Hi, everybody.
Welcome back from the break.
Well, Cape Breton's Cabot Trail is named after one of the earliest Europeans to
land in Canada - Italian explorer Giovanni Caboto.
If you want to drive the Cabot Trail, the local people suggest setting aside
three to five days to enjoy all that the 300-kilometer route has to offer.
OK. Let's wrap up the lesson with this final reading, Along the trail, at the
top of page 14.
Nova Scotia's Cape Breton.
Along the trail.
Whale-watching trips thrill visitors with sightings of whales, dolphins and
bears.
Kayaking trips offer spectacular views of rock formations, waterfalls and sea
caves.
Golfing is a special treat on a number of world-class golf courses.
Hike one of the 25 trails in beautiful Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
Try saltwater or freshwater fishing, or just enjoy fresh seafood at one of the
many restaurants.
In the winter you can ski, and in the summer you can swim.
There's no wrong turn when you visit Cape Breton, one of the world's most
beautiful islands.
All right, friends.
We are now traveling along the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island off of Nova
Scotia.
Hmm. That's right.
Now we're taking our trip down what the Lonely Planet calls: the best road trip
in the world.
We get to see eight large communities as well as several fishing villages and
take part in a variety of activities.
Now what kind of activities, I wonder.
OK. Well, along the trail, you can have all kinds of activities such as
whale-watching trips.
Those would definitely thrill visitors with sightings of whales, dolphins and...
bears?
Hmm. Well, a whale-watching trip means you can go out in a boat,
and you go find where the whales are because you can't really see whales from
land very well.
So you go out and hope to have a sighting.
OK. So along this trail you might stop at a fishing village,
and then you would have a sighting, which is... that simply means you're able to
see something for a certain period of time.
You'd see whales - we know those are very large mammals, or animals, that live
in the ocean - and also dolphins, similar to whales but a little bit smaller.
But whales and dolphins are both sea animals.
You find them in the ocean.
But bears? Bears live on land.
So taking this road trip you'd not only get to see the ocean and all the ocean
life out there,
but also get to see the rugged and wild part that makes up the land of this
island.
Uh Kaylah, have you been whale-watching before?
Hmm, have I been whale-watching?
I... I don't think I have.
Oh, really?
You should.
I've done it before.
But I can tell you, I definitely didn't see any bears.
That's probably true.
This is a uniquely whale-watching experience because you get to see both land
and sea animals.
Oh, yeah. It sounds fantastic.
So friends, this is one of many stops you can make.
What else is there?
Well, there are kayaking trips that offer spectacular views of rock formations,
waterfalls and sea caves.
Now "kayaking" is a fun and exciting activity.
It takes place in a small boat, very similar to a canoe.
It's small and shallow.
But a kayak has a covering over the top of it.
So you get into the boat and then you pull a covering on the top so the water
does not get in.
And then you have your paddle and there's a... a paddle on both ends.
And so you do this rotation with your arms, so you paddle on the right side and
then the left side, and then right side...
It's very difficult to do but very, very rewarding.
Now Kaylah, I know you've done kayaking before.
And I know that when you did, you were able to see a lot of cool rock
formations.
And a "formation" is simply the way that something is shaped naturally.
That's right.
I got to see very cool rock formations while kayaking in Thailand.
It was a fun experience.
And we got to see sea caves there as well.
Now you can see these all in Cape Breton.
A sea cave.
We know a cave is the hollowed out room on the side of a mountain or in the
earth, usually made up of rocks.
And a sea cave means it's right there beside the ocean.
OK. Well, if this all sounds too exciting for you, friends, there is golfing as
well.
And that is a special treat on a number of world-class golf courses.
That's right.
Now "world-class" meaning it is of the highest quality, and people know of them
and enjoy them.
From all over the world they would come to enjoy these beautiful golf courses.
OK. You can also hike on one of the 25 trails in beautiful Cape Breton Highlands
National Park.
OK. You can go for a hike.
Now to go on a "hike" means you go for a long walk, especially in the
countryside.
So you're not in the city.
So hiking is when you're out enjoying nature, going for a very long walk.
