Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
My name is Steve.
In the history of medical science, antibiotics has to rank up there at the top
of all-time amazing advancements.
Who can count how many lives these wonder drugs have helped and saved over the
years?
Today, because antibiotics work so fast and so effectively, we have, in effect,
become addicted to them.
Moreover, our excessive misuse of antibiotics has lulled us into forgetting that
nature possesses its own ways of fighting bacteria.
Today we'll continue talking and looking at germ fighters found in nature.
We'll kick off today's reading with oregano oil on page 38.
(Music).
Fight Germs the Natural Way.
Oregano oil.
Oil of oregano can be rubbed on the skin to treat itches and skin infections.
The herb also fights sinus congestion and can ease an upset stomach.
Oil of oregano, however, does not come from the common cooking spice.
The oil comes from a different species of oregano.
Honey.
Records show that ancient Egyptians used honey for its antibacterial properties
around 4,000 years ago.
A 2009 study done in Australia showed honey to be a very effective antibiotic.
It killed every bacterium it was tested against, including one that was
resistant to 13 different antibiotic drugs.
(Music).
Hi, friends.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And today we are looking again at natural ways to stay healthy.
And Ryan, I hope you are taking good notes so you stay healthy longer.
So I don't get crabby when I get sick.
I do get upset and a little annoying and whining when I get sick.
So it's best to try and stay as healthy as possible.
We've seen one way to do that so far.
That's right. We said to eat garlic raw, slightly cooked or in a supplement
format to help boost your immunity,
prevent heart disease and to kill a lot of different microorganisms that can
cause sickness.
OK, so garlic is delicious and healthy.
And now we're going to see something else that is also delicious and good for
your health.
And what else makes this special is this is a natural way.
We are talking about natural ways to stay healthy trying to avoid antibiotics
because they can drop your immunity, make it easier to get sick.
So what is our next natural way of staying healthy?
OK. Well, there's garlic now, there is oregano oil.
Or oil of oregano.
It can be rubbed on the skin to treat itches and skin infections.
So friends, if you are... have some sort of skin rash that itches all the time
and you're always having to scratch it, you can put oil of oregano on it to help
treat it.
OK. So you can use this oil, which comes from a plant called oregano, and you
can rub it on your skin to make it stop itching.
Well, the herb also fights sinus congestion and can ease an upset stomach.
Now sinus... we need to know what a sinus is before we know what the congestion
would be.
"Sinus" refers to all those spaces in your skull, in your head, all those places
near your... your ears, your nose, your mouth, those...
You breathe through your sinuses.
Yeah. Well, friends, did you know there is a lot of open space in your head?
Believe it or not, behind your eyes, in your nose, all through your years,
there's a lot of space for air, but that can often get congested.
Now "congested" means there's stuff in it that you don't want.
It's when a part of the body is filled with a liquid or blood that should not be
there.
Often your sinuses were filled with a liquid, we call it snot or mucus.
It's when... when you have a cold, and your ears pop and your nose is all runny,
and you can't breathe through your nose,
and you get those headaches behind your eyes, that is sinus congestion.
OK. So this herb, or another word for a type of plant, it can get rid of sinus
congestions and can also ease an upset stomach, which is when you feel sick.
That's right.
When your stomach does not feel good, maybe you ate something bad or you ate too
much, or your... you have some sort of sickness,
and your stomach just feels like you're going to throw up, get rid of that food.
This can help ease that stomach pain.
OK. Now friends, you might hear the word "oregano" and think: Oh, yeah! I've
heard of oregano in cooking.
I made that mistake earlier, friends.
This word is actually talking about the type of plant, and there are more than
one kind.
That's right.
Oil of oregano does not come from the common cooking spice.
Even though that spice is delicious and great for cooking, it doesn't have the
same effects.
This oil actually comes from a different species of oregano.
OK. So friends, there is one species, or kind, of oregano that is used in
cooking spices, which is used to make your food taste better.
And then there's a different species, or kind, that is used in this type of oil.
So they are related and they're both oregano, but they serve different purposes
both of which are good.
OK. So Ryan, that's our second natural substance.
What is our third?
All right.
Now you can use honey in order to improve your health as well.
I love honey!
I love honey in my tea.
I love honey on toast.
It's my favorite way to sweeten things.
OK. Well, we see here that records show that ancient Egyptians used honey for
its antibacterial properties around 4,000 years ago.
So not only is it delicious, it's good for you.
It has very good antibacterial properties.
Now "properties" meaning it can do something.
It is made up of something and serves a purpose.
Now what does it mean to be antibacterial, though?
OK. Well, we've learned about "antibiotics." And that word means something that
kills bacteria.
Well, if something is "antibacterial," that means it is able to kill bacteria.
Great! Anti... anti- or anti- at the beginning of a word means against, not or
negative.
So this goes against bacteria.
So it kills it for you.
So they have been using this for 4,000 years in Egypt.
That's right. This is something that is very good, natural medicine.
And we see that a 2009 study done in Australia showed honey can be very
effective in antibiotic treatments.
It killed every bacterium it was tested against, including one that was
resistant to 13 different antibiotic drugs.
So honey is even better than a lot of man-made drugs.
So friends, make sure you're using honey.
Put a little bit in your tea.
Get honey into your body.
It can also help your skin.
So use... use honey in your cooking.
OK, friends, join us after we watch the skit for some more tips.
Nobody wants to be sick.
Right, nobody.
And that's why I'm eating more garlic.
And that's why I'm using grapefruit seed extract.
Grapefruit seed extract?
What does it do?
It has disease-fighting and health-promoting benefits.
Oh. Does it help fight cold and flu?
Yes, as well as ear and sinus infections.
Can it cure stomach disorders?
Yes, and it may even help fight colon cancer.
Grapefruit seed extract, I'm going to try it.
You should.
And you should also try honey.
Honey? Well, that's a new idea.
Actually, it's an old idea.
The ancient Egyptians used it 4,000 years ago.
Well, what does honey do?
Well, it's a very effective antibiotic.
Then I'll try honey too.
And don't forget to try green tea.
Oh. It kills certain kinds of oral bacteria, right?
Yes. And it also has the ability to break down excess fat.
OK, I'll add green tea to my daily diet.
I'm going to stay healthy the natural way.
Wait! Don't forget the umeboshi.
People swear by it.
Umeboshi.
Eh... yeah.
That sounds strange.
It's a sour, pickled Japanese plum.
But what does it do?
It's a flu remedy.
It kills viruses, and it can cure food poisoning and other ailments.
Excellent.
I'll try it.
I'm on my way to good health... the natural way.
Oh... grape seeds?
