Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for taking time to study English with us.
My name is Steve.
Some people think that everything we need for good health is found in nature.
Whether we're suffering from a common cold or a disease like cancer,
they believe nature has a remedy that there's some root, a berry, a herb or a
leaf that can cure what ails you.
Well, what do you think?
Are you convinced or are you skeptical, or are you somewhere in between?
Well, our HEALTH feature this month focuses on fighting germs the natural way.
Let's learn more as we open our magazines and begin reading on page 38.
(Music).
Fight Germs the Natural Way.
Some medicines don't come from a doctor.
No one wants to be sick.
We try to avoid it by washing our hands, eating a healthy diet and taking
supplements, but we're not always successful.
When we do get sick, we usually reach for over-the-counter medicines.
If those don't work, we head to the doctor in hopes of getting some antibiotics.
These important drugs kill bacteria, but unfortunately they also reduce our
natural ability to fight disease.
Over time, overuse of antibiotics not only affects our health, it also leads to
bacteria that are resistant to the drugs, making them all the harder to kill.
(Music).
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us right here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
And my name is Ryan.
Now friends, we love to give you tips on how you can stay healthy.
This time we are telling you ways on how you can fight germs the natural way.
That's right.
We want to always be fighting germs.
Germs are those gross little bugs and bacteria and viruses that get into your
body and make you sick.
So we're going to fight him a natural way, meaning not using medicine, chemicals
or man-made substances.
That's right, because some medicines, friends, don't come from a doctor.
That's right.
We're going to give you some tips on how to be healthy without having to take a
trip to the doctor because, friends, it is not fun to visit the doctor.
No, it's not.
But you know what, Kaylah, it's even less fun, I think, to be sick.
But that doesn't mean you have to go to the doctor.
That's right.
So no one wants to be sick.
Who wants to be sick?
That's ridiculous.
We like being healthy.
Of course. And we try to avoid being sick or staying away from being sick by
washing our hands and eating a healthy diet and taking a lot of vitamins.
That's right, taking supplements.
Now we said "to avoid," that means we are not going near it.
We are trying to stay away from it.
So wash your hands, friends.
Eat healthy food; that means your diet should be strong and healthy.
And take supplements; and as Ryan said, those are vitamin.
That's right.
They are things that help your body grow even more than just eating normal
foods.
But friends, when we do all of these things, sometimes we're not always
successful in trying not to get sick.
But when we do get sick, we usually reach for over-the-counter medicines.
"Over-the-counter" means that a doctor did not have to tell you to get it.
It's something you get to help you feel better.
Now friends, when I think of over-the-counter medicines, I often think of Ryan
right here in the studio with me.
When Ryan gets sick, he doesn't... he does have a very bad mood.
So often we like to give him over-the-counter medicines to help him feel better
so he'll stop being so cranky and crabby.
Oh, come on! I'm not that bad.
OK, you can be.
I try.
Friends, if you had been sick, you know it is not very enjoyable, so you'll try
to get these over-the-counter medicines.
But sometimes those don't work.
That's right.
Now friends, even if you're not feeling well, remember to be nice to your
friends.
Now if you are not getting better, you might need to go to get a different kind
of medicine.
You need to head over to the doctor and get an antibiotic.
That's right.
Now "antibiotics" are medicines that are used to kill bacteria in your body.
That's right.
Now over-the-counter just treats the symptom, helps your fever, helps your
cough.
But an antibiotic will actually attack and kill the bacteria.
Yes, they are much stronger than over-the-counter medicines.
Now these important drugs kill the bacteria, but unfortunately they also reduce
your natural ability to fight disease.
That's right.
Now this is all very technical, friends.
We can try and describe why that happens to you.
But just remember, if you do take antibiotics, you need to take all of them, not
just stop when you feel better.
That's right.
But not only that, it helps... it's fighting for you so your body's not
fighting.
And over time, overuse of antibiotics not only affects your health, but it also
leads to bacteria that are resistant to the drugs.
So don't overuse them.
OK.
Now this resistance that we're talking about is probably one of the most
dangerous health concerns I can think of right now because people like to
overuse these antibiotics.
If you're "overusing" something, that means you're using it more than you need
to.
That's right. You use it too often or too much.
Friends, if you just have a cold, it is OK to try to fight it naturally with
your body taking supplements,
taking some of these natural herbs to help you for the first couple of days
before you visit a doctor.
Yes, even if your crabby, that's OK.
But friends, if you do you take antibiotics, don't overuse them because then the
bacteria will resist,
or fight against the drugs, and they'll be even harder to kill next time.
That's right.
And we want to be able to continue so they kill these germs.
We want to protect ourselves and each other.
And we are going to tell you what you can do to do with a natural treating of
them instead of using antibiotics after we visit the Chat Room.
Yes. I think we should let them hold the event here.
We have the space, and it is a good location.
And if we're trying to get more people into the library, well, that would be a
good thing too.
OK. Bye-bye now.
Hey, Bryan, is the library putting together a new event?
No. But a school in town wants to invite an author to give a talk for both
students and the public about how he writes his books.
They thought more people would come if it was at the library than if it were in
the school.
That sounds like an interesting activity.
It's nice of you to help them.
Well, I think the event will be helpful for lots of people.
And if people come to the library and start using it because of this event, hey,
that's all the better.
I agree.
Hey, by the way, does the phrase "all the better" mean the same as "even
better"?
Yes. I was saying that holding the event at the library is good; and if the
library benefits from it, it will be even better.
You can make similar constructions with other adjectives or adverbs.
For example, if you hurt your leg, running a race becomes all the harder.
Could I say moving to America helped me learn English all the faster?
Sure. Or someone might say: Since I visited France, my French class became all
the more interesting.
So "all the better" is different from "all the best," right?
That's right.
"All the best" is used to say you hope good things happen to someone.
This use appears in sentences like: I wish you all the best.
Yes. I often see that at the end of a letter.
That's right. Or just "all the best" will do.
I see.
Well, I wish you all the best as you get ready for the event.
Hopefully it will make the library all the more popular.
Thanks, Ken, and good use of the idioms.
