Welcome back, everyone.
It's a little hard to describe Green World if you've never been there.
It's kind of like a zoo, but it's also kind of like a farm.
It's a place to go and learn, but it's also a great place to go and relax.
It's a place that's designed with kids in mind, but adults will have a great
time too.
OK. Let's return to the lesson now down on line 15.
(Music).
Discover the Wonderful World Around You.
Follow the hiking trail around the lake, and then check out Green World's
colorful collection of macaws.
Watch a macaw show to see these beautiful, intelligent creatures riding
bicycles, doing arithmetic and performing countless other amazing feats.
Plants and Critters.
After the show, be sure to explore the park's Discovery Land section.
There you'll find an incredible array of plants with special areas devoted to
herbs, orchids, cacti and even carnivorous plants.
You'll also find the Lovely Animal Area, which gives park visitors, especially
children, a chance to interact with small animals up close.
So Green World offers the opportunity for all of us city-living people to get
out and experience nature, to learn about nature in a relaxing environment.
And we're kicking off our adventures at Green World at Swan Lake.
All right.
We've learned you can see many different kinds of birds here - of course, swans,
but also geese, ducks and many other different kinds of birds.
That's right.
These geese that are flying down for their annual migration from Siberia are
only visitors.
But you can always see the black and white swans, the pelicans, as well as ducks
at this lake.
And you can see pictures of the different kinds of birds around the area in your
magazine as well as by visiting their website.
OK. But maybe you don't just want to go bird-watching, you want to do something
else.
What else can you do here, Kaylah?
Well, here at the lake, you can follow the hiking trail around the lake, and
then check out Green World's colorful collection of macaws.
OK. So you can do some hiking, explore around the lake.
But I think this is what I'd really want to see the most, Kaylah, is their
collection of macaws.
Now macaws are a very special and very beautiful bird to observe.
They're not a water bird like pelicans or geese.
But you can see pictures of macaws on page 33 in your Studio Classroom magazine.
Now Ryan, I would enjoy the hiking trails because I enjoy getting out in nature,
but these macaws are beautiful.
They're beautiful, but you don't just watch and look at the birds.
There is of little bit more to enjoy here.
You can watch a macaw show and see these beautiful and intelligent creatures
riding on bicycles and doing tricks and arithmetic.
Yeah, that's right.
Now we said that... first described them as a beautiful bird.
Now if you look in your magazine, you will see pictures of a macaw.
And there's no denying that this bird is just beautiful to look at.
There are so many colors that this kind of bird can be! It's... They're...
they're stunning.
Yeah, that's true.
And of course, here you can see them in the show, see them doing tricks, like I
said,
riding bicycles and actually doing arithmetic and performing countless other
amazing feats.
Now I've never seen a bird ride a bike. Have you?
No, I don't think so, actually.
That's an interesting thought.
It must be a very small bicycle.
I hope so.
And yeah, you can see these birds are not only beautiful, they're intelligent.
They can do all these cool tricks.
Now we also see them doing arithmetic.
What's arithmetic?
Arithmetic is, well, math.
It's the adding and subtracting section of studying math.
So these birds are apparently really smart.
OK. So you can see them doing all these tricks as well as performing countless
other amazing feats.
Of course the word "countless" means there are many, many more.
But what's... what is a feat?
A feat is something that you have accomplished, something that maybe seemed
impossible in the beginning but is very impressive that you can do it.
Well, this wraps up Swan Lake.
There's lots of birds to see and shows to be entertained by, but there's more to
Green World than just the lake.
That's right.
Now when you're done with that show, then you can see some Plants and Critters
when you explore the park's Discovery Land section.
Now we know what plants are, but let's define critters. Critters usually refers
to small animals.
So rabbits and rats and hamsters are small animals that you would see.
But we wouldn't... you wouldn't call a dog a critter, though.
Maybe not, yeah.
Usually it's smaller animals you might think of as a critter.
Although sometimes the word "critter" can be used for larger animals as well.
That's right.
Now maybe a raccoon or something like that could be a critter.
So we're going to go see, well, what kind of plants and critters do they have
here at Green World.
OK. You can head on over to the Discovery section.
And there you'll find an incredible array of plants with special areas devoted
to herbs, orchids, cacti and even carnivorous plants.
OK. First let's look at that word "array." To have an array of something means
to have a large variety.
So you can go look at this large... all these large varieties of plants.
There's herbs; orchids are beautiful flowers.
And cacti, we know, is the plural form of the word cactus; so you can go look at
those.
But this is a strange one, Ryan.
What in the world is a carnivorous plant?
OK. Well, a plant or animal that is "carnivorous" eats other animals.
Now you might be thinking, of course, some animals eat other animals for food,
but are there plants that actually eat animals?
Well, you might be surprised.
Absolutely. There are carnivorous plants.
Probably the most popular, most famous one is the Venus flytrap.
And it does, in fact, eat meat.
That is what carnivorous means - they are meat eaters.
So this plant is.
Well, you'll also find the Lovely Animal Area, which gives park visitors,
especially children, a chance to interact with small animals up close.
OK. So this sounds like a wonderful way for you to explore nature and learn from
it.
