Hi, everybody. Thanks for joining us here at Studio Classroom Worldwide.
My name is Steve.
We are in the Philippines on the southern west coast of Cebu, in a small town
called Moalboal.
Now Moalboal is world-famous for being a diving paradise.
But we understand not everyone is interested in jumping ten meters down into the
ocean and swimming with giant whale sharks, scorpion fish and sea snakes.
Well, if that describes you, then today's lesson will be right up your alley.
Let's open our magazines and learn about what we can do in Moalboal above the
water on page 44.
Moalboal: A Diving Paradise.
Exploring Moalboal.
There's a lot to do above the water as well.
In Panagsama Beach there are plenty of small souvenir shops to shop in.
Ride into Moalboal's city center in a local "taxi," a motorcycle with a sidecar.
There you can explore the fruit stands, bakeries and a fish market.
If you're in the mood for something really exciting, book a day trip to go river
trekking, horseback riding or mountain biking!
Hey, friends.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And today we're in our third and final day of Moalboal, Philippines.
Now yesterday, Ryan, we talked about scuba diving,
specifically about a very special island that has an amazing coral reef wall
that you can dive down next to and experience the coral as it goes on a steep
incline down.
And we talked about some amazing creatures.
That's right.
We saw the whale sharks, the biggest fish in the world.
And usually they're not very common.
They're more difficult to find.
But they're very common here in Moalboal.
So you can go here, dive with them.
Or if you don't want to dive, you can stay in the boat or snorkel on the top of
the water.
Now we've talked about diving.
We know that the Panagsama Beach is the diving central for this area.
So we've talked a lot about water activities.
We said you should snorkel and dive and take time to go out on a boat.
But is there more to Moalboal than that?
Of course there is.
There's plenty more to explore.
There's a lot to do above the water as well as below the water.
Now that's exciting.
Usually when you visit a place, you... there's lot to do on land and nothing in
the water.
Or there's all kinds of fun stuff in the water but nothing to do on the land.
But here in Moalboal, there's both.
That's right.
Well, we're back at Panagsama Beach, and we're going to see what else you can do
there.
Well, there are plenty of small souvenir shops.
Now we said that it is a small town, it's a sleepy town, that right here it's
not a very big place, it's a very relaxing place.
But you can still collect the souvenirs that you would like to take home.
OK. And a "souvenir" is like a small gift that you buy in order to remember,
usually, a place or an event.
Now friends, make sure you take time to look in your Studio Classroom magazine
at the spelling of this word.
This is a very strange word, and it is pronounced "souvenir." So practice this
word.
If you ever are traveling and want to take something home with you to remember
the place that you have been, you will need to ask for a souvenir shop.
So practice this word.
OK. It's a great word to practice and a great thing to buy if ever you are
traveling.
And here you can get this at Panagsama Beach.
But what about other places in Moalboal?
Well, ride into Moalboal's center... city center in a local taxi.
Now a city center is that middle part of the city where most of the stuff that
is happening is going on.
Now you can take a "taxi." But Ryan, it's written here in our article, I see it
has quotation marks around it.
Why would a... we know what a taxi is.
Right. They call it a "taxi." But that's not... that's just a name for it.
It's really a motorcycle with a sidecar.
Hmm. That's not really a taxi.
A motorcycle, we know what those are.
But a "sidecar" is a small vehicle that is attached to a motorcycle.
And it has maybe one or three wheels, so it's very small.
And it sits right next to it.
And that way you can have a passenger with you.
And you can see a picture of what a sidecar would look like on page 44.
This is a nice sidecar.
They can be a lot... a lot worse too.
So this is their taxi.
Yeah. And so maybe one, maybe two people could sit in a sidecar.
And you cram in there or squeesh in there, and you just hold on until you get to
the city center.
That doesn't sound like a normal taxi to me.
No, it doesn't.
But it's definitely worth going because there's so much you can do in the city.
There you can explore the fruit stands, bakeries and a local fish market.
OK, so more shopping and more food.
That always sounds good.
Friends, if you are in the "mood" for something really exciting, though, then
you can book a day trip to go river trekking.
Oh. Now "river trekking" is a fun sport that, Ryan, I have participated in.
It's very exciting.
River trekking is a combination of hiking, swimming, bouldering,
and you work as a team to basically hike up a river, not on the side of the
river but in the water itself.
That's right.
You follow the river up and you're climbing over rocks, and it's a lot of fun.
But you can also go horseback riding or mountain biking.
Now all three of these activities get you out into the wild, into the jungle
areas to beautiful places and high energy, fun activities.
So book a day trip so you can go for just the day.
Maybe you'd like to try each one.
So take the time to explore not only the ocean in Moalboal but also the land.
All right.
Ride a bike, ride a horse or follow a river.
These are all exciting events.
Friends, we've got more to tell you.
But first, let's visit the Chat Room.
Yes. I'd like to book a table for two for Friday evening, say, seven o'clock?
And can you please put us in a quiet corner?
That'd be great.
Thanks for your help.
Bye.
Sounds like someone has special plans, eh?
Yep. I'm finally going out on a date again with my wife.
That's a great idea.
But can I ask why did you say book a table?
Does that mean to reserve a table?
Yes, it does.
Say, have you ever booked anything, Ken?
Let's see... I've booked a hotel room, and I've booked a table in a restaurant.
And I've...
I bet you've booked tickets to a concert before.
Right. I book tickets for next month's symphony concert.
Great. And let me know how you like that.
Speaking of booking things, do you know what we say when a place runs out of
seats?
Don't we say it's sold out?
Well, we do say that for concerts and performances.
But for restaurants, we say they are fully booked, booked solid or booked up.
Oh. I didn't know that.
Hey, Bryan, I've also heard this phrase, cooking the books.
That doesn't have anything to do with restaurants, does it?
No, it doesn't.
So let's ask Studio Classroom Editor-in-Chief Doris to explain this one for us.
When a business cooks its books, it changes the numbers of its financial records
or adds false information to them.
The business might do this in order to avoid paying taxes to keep its investors
happy or to hide money in a secret fund.
You know, that explains why I've heard about certain executives cooking the
books.
So it is illegal to cook the books, right?
Yes, very much so.
But you don't have to worry about us cooking any books here at the library.
That's good, because if you did, I wouldn't be able to read them anymore.
Good one, Ken.
