Welcome back, everybody.
If you haven't yet, please, take a look at the sidebar information on the right
side of page 39 to learn more about the harmful effects of the sun's ultraviolet
rays.
Right now let's go shopping for sunglasses, not so we can be stylish but so our
eyes can be protected.
Let's find out what to look for in this next reading on line 14.
The Sun Gets in Your Eyes.
When you choose sunglasses, your priority should be protection.
The most important element should be lenses that provide 99 to 100 percent UVA
and UVB protection or a UV 400 protective coating.
Everyone needs the same level of UV protection no matter what their ethnic
background or eye color is.
Ideally, sunglasses should have lenses that wrap around the face and cover the
eyes and surrounding skin and eyelids completely.
People can get skin cancer on their eyelids!
So get in the habit of wearing sunglasses.
Keep them by the door, and always grab them when you go out.
Your eyes will thank you for years and years to come.
(Music).
Friends, today we are encouraging you to protect your eyes.
And one great way to do that is to wear your sunglasses.
That's right, friends.
You need to make sure that you are wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from
UVA and UVB radiation because that can damage your eyes.
They can cause serious eye problems.
So when you choose sunglasses, your priority should be protection.
Now friends, I know that fashion is an important part of sunglasses.
That's why I like to wear "Aviators." Ryan, what kind of fashion glasses do you
wear?
Well, I, too, like Aviators, but today I'm wearing a pair of sunglasses from the
1980s.
And I think I look cool.
Well, they are very cool, Ryan.
But remember, when you pick sunglasses, protection is more important than style.
That's true. It is, in fact, a priority.
And a priority means it should come first.
You should first be worried about protection.
Now the most important element should be lenses that provide 99 to 100 percent
UVA and UVB protection.
OK. Now 99 to 100 percent means they completely block out those harmful rays to
your eyes.
Or you should look for UV 400 protective coating.
So these are the different areas you can look for when you're looking at
sunglasses.
And friends, nowadays even really cool fashionable glasses are made with this
kind of protection.
That's right, friends.
You don't have to wear ugly sunglasses from the 80s to get protection, but you
should make sure that they do have a protective coating.
And a coating is simply a layer that is on top of something.
Now you might be thinking: Well, my eyes are different than your eyes.
And they are!
All of our eyes are different in shape, size and color.
But everyone needs the same level of UV protection no matter what their ethnic
background or eye color is.
OK. So this means, friends, that your "ethnic" background is referring to your
nationality, what nation or what identity you come from.
So we all look different.
And no matter where we come from, no matter how we look or what our eye color
is, it's important to have protection.
Sometimes people think that if you have dark, dark brown eyes, you don't need as
much protection as someone with blue eyes like Ryan.
Yes, I have blue eyes, and you have brown eyes.
But you and I both need to protect our eyes just the same as you, friends.
That's right.
And I have very big eyes!
I always have had big eyes.
But I need to have the same protection as Ryan.
You need just as much, even though my eyes are bigger.
That's true.
And friends, this is true of everyone on earth.
So how can you make sure that your eyes are protected?
Well, ideally, sunglasses should have lenses that wrap around... the face and
cover the eyes and the surrounding skin and eyelid completely.
So you need a full lens.
OK. Now this is an ideal situation, or you can say "ideally." And that word
simply means that is the best possible situation.
That's right.
And this would be best to have a lens that wraps around.
That means it goes over your entire eye area, no matter how big or small that
is.
And covers the entire area, including the skin around it and the eyelid.
OK. Now before I talk about what an eyelid is, Kaylah, I've heard of a lens on a
camera before.
Is that the same thing with sunglasses?
Kind of. It's the same idea.
And that is a piece of glass or plastic that you look through and can adjust
through.
But this is a protective kind of lens.
As we said they're darker, and they protect your eyes.
OK. Now these are protecting your eyelids.
And an "eyelid" is the piece of skin that covers your eye.
When you close your eyes, your eyelids come over your eyes.
That's right.
So when you're... when you go to sleep, we see your eyelids.
Now you might not think your eyelids need to be covered, but people can get skin
cancer on their eyelids.
So you need to be protecting those from the sun.
And that's a terrible disease.
So get in the habit of wearing sunglasses.
That's our tip with Liz.
So let's visit her in Grammar on the Go.
Hi there, friends.
I hope you're all doing well today.
My name is Liz.
And it's time for Grammar on the Go.
I'm in Sydney, Australia.
And it's a beautiful sunny day today, and I'm glad to have my sunglasses.
Speaking of sunglasses, our article today is about the importance of wearing
sunglasses.
And we read:
So get in the habit of wearing sunglasses.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Our focus today is on the phrase, to get in the habit of.
It's a very casual way of saying develop the habit.
This phrase is a very common phrase that native speakers use when they're
talking about starting a habit.
For example, Gary's new job requires him to start work at six in the morning.
He is nervous.
Why?
Gary has never gotten in the habit of getting up early.
Or spending a whole summer working in the mountains, Katherine got used to going
on hikes every evening.
So we can say:
After working in the mountains for the whole summer, Katherine has gotten in the
habit of going on evening hikes.
If you'd like to see some more example sentences, then check out today's Grammar
Tip section for more examples.
Keep up the good work and do please get in the habit of practicing your English
every day.
That's it for now.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go, signing off, in Sydney, Australia.
See you next time.
Bye-bye.
Now get in the habit, and to do this:
Keep your sunglasses by the door, and always grab them when you go out.
This will help protect your eyes.
Yes. And your eyes will thank you for years and years to come.
Friends, join us in putting on our sunglasses and staying safe.
Hello, my beautiful blue eyes.
You are so lovely.
What are you doing?
I'm talking to my lovely eyes.
I love you both.
Yes, those eyes are amazing.
Yes. Did you hear that, eyes?
You are both amazing.
And they deserve protection.
Protection?
What do you mean?
Ta-da! Sunglasses.
Sunglasses?
I don't know...
When you are outdoors, don your sunglasses.
Yeah, but...
Exposure to the rays in sunlight damage the eyes.
It can lead to serious problems.
Oh.
Well, maybe if I could find really stylish sunglasses.
OK. Make protection a priority.
Lenses should provide 99 to 100 percent UVA and UVB protection or a UV 400
protective coating.
Oh. Hey, how do you know what my eyes need?
Everyone's eyes need the same level of UV protection no matter what your ethnic
background or eye color.
Well, what about sunglasses?
Can they be really stylish?
What's the best?
Well, ideally, sunglasses should have lenses that have wrapped around that cover
the face and eyes and eyelids completely.
Oh. You mean hide my beautiful eyes?
I mean protect those beautiful eyes.
Buy sunglasses.
Get in the habit of wearing them.
But what if I forget?
Keep them by the door, and grab them when you go out.
Good idea.
OK. Sorry, my beautiful, lovely blue eyes.
You have to wear sunglasses, but it's for your own protection.
What?
My eyes said Thank You.
You're welcome.
You're welcome.
(Music).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And I guess we have to say goodbye now.
I'll see you next time.
Bye-bye.
OK, Michelle, thank you so much for that.
Friends, your eyes deserve as much protection as you can give them.
So when you're choosing sunglasses, style might be important, but more important
than that is protecting them from UVA and UVB radiation.
By the way, they do make UV protective contact lenses.
If you wear those, though, it's still a good idea to wear sunglasses when you're
outside to protect that small area on the eye that isn't protected by the lens.
OK. Make the rest of your Wednesday great.
And then join us tomorrow when we visit paradise.
We'll see you then.
