Welcome back, everybody.
By far, the biggest apple producer in the world is China.
That country produces almost half of all the apples sold in the world.
Coming in at a distant second is the U.S., producing just a seventh of what
China grows.
Iran, Turkey and Russia round out the top five positions.
OK. Let's continue our apple celebration over at the top of page 32.
(Music).
Celebrating the Apple.
The heart of these festivals is food - especially apples.
Many treats made from apples, such as pies, apple pancakes and apples dipped in
caramel are available for sampling.
Cider, a drink made of pressed apples, and apple butter, a thick spread made of
cooked apples, are essential to many festivals.
Some festivals are even named for one of them.
People of all ages will enjoy the food and fun of these lively events that
celebrate the apple.
(Music).
Friends, the heart of these festivals, of course, is the food.
We're talking about apple festivals and why people actually want to celebrate,
not just eating apples, but also things like history and the benefit of the
local regions where apples are grown.
That's right. We said they celebrate history.
But of course the focus, the heart of these is the food - especially apples.
Which makes sense... it's an apple festival!
OK. Well, I just used the phrase "the heart of the festivals," Kaylah.
You've talked about the center of something.
What about the heart?
The heart refers to the same idea - the core, that middle central part is kind
of the reason for something.
It's what causes the passion and excitement.
OK. So it's an apple festival.
Of course things like the history and the people who used to live there,
pioneers, that's interesting.
But we really want to talk about the food.
OK. Let's talk about the food.
Not just barrels of apples, but there're so many other kinds of ways to eat
apples.
Many treats are made from apples.
That's right.
Earlier Kaylah talked about apple pies.
Well, there are also apple pancakes and apples that are dipped in caramel.
OK. So friends, if you take your magazine... it might make your mouth water just
a little bit, and look at page 32.
In the corner there you see an apple pie.
And if you ever have the chance to try an American apple pie, they are delicious
as well as apples that are dipped in caramel.
There's a picture of that on that page as well.
Hmm, that looks delicious.
Kaylah, you know I love sweet food.
And looking at all of this makes me very hungry, but I probably shouldn't eat
it.
That's right. You should just stick to normal apples.
I think so.
Well, these foods are available for your sampling.
And sampling means that you are able to try a little bit.
Now we said you can see an apple dipped in caramel on that... on page 32.
And friends, the way that works is you take an apple and you put a stick in the
top of it.
And then you dip it in the caramel and it sticks to it because "caramel" is a
sticky, brown,
sweet texture... liquid that comes from really burning sugar and adding milk to
that.
And it creates this really, really sweet...
And it's really sticky and it's delicious on apples.
Yeah. Caramel is made by combining sugar with a lot of butter and getting it
real hot until it is something that is very delicious but very bad for you.
Yes. It's not the best way to eat an apple.
If you want the health benefits of the apple, you should probably stay away from
caramel apples.
But it is delicious.
And friends, also delicious is cider.
Cider is a drink that is made from pressed apples, and apple butter.
OK, so pressed apples.
A cider is delicious.
Cider is usually served warm.
You can also have it cold but with... it's warm, all the spices get to swirl
around in it.
That's made from pressing apples.
Now that's the way you get juice out of an apple.
Yeah, exactly.
Now the word to "press" something means to push very hard on it.
But when we talk about pressed fruit, that means you squeeze the fruit until all
of the juice comes out.
That's right.
Now usually if we are juicing maybe an orange, you squeeze it all out and it
kind of rinse out.
But you'd... you have to press an apple extremely hard because they're very
strong fruit, but the juice is absolutely worth it.
Apple cider is amazing.
You have to try it because it has this apple butter in there too that just...
Yes. Well, apple butter is a very thick spread.
And a spread is like a thick paste that it's not quite liquid but it's not quite
solid either, and it's used in food.
And that spread is made of cooked apples.
Now friends, if you've ever tried apple sauce, apple butter is kind of the same
texture.
It is not at all like actual butter.
So don't be surprised by it.
And it's full of spices.
It's... it's one of my favorite... it's one my favorite treats.
I remember going to an apple festival with my grandfather when I was a child and
loved the apple butter there.
Yes. I love apple butter.
In fact, I use it in many of my recipes of my cooking and when I'm cooking in
the States.
And it's something that is very healthy as well.
It's made from those apples, and it's not as bad as, well, real butter.
Now these are all essential to many of these festivals, those caramel apples,
apple pies, cider, and of course, apple butter.
OK. Now something that is "essential" is necessary.
It's needed.
It has to be there.
Well, of course, these are apple festivals, so you need to have apple cider and
caramel-dipped apples, apple pies, all of these things.
They are so important, in fact, that some festivals are even named after one of
them.
So you might recognize that there was an Applebutter Fest in Ohio.
Apple butter, you now know what that is.
OK. Well, people of all ages will enjoy the food and the fun at many of these
lively events that celebrate the apple.
And they truly are lively.
They're family friendly.
They're fun.
There's lots to see, lots to taste, lots to try.
I think apple festivals are really a good example of local culture no matter
where you go.
Yeah. And something that is lively has a lot of energy and a lot of happiness.
And so, yeah, these sound like a great place for people to enjoy each other's
company as they all enjoy apples.
That's right.
Friends, have you ever been to an apple festival?
Write to us at letters@StudioClassroom.com and tell us your favorite part or
maybe what you would like to try at an apple festival.
And find us on Facebook and share with us your pictures of enjoying apples.
That's right, friends.
Let us know if you like to eat apples in things like desserts.
Or maybe you like to enjoy them with other foods, maybe meats or pastas or
something else.
Or if you like to keep them raw, like the one I have in my hand.
Friends, it's been a lot of fun.
But now let's go watch today's skit.
It's time to celebrate.
Welcome to the apple festival.
An apple festival?
I can't believe you're celebrating a fruit.
Well, many countries have apple festivals.
The U.S., Canada, Germany and Australia too.
Well, what do people do at apple festivals besides eat apples?
Well, there are lots of activities and lots of booths too.
Oh! Can people buy souvenirs and crafts?
Sure. And that's not all.
You can enjoy live music and watch an antique car show.
Oh, music and cars!
We even have a parade.
A parade! I love parades.
And children can play games and ride in trucks full of hay.
Oh, I wish I were a kid again.
That sounds like fun.
It is. But remember, the heart of these festivals is the food - especially
apples.
Well, I do like apples.
Well, then you'll enjoy the apple pies, apple pancakes and apples dipped
caramel.
Yes, yes. I love all those things.
And try the apple cider and apple butter.
Those are essential to apple festivals.
Oh, now I understand why people celebrate apples.
Yeah, because everyone enjoys the food and the fun.
Yeah! Well, let's celebrate apples!
(Music).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And it's essential that you remember all our tips today.
I'll see you next time.
Bye-bye.
Thank you, Michelle.
The proverb "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" is really true.
Apples are very healthy because they possess, among other things, large amounts
of fiber and antioxidants.
Many communities hold autumn festivals... autumn apple festivals that is, that
can include music, games and historical demonstrations.
But at the heart of all the festivities is the apple and all the many delicious
goodies made from them.
Friends, go out today, enjoy an apple, and then join us tomorrow for another
lesson right here at Studio Classroom.
Take care.
