Welcome back.
I hope you had a great break.
Well, some of you know what it's like to live in a dark place, don't you?
Dark places are depressing, disturbing and sometimes frightening.
Dark places rob you of your hope and your peace.
That's where Sammi Cheng was living.
Fortunately for her, she eventually found her way into the light.
Let's learn more about that journey under the heading: Living in the light.
Sammi Cheng.
Living in the light.
In 2007, Cheng began performing again, creating songs that reflected her changed
life.
Her album "Faith" combines pop with gospel music.
In it, Cheng uses what she has learned to inspire others.
Even Cheng's attitude toward clothing has changed.
She used to use expensive brands to hide her lack of confidence.
While she still enjoys fashion, Cheng no longer needs it for emotional security.
She knows her identity and her purpose.
Cheng's talent and creativity have helped her accomplish great things.
And her new attitude will help her do even more.

We have followed Sammi Cheng's career, her journey from being just a performing
artist when she was 16,
up to a very successful career, and even into the darkness that took over her
life.
But that's not where she stopped.
In that time of not performing when her heart was very lonely, she found God and
found her new purpose is to serve God in everything she does.
So she's walked away from that darkness and is now living in the light.
OK. So she was in the darkness and now she's living in the light.
Kaylah, can you explain what it means to live in the light?
OK. Well, we saw that she stopped performing.
Now it does not mean that because she's performing, we turn the lights back on.
That's not what this means.
This means... "living in the light" refers to living in God's light.
She has a purpose in her faith in her Christianity.
So this light is God living, God shining through her.
And that's how she lives now.
OK. So because she is in the light now that she's found her purpose, she decided
to perform again.
And she started this in 2007 creating songs that reflected her changed life.
That's right.
So she started performing again.
She took a break, found God, got her life right, found her new purpose and then
started performing new songs, was creating things that reflect her change.
Now to "reflect" something means it shows it.
If you think about a mirror, a mirror reflects light.
It shows back what it's already have... what is being put into it, it comes out
of it.
So what's going into her life, now she's showing you through her music.
OK. So like you said, a mirror would reflect your beautiful face.
And here her songs reflect, or show, her new and changed life.
That's right.
So now she is performing with her purpose of serving God.
So she put out a new album, and that album is called Faith.
All right. Now this new album is called "Faith," like Kaylah said.
And the word "faith" means that you believe in something, believe that it is or
will do something.
Now what is this album about?
Well, this album is a special style of music.
It combines pop music with gospel music.
And friends, you have seen two music videos off of her album "Faith" from the
last couple of days here at Studio Classroom.
We watched two music videos.
And those were both from this gospel music album.
All right.
"Gospel" is a style or kind of music.
It's always, or almost always, a religious music.
That's right.
It is a form of religious music and has a very upbeat rhythm to it.
So she mixed it with her pop music background to create a new album, a new
style.
Yeah. It has a lot of beat.
It's a lot of fun to listen to.
Well, in it, Cheng uses what she has learned to inspire others.
So friends, it's good when you learned lessons to share that and to inspire
other people.
Yeah. I think this is a great thing to do.
To "inspire" someone means to give them a reason to do something, to cause them
to want to go and work or be something great or do something.
That's right. She's giving them hope.
She was in darkness and found her light in God.
And because of that, she wants to inspire or give hope of a peaceful life to
other people.
And that is what her album does.
I think that's a great idea; and it's fantastic to do that through music.
People love listening to music, and it can easily inspire them with its words.
But her music is not the only thing that has changed; even Cheng's attitude
toward clothing has changed.
OK. Now an "attitude" is your feeling or opinion of something, the way that you
feel about something.
Well, she used to use expensive brands to hide her lack of confidence,
which means she did not have the confidence or the courage that she needed so
she dressed yourself up to hide that.
Right. And while she still... enjoys fashion now, she no longer needs it for her
emotional security.
She doesn't need it to be safe.
That's right.
Her safety comes in knowing her purpose.
She knows her identity and her purpose.
She has a goal, and she doesn't need fashion to fill that anymore.
OK. So she has a lot of confidence now.
She knows her identity or who she is.
That's right. She knows who she is.
She knows what her purpose is because she found her faith.
Now Cheng's talent and creativity have helped her accomplish great things.
OK. If you "accomplish," that means you finish something and you are successful.
That's right.
Now it's her attitude that has changed.
So even though things have been different for her, she had these struggles,
and now she is Christian and has found her faith in God, she... her attitude has
changed.
And it... it will continue to help her do even more with her successful career.
Yeah. And friends, it just might inspire you as well.
Having her new attitude will help her to do more, and maybe you too can learn
from that.
That's right.
So her fashion and her music have changed, but she continues working with a new
purpose and a new goal.
And I hope, friends, she and her life can inspire you.

An ID. That's short for "identity," right?
No, not identity. It's short for "identification".
Identification?
How is that different from identity?
Well, why don't we go to Doris and have her explain the difference.
OK.
Well, both identity and identification come from the verb, to identify.
Those two words have different meanings.
Your identity refers to the characteristics that determine the person you are.
Bryan is a librarian; and that's his identity.
"Identification" is simply the noun form of the verb, to identify.
Oh, so ID is identification.
Right. And in that sense, it often refers to a document, a number, a password or
a signature used to identify a person.
So you asked that guy just now for a form of identification?
Right.
Your driver's license is one form of identification.
Your passport is another form of identification.
Someone in authority may ask you for a form of identification to make sure you
are the person you say you are.
I see.
So my library card is a form of an identification.
Well, Ken, only here in the library.
Usually when people ask for a form of ID, they want a photo ID.
I see.

And after a period of searching, she finally found what she was looking for - a
relationship with God.
