take place from October 5 through 13.
OK. This is a special event, friends.
And this, if you have some time to travel, is something you can go to.
It's happening very soon.
That's right. It's only four days away.
So get on that.
All right.
Well, it features local and international artists.
And this festival is a celebration of Celtic music and culture.
OK. So we see that it is a... it is going to feature local and international
artists.
To "feature" something means to include someone or something as an important
part of an event or an occasion.
So friends, we often say your "feature" presentation, meaning the main reason we
are there, or the most important reason we are there.
So I think another way of saying this are these performers we can consider VIP.
Ooh. Now this sounds like a lot of fun, Kaylah.
It's a celebration, so it's a party.
And this is something that people can go enjoy, and there's going to be Celtic
music which is fun to dance to.
And... this sounds like something I think would be a lot of fun to join; maybe
you'd like to go too.
That's right.
You could experience Celtic culture, that blending of all the Scottish and Irish
and Welsh and Northern Britain countries,
all that culture coming together in one place both with local artists from Cape
Breton as well as welcoming artists from around the world.
Yes. You can join tens of thousands of visitors who will also enjoy those songs,
dances, fiddle players, storytellers and more.
I think there is so much fun going on here.
It's... I love dancing, I love upbeat music.
And the idea of seeing a storyteller just sounds like fun.
Yeah, it does.
That's not something I usually think of as happening at a festival.
But Kaylah, storytelling is a big part of Celtic culture, isn't it?
That's right.
That's how history has been passed down.
Someone in a very exciting and expressive way tells you a story, tells a story
to a large audience.
And there are professional storytellers who are very good and make it very
interesting.
OK. Well, you can also experience workshops, lectures and demonstrations there
as well.
Now these demonstrations would be showing you how to do something.
They will be offered on both Celtic music, art and history - so all three of
these categories.
Now a demonstration, as they said, is a way of doing something, is a way of
teaching so that they show you how you do it.
OK. And of course, there are lectures, which is a formal talk someone gives.
And workshops, which are classes you can join.
These are all things you can take part in.
OK. Let's break them apart, though.
A "lecture" would be a formal setting of someone talking to a large group of
people, but just talking.
And then a workshop is a large group of people all getting to do it together.
And then a demonstration is just watching how it's done, not necessarily being
told the whole process.
Exactly. And you're able to learn these things about Celtic music, art and
history.
That's right.
So it'd be exciting.
You can learn as well as experience just the lively and fun and the energy that
comes from this kind of culture.
Yeah, it sounds like a lot of fun.
This is a big celebration, friends.
You can join this if you're able to travel very quickly.
That's right.
It would be a fun and exciting experience.
And to get a taste of the music from this island, let's watch this video.
(Music).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And we're running out of time.
I'll see you soon. Bye-bye.
Now there's a good reason why the organizers include the word "colours" in the
Celtic Colours Festival name.
They want you to know that the first two weeks of October are when Cape Breton's
fantastic fall colors are on display.
The red, yellow, orange and purple leaves create some breathtaking scenery
making traveling to and from festival events around the island even more
enjoyable.
Now speaking of traveling around Cape Breton Island, that's exactly what we'll
be doing tomorrow.
So please join us then, same time, same place.
Take care.
