Thanks for joining us here at Studio Classroom Worldwide.
My name is Steve.
In the world of Chinese movies and pop music, Sammi Cheng's star was among the
brightest.
Cheng was a superstar who had it all: the sparkling fashion, the awards, the
fans, the fame and the talent to back it all up.
Now despite all this, Sammi Cheng saw dark clouds on the horizon that no amount
of success could blow away.
Now if her story ended there, that would be pretty sad, right?
Well fortunately, Sammi Cheng's story has a good ending.
So let's pick up the lesson at the top of page 15 under the heading - Out of the
darkness.
Sammi Cheng.
Out of the darkness.
During Cheng's break from performing, her heart was changed.
She realized career success could not give her a complete, satisfying life.
But she did find something that could - God.
Cheng came out of her period of darkness as a committed Christian.
Faith that God is in control replaced her fears with peace and confidence.
Following God became her purpose.
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
My name is Ryan.
Friends, we've been talking over the last couple days about Sammi Cheng, a star
out of Hong Kong.
Now yesterday we left off at kind of a sad place in her story.
We were talking about the darkness that she was getting into.
She said her heart felt empty.
She didn't know if she would ever find real happiness.
Even though she had an amazing career, there was something still missing.
Yeah. She was an actor, she's a singer, she set trends in fashion.
People loved her.
But she still felt sad and didn't know how she would get out of the darkness.
That's right.
And well, at the very beginning of our article, we said we're talking about her
journey out of the darkness.
So first we showed you where she comes from, her amazing career.
We look quickly at how she became very depressed and very sad.
Now we're finding how did Cheng get out of this.
Did she find the happiness that she was looking for?
OK. Now friends, yesterday we ended by saying that Sammi Cheng decided to take a
break from performing.
And what happened during that break?
Well, when she took a break, her heart was changed.
She said she felt empty inside.
So I'm going to guess she probably found something to fill that emptiness.
Now let's find out what she realized.
OK. Well obviously, her heart was changed.
That means she changed her attitude.
And when that happened, she realized that career success could not give her a
complete satisfying life.
To realize something means you understand it for the first time.
So she understands now that her... the... her successful career was just not
enough to satisfy.
Yeah. And she realized that any successful career is not always enough to give
you a satisfying life.
And that means something that is as enjoyable as you want it to be.
That's right.
But she did find something that could fill her life, something that could
satisfy her heart.
And that was God.
OK. So she took a break from singing, from acting and from being a star, and she
found God.
God is what actually gave her a satisfying life.
That's right.
She said she felt empty before, and that even though she was famous, that
couldn't... that wasn't enough for her.
She needed something more.
And she found God.
Now Cheng came out of her period of depression, this place where she was...
stuck in darkness.
Now as she came out, she is a committed Christian now.
OK. Now if you're "committed," that means you are loyal.
You are willing to give all of your time and all of your energy to something.
OK. So she is committed, she is giving her time and her energy to being a
Christian.
She is not just saying...
Some people like to say "Oh, I'm a Christian" very quickly and move on past it.
Instead, she has made this a part of her life.
That's what it means to be committed to your faith or to your religion.
OK. So friends, she came out of a period, or time, of darkness and into an area
of light, a time of light when she became a Christian,
when she decided to commit and promise that she would give her life to God.
Now faith that God is in control replaced her fears with peace and confidence.
So she knows that God is in control of her life that she is not in control.
And those fears that she had are gone, and have been replaced with peace.
Yeah. Now friends, peace means that you are very calm.
You are not worrying about what is happening in your life.
I actually believe, Kaylah, that it's very important to try and be peaceful in
your life, not worry and try to be in control of everything.
That's right.
And that doesn't mean you have to just sit and do nothing to be peaceful.
You can still continue having a career and having a life,
but knowing that you're not alone and being relaxed and that you don't have to
do everything because God is in control.
And she walks with that confidence now.
Yeah. If you have "confidence" in something, that means that you trust them.
You are willing to be certain that they will do something or that it exists the
way you think it does.
Now this peace and confidence, we see, replaced her fears.
So she no longer has fear.
When you replace something, that means you take something that used to be there,
you take that away and put something new in there instead.
So maybe you need to replace a light bulb.
If the light is not working, you take the old one out and put the new one in.
And that's what her life was like, just like a light; she took the dark one out
and got the light to get light again.
I like that example, Kaylah.
That's a great example.
Now friends, maybe you are worrying, maybe you are afraid about scores on tests
or a job situation.
These are all things that can take away peace in your life.
But I encourage you to have confidence in God.
Trust that God is in control.
And when you do that, you will be more peaceful.
You will not be unhappy.
That's right.
You can follow Sammi's example because as she follows God, it became her
purpose.
So she no longer works for just her career, just for being an actress.
Following God, being a part... having Him be a part of her life has become her
purpose.
Yes. A purpose is what she is meant to do.
And this is a fantastic purpose.
Friends, we'll see how she uses that purpose in a little bit.
But right now, let's watch the skit.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
It's Sammi Cheng, the Queen of Pop.
Oh, you must be one of my many fans.
Yes, Sammi. I love you.
You are one of Hong Kong's most popular singers.
That's true.
I've created lots of albums and I've won lots of awards.
You sure have - 23 awards in one year alone.
Yes. That was the same year I began my solo concerts.
I remember.
I saw the Sammi Star Show all 16 times.
Wow! You really do love my singing.
I loved your singing and your acting.
My acting career has been very successful too.
I know.
You've appeared in 22 movies, and I've seen them all twice.
Wow! You really do love my acting.
Yeah. You won the Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
And the Critics Society gave me another award.
I love your singing and your acting and your trendy fashions.
You admire each new look, right?
Yeah. I always wonder what you'll wear next.
Me too.
Oh, Sammi Cheng, you're so attractive.
And you have fame and success.
But despite those things, I've had struggles.
Struggles? You? Why?
My heart was empty before.
I lived in fear and darkness.
Oh, no.
So what did you do?
I began following God.
Now I have a purpose.
I wish I had a purpose.
