OK. Welcome back from the break, friends.
Today if we get an infection, our first response often is: I'll just go to the
doctor and get some antibiotics.
Very simple, very easy, right?
But modern antibiotics are hardly 100 years old, which leads us to ask:
What did people with an infection do before antibiotics were invented?
Well, they use stuff found in nature, like garlic.
Let's read about it as we continue the lesson on line 15.
(Music).
Fight Germs the Natural Way.
The solution?
Cut back on prescription antibiotics, and try some that nature has to offer.
Garlic.
Used as a medicine for thousands of years, garlic kills a wide range of
disease-causing microorganisms.
It also helps prevent heart disease and may even help to reduce fevers.
This amazing plant may even help boost your immunity.
Garlic is used a lot in cooking, but heat destroys its medicinal effects.
The best way to consume garlic is to eat it slightly cooked, raw or to take it
as a supplement.
All right, friends.
We know we're talking about ways that you can stay healthy the natural way.
But we started off before the break talking about a problem.
Our problem being you get sick, you visit the doctor, use antibiotics, and then
those... those germs build up a resistance to it.
So what can you do?
What is the solution to this problem?
What can you do to cut back on prescription antibiotics?
OK. Well, you can try some methods to treat your sicknesses that nature has to
offer.
That's right.
You want to cut back on these and try something that nature has to offer.
Well, that is our Grammar on the Go sentence.
So let's visit Liz.
Hi there, friends.
How are you doing today?
My name is Liz.
And it's time for Grammar on the Go.
I'm at a farmers' market today.
And I'm surrounded by all these wonderful fruits and vegies.
Our HEALTH article this month is on fighting germs the natural way.
And according to the writer:
Cut back on prescription antibiotics, and try some that nature has to offer.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Notice how the sentence begins with the phrase: cut back on.
It's an idiom that means to reduce or to decrease.
So today's sentence just means that we can reduce the prescription antibiotics
that we take, and try what nature has to offer.
Use this phrase when you want to talk about how the amount of something should
be made less.
For example, if someone wants to lose weight, you can say:
Exercise more and cut back on junk food.
Or, if someone wants to spend more time with his family and not so much time at
work, then he can say:
I plan on cutting back my work hours so I can be with my family more.
So friends, give this phrase a try.
What is something you can cut back on?
Now if you have a copy of this month's Studio Classroom with you, be sure to
check out today's Grammar Tip section for more example sentences.
That's it for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off.
Bye-bye.
Thank you very much, Liz.
Well friends, we know we're looking at some ways to treat your sicknesses that
nature has to offer.
Let's start off with our first one now.
Our first one is garlic.
And you can see a picture of garlic cloves, which are the pieces of garlic, on
page 38 in your Studio Classroom magazine right there at the top of page.
Friends, garlic is delicious, I think.
And it is used as a medicine for thousands of years.
That's right. It has been being used.
People all over the world have used garlic.
It's a very common spice that we eat in a lot of our foods.
And why would it work as a medicine?
Well, it kills a wide range of disease-causing microorganisms.
That's right.
Not only is it delicious, friends, it serves a wonderful purpose of killing
microorganisms.
OK. Now "microorganisms" are really tiny living things similar to bacteria; and
these ones are disease-causing.
That's right.
Now I've actually heard that places that have a lot of garlic in their food, you
can stay healthier longer,
and it keeps your food good to eat for a longer period of time as well.
Oh, so it's helpful not only for your body but also for your food.
That's right.
Well, let's see what it does.
It can also help your body by preventing heart disease and may even help reduce
fevers.
Now heart disease, we know what a heart is; heart disease is the number one
cause of death in the world every year.
So heart disease is a very serious condition.
Your heart is a very, very important part of your body, and garlic can help keep
a strong heart.
Now even if you just have a fever, this is good for you too.
A fever is when your body temperature is too high when you are sick.
That's right.
When you're sick and you're sweating, and your skin feels hot but you feel old,
that's a fever.
OK. This amazing plant may even help boost your immunity.
Fantastic.
That's the best way to stay healthy is to have a boosted immunity.
Now "boost" means very strong and uplifted; to have your immunity boosted is
something you definitely want.
All right, so you're lifting your immunity, you are fighting against disease.
Your body's "immunity" is its ability to identify and fight diseases or
sicknesses that you might have.
So you want to help that grow, help it boost up.
That's right.
Now some diseases and some sicknesses as well as some medicines make your
immunity go down because it is weakening your body by the way it's treating you.
Sometimes antibiotics do that.
You can get other sicknesses because your immunity is low.
So eat garlic! It helps boost it.
Puts it up there higher, keeps your body healthier longer.
OK. Now I love using garlic in my cooking.
I think it's delicious and very beneficial for the flavor of my food.
But when you cook it, heat destroys its medicinal effects.
So friends, just saying you had garlic noodles doesn't actually mean you took
garlic medicine.
The best way to consume garlic is to eat it just slightly cooked, raw or to take
it as a supplement if you want the medicinal value.
Right. And "medicinal" here means it is a medicine, it is helping your body.
So you can eat it raw, that means you don't cook it, you can also take it as a
supplement.
How can you take garlic as a supplement?
If you take it as a supplement, that probably means it comes in a pill that you
can just swallow because eating garlic raw sounds like it might kind of burn
your mouth.
It's a very, very strong flavor, so you might not want to do that.
And if you don't want to, a supplement would be a good option.
Yes. I've eaten raw garlic, a big piece of raw garlic before, and it makes you
go (Background Noise).
It's not a delicious by itself.
So you have just a little bit, and it'll still help your body.
That's right.
But friends, taking the time to actually be taking care of your body and
boosting your immunity will help you stay healthy longer.
We have more tips and more natural ways to stay healthy.
But right now, we need to watch today's skit.
Oh... I don't want to be sick.
Me either.
No one wants to be sick.
Let's try to avoid sickness.
Yeah! Let's wash our hands.
Yes, and let's eat a healthy diet.
Oh, let's take supplements.
Hachoo! Oh, no.
I have a cold.
Oh... Oh, no.
My stomach hurts.
We tried to stay well, but we weren't successful.
So now what?
Uh... Quick! Reach for over-the-counter medicine.
Yeah.
But what if those don't work?
Hmm... Head to the doctor in hopes of getting antibiotics.
Yes, kill bacteria with drugs.
That's the best medicine... right?
Unfortunately, antibiotics reduce our natural ability to fight disease.
Oh, no.
And overuse makes bacteria more resistant and harder to kill.
So what is the best solution?
I know.
Let's see what nature has to offer.
Nature?
Yeah.
Like garlic.
Yeah. Garlic kills bacteria and viruses.
And it boosts our immunity.
Garlic kills bad organisms and leaves the good ones.
It cleans the blood.
It helps reduce fevers.
Garlic can keep us healthy.
I'm going to cook some up right away.
No... wait.
Heat destroys the medicinal effects of garlic.
Then let's eat raw garlic.
Or... we can use them as supplements.
Yeah, garlic supplements.
(Background Noise).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And that's all the time we have for today.
Take care and I'll see you soon.
Here's a good rule of thumb for antibiotics: Try not to use them.
The second rule of thumb is: If you do use them, try not to use too many of
them.
As an alternative, consider using things found in nature, like garlic.
Tomorrow we'll look at four more infection-fighting medicines that don't come
from a doctor - they come from nature.
Hey, everyone, high-level articles like this one give you the chance to write
