Hi, friends.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
My name is Steve.
For the past two days, we've been in the Eastern Canadian province of Nova
Scotia.
Nova Scotia, or New Scotland, has a lot in common with the old Scotland in
Europe, like the language, the music and the culture.
And just like Scotland, Nova Scotia has a physical beauty that is exceptionally
breathtaking.
So today we're going to get out and take in some of the scenery; and you're
invited!
So join us today as we tour Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island in today's reading
"World's best road trip" on page 13.
Nova Scotia's Cape Breton.
The world's best road trip.
Driving Cape Breton's Cabot Trail offers one of the best ways to truly see the
island.
The Lonely Planet travel guide calls it "one of the best road trips in the
world!" The trail joins eight major communities as it winds through fishing
villages and across rugged hilltops.
Along the way, you can take part in a variety of activities.
Hello, everyone.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And we are in our final day in Cape Breton in Nova Scotia exploring the culture
and the beautiful landscape that make up this unique island.
OK, Kaylah.
Let's talk about what we know so far.
We've seen that Cape Breton is on the northeastern side of Canada's province
called Nova Scotia.
And we know that this place has a rich history that comes from European history.
That's right.
It's a beautiful island of varying landscapes of mountains and cliffs, rolling
hills and beautiful sea,
but also has a beautiful culture that goes with it, a blending of the Irish,
French, the Scottish and the Welsh peoples.
That's right.
And of course, this is all Celtic culture arrived there in the 1800s.
And Kaylah, it was preserved on this island, even more so than it was preserved
in Scotland and in Ireland.
So this is a great place to experience it.
That's right, the music.
You can attend their Celtic Colours Festival and experience their music and
culture as well as just getting to learn about it and enjoying all that they
have to offer.
All right. So this sounds like a fun place to go,
especially if you're able to travel very soon to visit this festival because
they've got workshops, they have demonstrations and lectures.
But if not, if you can't get there in time for Celtic Colours, don't worry about
that.
No fear, my friends, because there's so much more you can do in Cape Breton.
In fact, it is described as having the world's best road trip.
Ooh. I love road trips.
And friends, if you remember recently, we... we talked about road trips.
And road trips are when you take a trip in a car.
That's right, usually with friends - hopefully people you like - because you're
stuck in the car with them for a long time.
But Kaylah, this is an island.
How can you take a road trip to an island?
Well, I don't think it's to the island; I think it's around the island.
OK. So friends, we're going to see how this island has the best road trips
around the island.
Now driving Cape Breton's Cabot Trail offers one of the best ways to truly see
the island.
We saw it's called "Cabot Trail." We remember that John Cabot.
He's the explorer that we say founded it in 1497.
So there's the name "Cabot." Now what's a trail?
OK. Well, a "trail" is a path.
Usually we use this word to describe a path that you walk on.
But that's not always the case.
That's right.
A trail is the... the way you go, the journey toward something, the path that
you're taking.
So the road would then be your trail if you're on a road trip.
Yes. And this - the trail - has a certain purpose.
And that purpose is for you to see the beauty of the island and some of the
history.
Perhaps this is where John Cabot traveled.
That's right.
Now it says "to truly see the island." That means... "truly" here means you can
see it for all that it has to offer.
Well, why do we call it this?
The Lonely Planet travel guide calls it: one of the best road trips in the
world.
OK. Now if the Lonely Planet travel guide calls it the best place, I think I
might believe them.
That's right.
Lonely Planet is one of the most popular and well-known travel guides that are
out there today.
I personally love using Lonely Planet.
I use it when I travel to different countries.
I even have a Lonely Planet Taiwan to understand where we are right now.
Exactly, because we live in Taiwan and we want to see more of Taiwan.
And these travel guides give you the chance to see other things there that maybe
you would not have known about.
That's right.
What's exciting about a travel guide is it tells you how to get to places that a
tour bus would not take you,
how to visit and see the culture and the island for what it truly is.
You get to really see what it is, not just what the tour groups might want to
show you.
Right. Friends, and the people who work for this company, they travel around the
world to try and find the best places.
So they would know if this is the best road trip in the world.
Well, let's find out why they think it is.
They say the trial joins eight major communities as it winds through fishing
village and across rugged hilltops.
OK. So it's winding through the island.
And we see that there are fishing villages, hilltops, a lot to see.
That's right.
"Winding" means it is twisting and turning and going through.
And you get to see eight of the large communities as well as several smaller
ones.
Yes. And of course, a hilltop is just a small hill, and you get to the top of
that hill.
And I imagine it's a beautiful view from up there.
OK. Well, along the way on this trail, you can take part in a variety of
activities.
Ooh, a variety of activities, which means you can get out and explore this
island and this culture for what it really is.
You get to see it and experience it.
And this road taking this specific trip down Cabot Trail takes you to all these
different places so you can take part in activities.
OK. So when you're taking part, that means you're doing something, you're not
just watching or looking.
You get to enjoy it, be a part of it.
Now I want to find out what these activities are.
But friends, we need to visit the Chat Room first.
Hey, Ken.
You seem to be at a loss.
Is there anything I can help with?
Hey, Bryan. Um, do you have any tour guides here at the library?
Tour guides?
Um, Ken, do you want a tour of the library?
A tour? No. I want to look at some tour guides for travel ideas.
Oh. You mean you want to look at a travel guide.
Travel guide?
So what's the difference between the two?
You know, Doris has traveled a lot.
So let's ask her about this.
Oh, OK.
A tour guide is a person who shows you around while a travel guide is a guide
book.
If you're looking for someone to help you in your vacation, you could hire a
tour guide.
For the more adventurous, you may prefer reading a guide book and exploring on
your own.
Oh. So one is a person, and the other is a book.
You got it.
Hey, Bryan, have you ever been on tour?
Well, hmm... No, Ken, I don't think so.
I'm not in a band or anything else that would go on tour.
A band? No. I mean have you ever been on tour with a tour guide?
Oh. You mean have I been on a tour.
I thought you meant the other kind of tour.
Which is?
Bands, orchestras and actors all go on tour and stop to perform in many
different cities.
That's much different from going on a tour.
When you go on a tour, or take a tour, it means you visit a place.
What kinds of places do we take tours of?
You could take a tour of a museum, an art gallery, a city or country.
And whenever you go somewhere new and want to learn more about it, you can take
a tour.
Well, now that I know the differences, could you show me some of the travel
guides you have here in the library?
I'd love to, Ken.
I'll be right back.
Thanks, Bryan.
