Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today.
My name is Steve.
We're on our second day of a DO IT YOURSELF feature about planning for a natural
disaster.
And did you notice planning for a natural disaster is a lot like planning for a
financial disaster?
Both require some forethought.
And both require that you set something aside for future use.
So when a disaster strikes, don't be caught with nothing in your survival
account.
Start making deposits now so that you'll have something to withdraw when tough
times come.
One way to do that is by making a disaster kit.
Let's read about it under "Preparing to survive" on page 21.
(Music).
Preparing for Disasters.
Preparing to survive.
Then create a family disaster kit.
It should include everything your family needs to survive for at least three
days.
Place your kit in a bag so you can carry it if you need to evacuate.
When preparing it, remember that different people have different needs.
Includes special items necessary for elderly or young members of your family.
Don't forget your dog.
Pets are important members of the family with their own special needs.
Decide how you will care for your pet in an emergency.
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us right here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
My name is Ryan.
Friends, we are back in our DO IT YOURSELF article.
And we're giving you some important information that could help you survive in
case there are... or is a disaster.
That's right.
If your family unfortunately experiences a disaster, are you prepared for the
worst?
We hope that we don't have to face the worst.
We're always hoping and praying for the best.
But sometimes things happen, and you should be prepared.
You might not be able to predict disasters, but it is important to be prepared.
And the first tip that we gave you was, I think, one of the most important - to
communicate with your family.
That's right.
You need to all be understanding the same thing.
So the first two things we know is you need to make sure you have an evacuation
plan.
If you have to evacuate and leave, have two different places your family can
meet:
one that is close to your home, and another that is outside of your
neighborhood.
And what was our second tip?
Our second tip is to have a contact person that lives outside of your area so
that you can call them easier.
OK. So you have a way of communicating with each other, which is extremely
important.
You don't want to be wandering the city wondering where your child is.
So make sure you have this set up.
And everyone - both old and young - know these places and contact numbers.
Now the next way to survive is what?
Well, Kaylah, we need tools to survive.
So we're going to show you how to prepare to survive.
If you survive, that means you continue living.
And I know you all want to do that.
Oh, yes.
We definitely want to live through even the worst disasters.
So, start... you've got your evacuation plans, you've got your contact person.
Now create a family disaster kit.
Now that's a small word for a very important meaning.
A K-I-T is said "kit." And what is that?
Well, a "kit" is a set of things or tools that you can use for a certain
purpose.
It could be things like clothes or food or things like medicine to help you heal
in a disaster.
You can buy a sewing kit at different places that comes with needles and thread,
all the little pieces.
You have a medicine kit that's got band-aids and ointments and medicines in it.
Have a disaster kit.
Now you should include everything your family needs to survive in this kit.
But they need to be able to survive for at least three whole days.
Now one of the first things you might hear putting in a disaster kit should be
water because you might be surprised to find out that if there is a big
disaster,
it would be very difficult to find clean water to drink.
That's right.
So make sure you go through all of your family's needs so they can...
Whatever they would need, if there's medicines or foods or clothing, you need to
make sure these are in your kit.
Then once you've collected all these items, place your kit - all these things -
in a bag.
So if you have to leave in an emergency, you can grab it.
That's right.
If you have to evacuate, you can carry this skit with you because you will need
it to help you survive.
Even if there's a flood, even if there is a fire, it doesn't matter what it is,
you should have this kit prepared because you don't know what will happen.
Now when you are preparing it, remember that different people have different
needs.
That's extremely important.
Don't just pack what you want.
Pack what everyone would need.
Exactly. And so remember, not just for certain like the kids in your family, the
adults need to be taken care of too.
So take care of yourself.
Make sure you have clothes.
Make sure you have water and food.
Maybe tools, things you'll need in case you need to get out of a house or get
into a car, something like that.
Now include special items necessary for elderly or young members of your family.
So if you have children, make sure you have all the right medicines and food and
water supplies that they might need.
But also for the elderly in your family, it could be easy to forget they have
special needs as well.
That's true.
"Elderly" is referring to older people, people who are aging and sometimes need
a little bit of help.
So the elderly and the young in your family have special needs.
But they're not the only members of your family with special needs.
Don't forget your dog.
OK. So we're using "dog" here, but this really just means any pets that you want
to keep safe.
Pets are also important members of your family.
And like Kaylah said, they do have their own special needs.
That's right.
You need to take specific things for dogs or for cats or for birds that maybe a
human wouldn't need.
So decide how you will care for your pet in an emergency ahead of time.
This is a good way to being prepared.
That's true.
And Kaylah, I think many people kind of forget about this.
During the emergency, if they haven't prepared a plan for their dog, then they
might not be able to take care of the dog as well.
That's right.
So it's important to be prepared for them as well.
We have some more tips on being prepared for disaster right after we watch
today's skit.
Earthquake, fire, flood... disasters can happen to anyone.
Are you ready for the worst?
I... I am ready.
Our family had a meeting, and we are prepared.
Really!
Where is your disaster kit?
My... disaster kit? Uh, what's that?
It's things you need to survive.
Pack what you need for at least three days!
That's a lot of stuff - water, food, flashlight, radio...
Clothes, medicine, glasses.
Yes! Shoes, money, keys.
Put all those things in a bag so you can carry it.
OK, OK.
I'll pack a disaster kit.
Then I'll be prepared.
There's one more thing.
What's that?
Don't forget about Fluffy.
Oh, my pet! I won't.
My pet is an important member of my family.
Yes. Pets may not be permitted in emergency shelters.
Well, then what should I do?
Well, find someone who can care for Fluffy.
You may want to create a special emergency kit.
Oh. I'll do that right away.
Then I'll be ready for the worst.
Good.
Remember to practice your emergency plan and update it as necessary.
Oh, I will.
Disasters, we can't prevent them.
But we canprepare.
