OK. Welcome back from the break.
I think one reason why we all love fatty foods, like chips, fried chicken,
butter and cheese, we love it so much because of fat.
Fat not only enhances the taste of food, but I think it also improves the food's
texture, giving us a happy, satisfied feeling as we eat.
Now let's learn how to make the transition from bad fats to good fats in this
next reading at the top of the right-hand column.
Fat Facts.
There are a few easy adjustments you can make to your diet to make sure you're
getting the good fats you need.
First, cook with olive oil or vegetable oil instead of butter.
Eat more fish, and choose lean white meats or meat with the fat trimmed off.
Improve your salad with some chopped nuts and oil-based dressing, and skip the
bacon bits and creamy dressing.
Limit your intake of whole-fat dairy and any refined or processed foods.
Believe it or not, you can lose weight while eating healthy fats.
They'll curb your appetite, helping you to lower your calorie count.
Make these few changes, and you'll be on your way to better health!
Today, friends, we are looking at Fat Facts, learning about good versus bad fats
for your diet to help you live a healthier lifestyle.
OK. So we know there are actually good fats.
There is fat that you should be eating to help your overall health.
And how can we tell if they are good, Kaylah?
Right before the break, we said a good rule of thumb is that if the fat is a
liquid at room temperature, you can consider that a good fat.
OK. So how can you actually adjust your diet to make sure you're eating these
fats?
Well, friends, there are a few easy adjustments you can make.
OK. An adjustment is a small change.
So hopefully, you can change your diet in small places so it doesn't seem
overwhelming or very stressful to have to change your whole diet.
Make these easy adjustments that you can make to your diet to be sure that
you're getting good fats in your food,
into your body so you could have these incredible health benefits.
OK. So friends, it's not too hard.
Just make some small easy adjustments, all right?
That's right.
Now first, our first adjustment that you can make is to start cooking with olive
oil or vegetable oil instead of butter.
OK, so that's a good point.
Friends, we know that butter is a solid at room temperature.
So it's not a good fat.
Or olive oil and vegetable oil are both liquids at room temperature, so you can
consider that a good fat.
So friends, when you're cooking, instead of throwing in a stick of butter, make
sure you use olive oil.
It's much healthier for you.
And still just as tasty, OK.
So that's actually an easy change.
Actually, Ryan, I think the olive oil adds more flavor.
It is one of those pieces of cooking that can really bring out flavor.
So friends, try using olive oil instead of butter to accent the flavors in your
vegetables.
OK. I like that.
Well, friends, what else can you do?
You can eat more fish, and choose lean white meats or meat with the fat trimmed
off.
Now if you don't like fish, I understand.
I personally really like fish.
But some people don't.
So if you can not add fish to your diet, choose white meats.
So eat the chicken breast instead of the chicken leg.
And choose a meat where the fat is trimmed off.
OK. If something is trimmed, that means you cut a little bit off.
And if fat is trimmed, you're cutting all of the fat off of the meat.
Now this makes sense to have a healthier diet to not take in these fats because,
once again, they are solid at room temperature.
Exactly. OK.
You can also improve your salad with some chopped nuts and oil-based dressing.
That's right.
Add nuts to your salad.
And nuts, there's a picture of all kinds of nuts on page 23 in your magazine.
So find some of these that you can enjoy.
Put those on, and use oil-based dressing instead of that milky, creamy base.
Exactly. We're using the word "based" here.
If something is something "based," that means that that is the central part to
it.
That is what makes up most of whatever it is.
So use oil-based dressing, and skip the bacon bits and creamy dressing.
That's right.
You don't need those extra fats.
Then limit your intake of whole-fat dairy and any refined or processed foods.
So whole-fat refers to having nothing taken out of it.
They're very, very creamy and kind of thick.
And you don't want that amount of fat in your dairy.
OK. So limit your intake.
"Intake" refers to bringing something in or taking something in, sometimes like
breath or food.
OK. So limit your dairy and refined foods.
And believe it or not, you can lose weight while eating healthy fats.
Yeah. They'll curb your appetite, helping you to lower your calorie count.
Now to "curb" something means control it or limit it.
And your appetite is how much you want to eat.
So you'll limit how much you eat because you don't need it.
All right, friends, make these few changes, and you'll be on your way to better
health.
That's right, on your way to a healthier you.
Friends, we hope you've enjoyed our tips and can use them in your daily life.
Now it's time to visit the Chat Room.
Ken, I've known you for a really long time.
I find it hard to believe that you had a hard time adjusting to American culture
when you first got here.
I sure did.
I used to say things that made people really mad just because I didn't know
better.
Really?
Can you give me an example?
Sure.
One time I was talking to a woman at a party.
And she was trying to point out her teenage daughter who was standing with a
group of friends, and I asked:
Oh, is she the fat one?
Oh, no, you did not say that.
I'm afraid I did.
She got really angry and stormed off.
You know weight is a very sensitive topic.
So in America, people avoid bringing it up in conversation.
That means you shouldn't say someone looks fat.
I know. And I should never ask how much someone weighs.
That's right, Ken.
I've also learned that you shouldn't give people advice on losing weight unless
they ask for it?
That's true.
And it applies to any advice you want to give about someone's appearance.
Hey, an American friend of mine who lives in Asia told me that people there tend
to give her advice on how to avoid getting pimples.
Yes. I've said things like that to Americans before.
And they usually get upset.
Yes. It's also best to avoid talking about someone's age and salary.
Wow! Americans really do have a lot of rules about what you can talk about.
Kind of.
But the important thing is to think about whether they might find what you're
about to say embarrassing.
If so, don't say it unless it's really important.
And by the way, Ken, I think your conversation skills have really improved.
Thanks, Bryan.

(Chinese).
And that concludes our Language Tips today.
Goodbye and take care.
Thank you so much, Michelle.
We appreciate that.
Friends, if you are thinking about losing weight or making healthy changes in
your diet, don't cut out all the fat.
Certain kinds of fat are necessary for a healthy heart, strong immune system,
soft skin and as a source of energy.
So what you need to do is learn to distinguish between good fats and bad fats.
Check the chart on the right side of page 23 to help get you started.
OK. This weekend, make some healthy choices.
And then join us Monday for our monthly VIEWPOINTS lesson.
Until then, take care.