Usually you do a hike for a day trip.
It doesn't take... it doesn't have to take a couple of days.
You can do it in probably one day.
And you can enjoy 25 different trails.
And remember, trails are the path that you take.
OK. And friends, you can go to Highlands National Park.
A "highland" area is an area of land with a lot of mountains.
Friends, you can see where this national park is in Cape Breton on page 12.
That's right.
And friends, you can imagine that in this national park, this is where those
rugged and rough and wild terrains are.
So while you're on your road trip, make sure you stop in Highlands National
Park.
Get out of your car, get your legs moving and enjoy the beautiful scenery on a
hike.
OK. Remember, this is all on the same road that will take you to all of these
places.
You can also try saltwater or freshwater fishing.
Now this is probably something my dad would enjoy the most.
You can see pictures of fishing on page 14 in your Studio Classroom magazine.
Saltwater meaning in the ocean; freshwater meaning on land in rivers and
streams.
My dad would love this.
And I think you would too, Ryan.
Oh, I love fishing, especially saltwater fishing.
But freshwater is fun too.
But even, friends, if you don't like to go fishing or don't know how, you can
just enjoy fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants.
And I think that's what I would choose.
Though I enjoy being out on the ocean in a boat, I don't enjoy the fishing part
so much.
It makes me a little sick.
So... I love seafood, though.
So this'll be a great option for me - is to go to one of the restaurants to get
fresh seafood.
All right.
Well, let's say you travel here in the winter, which is coming up soon, you can
ski here.
And in the summer, you can just swim.
So friends, I said in the beginning, it may be too far north, you'd think
there's not much to do.
It's too cold.
But here we prove you wrong.
During the winter, you can ski and enjoy the mountains.
And in the summer, you can dive right on into the ocean and enjoy your own
swimming adventures.
All right.
If you are "skiing," friends, especially if it's on the snow, that means you are
sliding down the snow with boards on your feet.
Sometimes you can ski in water too.
That's right.
You travel on two small boards connected to your feet, whether down a hill or
cross-country or on top of the water.
OK. There's no wrong way you can turn, friends, when you visit Cape Breton, one
of the world's most beautiful islands.
Well, friends, we've enjoyed exploring Cape Breton's culture, landscape and
adventures that it has to offer with you.
Thank you so much for joining us.
Now let's watch today's skit.
Wild, rugged, harsh.
Soft and beautiful.
Ah. These words describe Cape Breton Island.
This island is Canada's jewel of the east.
Shh.
It is one of Canada's best-kept secrets.
But it's not a secret anymore.
Rolling hills, towering cliffs and spectacular views.
Yes. This place is an untouched paradise.
Driving the Cabot Trail is one of the best road trips in the world.
Aye. It winds through fishing villages and across the rugged hilltops.
And along the way you can stop and go kayaking.
And you can also go whale-watching.
You're never very far from the ocean.
Aye. And you're never very far from the music.
Yes. Yes, music.
Music is the glue that holds us together.
Aye, aye.
We'll be driving for hours to dance for a good fiddle player.
A good fiddle player like me!
Scottish musicians travel here to learn traditional music.
Ah. Experience lively music at Celtic Colours International Festival.
Oh! Enjoy songs, dances, fiddle players, storytellers and more!
Join workshops and lectures on Celtic music, art and history.
This is a beautiful island.
And there's so much to do.
Let's go hiking.
No. Let's do a step dance.
Let's do both.
Aye.
(Chinese).
And I guess that's it for today's Language Tips.
Keep up the good work, and I'll see you soon.
Thank you, Michelle.
We appreciate that.
Now one of Canada's best-kept secrets is Cape Breton Island in northern Nova
Scotia.
Cape Breton's unique history gives it a culture very Scottish in flavor.
More than the Gaelic language, it's the old country music that acts as the glue
to hold the people of Cape Breton together.
If you visit Cape Breton, be sure to reserve some time to travel along the Cabot
Trail.
It's one of the best road trips in the world.
OK, friends. Please join us tomorrow when we discover how to see with sound.
We'll see you then.
Take care.
