Hi, everybody. Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today.
My name is Steve.
Well, this month's FESTIVALS feature honors one of the oldest, most famous
fruits of all time - the apple.
Apples come in so many different flavors and varieties, from crunchy, tart green
apples to sweet, crisp, juicy red apples. Mmhm.
And there are so many ways to enjoy apples.
You can enjoy apples in a pie, in a salad or right off the tree.
Apples are delicious and nutritious.
Could nature possibly improve upon this amazing fruit?
I think not.
Why don't we jump into our lesson now on page 30 and celebrate the apple.
Celebrating the Apple.
Enjoy an apple today.
There's nothing as good as the taste of a fresh, ripe apple, especially in the
fall.
Apples grow in many parts of the United States and in many other countries
around the world.
In the regions where apples grow, they play a central role in local recipes and
traditions.
Health benefits.
For years, people have said, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." And
scientific evidence shows this may actually be true!
Apples have high amounts of fiber, which can help prevent many health problems.
(Music).
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
And... this is Ryan.
Ryan, is that apple taste good?
Yes, this is an apple, Kaylah.
Why... why are you eating an apple during Studio Classroom?
Well, first of all, apples are delicious.
And besides, today's article is all about Celebrating the Apple.
Hmm! So enjoy an apple today.
That looks like what you're doing.
Yeah. Would you like one, too?
Yes!
Here you go, Kaylah, an apple just for you.
Thank you. This Apple is red on one side and green on the other.
This looks delicious.
Well, apples are delicious.
Friends, there is nothing as good as the taste of a fresh, ripe apple, well,
especially in the fall.
That's right.
Apples grow in many parts of the United States.
Now the fall is a great time to be picking apples because that's when they are
the ripest.
That's true.
The word "ripe" means that it is ready to eat and most delicious.
That's right. And there's that crispy crunch that we just heard Ryan eating his
food.
You can hear the crunch of an apple.
When you bite in, it's all juicy and fills your mouth with delicious apple
juice.
Well, they grow all around the world and especially in many parts of the United
States as well.
Apples are very delicious fruits.
You can find in many different places.
That's right.
That's what's really special about apples is they grow all over the world, not
just in one country or one kind of country.
Tropical or cold, apples can grow really anywhere.
So they're... they're fun to eat.
But they play a really important part in culture where they're grown as a large
part of the... of the culture and society in that area.
Yeah. Well, we see: In regions where apples do grow, like Kaylah said, they play
a central role in those local recipes and traditions.
OK, so we say "in the regions." And "regions" refers to the areas, not just
where an apple might grow but where they grow a lot of apples.
OK. And if they play a central role, that means they are very important to,
well, things like their recipes and their traditions.
That's right.
So "central" meaning the very center of, or the core - like an apple has a core
- that apple can be a major part of recipes and traditions.
All right.
Now friends, a "recipe" is the list of ingredients and the way that you put
those ingredients together to make a food.
So it's the different parts of a certain dish.
I think one of my favorite apple recipes would be apple pie.
It's an American tradition, and it is delicious!
Oh, me too. I love apple pies.
Really, really good.
And so now we're going to see some of the beautiful things about apples.
And remember, this is our FESTIVALS article, so we'll be talking all about
celebrating apples.
That's right.
But first we need to talk about the health benefits.
The apple is not just exciting because it's delicious, but it's also very good
for you.
There's a lot of benefits.
And "benefits" means positive things that you can get out of something.
All right, friends.
So for the rest of today, we're going to be talking about many reasons why
apples are good for you and you should enjoy them.
Now for years, people have said, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." That's
a very common and very useful idiom in English.
We say it very often when we're referring to food.
And apple is referred to as one of the healthiest foods.
Yeah. So this phrase basically means it's good to eat healthy, and that way you
yourself will stay healthy.
If you eat an apple every day, then you won't have to go to the doctor.
That's right.
It doesn't actually mean the doctor stays far away from you.
It means you don't need to go to the doctor because you're healthy.
Well, this has always been said.
This has been said for years.
And recently scientific evidence shows that that might actually be true.
OK. So evidence is something that shows whether or not something is true.
And here scientific evidence might prove that apples are very healthy for you
and can keep you healthy.
That's right.
So it might be true, let's find out how.
Well, first of all, apples have high amounts of fiber in them.
OK. So "fiber" is something that is in food that helps you digest it very well
and helps your body use all of the energy in that food.
And that'll help you a lot.
That's right.
Fiber is a very important part of your diet.
Usually we think of fiber as coming from grains and vegetables.
But this is a fruit, the apple.
This one right here will have a lot of fiber in it.
You can't see fiber.
You can't really taste fiber.
But it's a very important part.
It helps your body "digest." And that means to take the food apart on the
inside.
OK. So apples are full of fiber; it's great for you.
And if you eat apples, then that might prevent many health problems that you
might have.
That's right.
So there are lots of health problems, sicknesses or issues you might have that
eating an apple can actually help you with.
And we're going to talk about how fiber helps that and what are other benefits
the apple has.
But first, we need to visit the Chat Room.
Hi, Ken.
How was your lunch?
Oh, it was really good.
I met a friend at a nice restaurant.
Then on the way back, I stopped at a farmers' market and bought these apples.
Oh, good idea.
I'm sure they'll be delicious.
You know, after all, it is apple season right now.
Well, they certainly look good.
Hey, Bryan, I wanted to ask you a question.
At the restaurant where I had lunch, the menu said they had seasonal vegetables
as a side dish.
Does that mean that the vegetables were seasoned or that they were in season?
Well, that's a great question, Ken.
The adjective "seasonal" refers to fruits or vegetables that are in season,
meaning they become ripe this time of year.
It's different from the verb "to season," which means to add spices to improve
the flavor of something.
OK. That makes sense.
I also wanted to ask you about something I saw in the newspaper.
OK. What was that?
Well, I thought the word "ripe" meant that fruits or vegetables were ready to be
eaten.
But this newspaper article said that a man lived to a ripe old age.
That means that he lived a long and full life, probably into his 80s or even
90s.
I see.
So is saying someone is at a ripe old age more positive than saying they're old?
Definitely.
You know, another idiom that uses the word "ripe" is: The time is ripe.
You know, I think I know that one.
It means that it's the right time for something to happen, right?
That's right.
For example, when the economy is doing well, you could say the time is ripe to
start a business.
I see.
Well, thanks for that help, Bryan.
Hey, by the way, would you like an apple?
I sure would.
Mmm, this looks good.
And you know, the time is ripe for having a snack.
Thanks.
