Hello, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today.
My name is Steve.
Now what's your idea of the ultimate adventure?
A trip to the bottom of the deepest ocean?
Maybe a climb to the top of the highest mountain, a jungle safari, or exploring
the South Pole?
Well, as exciting as all these are, there's one adventure that tops them all
because it's out of this world!
I mean, literally, it's out of this world.
That's right.
Our ADVENTURE this month has us leaving the Earth.
Let's open our Studio Classroom magazines now to page 44 and talk about Space
Tourism.
Space Tourism.
Your next dream vacation could be out of this world.
Are you in the mood for a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience?
Maybe you're tired of those week-long vacations lounging at some tropical
paradise, and you need some real adventure.
Maybe you're a long-time fan of Star Trek and Star Wars and generally have stars
in your eyes about everything space-related.
Perhaps you just have an extra US$200,000 lying around the house.
If so, then space tourism is for you!
Believe it or not, space travel is no longer just for astronauts.
Hi, friends.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And today we are looking at ADVENTURE.
Are you looking for an adventure?
Well, maybe your next vacation could be out of this world.
Out of this world!
Now friends, we're not talking about something that is just crazy; this is
out-of-this-world crazy - in space.
That's because we're talking about space tourism.
Now friends, you know I love to travel.
You know I love a good adventure.
Well, maybe my next adventure should be to space... for my first tourism: space
adventure.
Now tourism means you are going on a trip to tour.
That means to travel around and look at something.
Well, you might see a lot of interesting things on Earth, but maybe that's not
enough for you.
Maybe you want to go all the way up to space.
Now are you in the mood for a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience?
I know I am, and that's why I ended up traveling all over the world.
OK. This term "once-in-a-lifetime," you see, friends, that's a lot of words
connected with hyphens.
This refers to something that happens only once in your whole life.
Maybe you won't have this chance again.
I would say going to space, Ryan, as a tourist would be a once-in-a-lifetime
experience.
Well, you might be surprised, Kaylah, because it's becoming more and more common
for normal people like us to be able to travel to space.
Friends, maybe you're tired of those long... week-long vacations lounging at
some tropical... paradise just sitting there, and you need some real adventure.
Now friends, I m not tired of going to a tropical paradise to just lounge on the
beach.
That sounds great.
Well, "lounging" means you're just sitting around or lying down relaxing.
Usually most people go to a beach destination to do that.
They sit on a chair, drink their drink and listen to the ocean.
Now that does sound great.
I love a lounging beach vacation.
But I'm... also be in the mood for some real adventure.
How about you, Ryan?
Oh, I love adventure.
I love to get out!
And Kaylah, you have seen me jump off of waterfalls, you've seen us travel down
scooters on the coast.
We love adventure.
But, well, maybe our adventures could be taken somewhere else.
OK, maybe you're not into big vacations.
But maybe you are a long-time fan of Star Trek and Star Wars,
and you're just generally... you generally have stars in your eyes about
everything space-related.
OK, friends, if you know Star Trek or Star Wars, of course, they both have the
word "star" in front of them, they take place in space.
And people usually like to enjoy traveling through space in those and seeing the
technology.
Maybe you enjoy those shows, and you have stars in your eyes as well.
OK. This is a phrase we need to take a second look at: to have stars in your
eyes.
Now this is another play on words.
Here he means it quite literally that you like to look at the stars.
You're interested in space.
You like things outside of this world.
But this phrase in English can also mean something else.
That's right.
Usually if you "have stars in your eyes," that means you're extremely excited
about something so much that your eyes get really big.
Or maybe it can also mean you dream a lot.
You have big dreams, not just small ones.
Maybe your dreams aren't about going to the... ice cream shop.
But maybe your dreams are about going to another country to study or visiting a
place you've never been.
Those are dreams that have stars in your eyes.
They're big and grand, just like stars are.
Exactly.
Friends, maybe you've seen these science fiction movies, and you've always
dreamed of going to space.
Well, you might also need to have an extra US$200,000 lying around the house in
order to do that.
Oh... Well, I guess that takes me off this list.
I definitely want adventure.
I like going out and seeing things.
I think space is awesome and fascinating, but I don't have this much money.
OK. Well, friends, if you wanted to go right now, that might be about how much
it costs.
Maybe it will be less in the future.
But if this is you, you have your chance.
Space tourism is for you!
Now believe it or not, space travel is no longer just for astronauts.
That's right.
Usually we think that only astronauts are able to go to space.
An "astronaut" is typically a scientist that is allowed onto a space shuttle or
a rocket, and they go up to space to perform experiments.
That's right.
They are trained, and they're physically trained.
They're educationally trained.
And they get to go to space.
Now Ryan, I love the stars.
I love looking at the stars.
I'd love to go visit the stars!
But I really don't have this much money.
Yeah. And I don't think I'm smart enough to be an astronaut, so.
Maybe you are not an astronaut, but that's OK because space travel isn't just
for them anymore.
Friends, join us after we visit the Chat Room for some more information.
Hey, Bryan.
Hi, Ken.
I found this book laying around my apartment, and I thought you might be
interested in it.
A music history book?
Of course, I am.
Thanks, Ken.
But you should say the book was "lying" around your apartment.
I thought that's what I said.
No. You said "laying," which is wrong because, well, Ken, why don't we go to
Doris for an explanation.
OK.
The verb "lay" is an action.
It describes the action of putting something somewhere.
The verb "lie," spelled L-I-E, describes being in a flat horizontal position of
rest.
So after you "lay" a book down, you can say it is "lying" on the table.
OK. That is much clearer.
But I'm still a little confused by the phrase you used, lying around.
OK. Think of a messy room.
There are probably several items lying around, some lying on the floor, others
lying on a table.
In other words, things that are left out and not put away are lying around.
Well said, Ken.
And I'm sure your room isn't really like that, right?
Actually, my office at home is kind of like that.
There are a lot of books lying around.
And that makes them easier to find, right?
Actually, I lose a lot of books that way.
Say, I think I've heard people used the phrase "lying around" to refer to
staying at home and doing nothing.
Is that right?
It sure is.
If you visit me on Saturdays, you might find me lying around, which means I'd be
lying down on the sofa and watching TV.
I got it.
So things can be left lying around the house and people can be lazy and lie
around the house.
Yes. And that sounds like it just might be my plan for this Saturday.
Hey, that's not a bad idea.
