Hello, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today.
My name is Steve.
The simple, cheap, green invention highlighted in this month's Studio Classroom
INNOVATIONS feature is causing hundreds of people to shout:
I can see the light!
The invention is simple because it uses science we all understand - the
refraction of light.
It's cheap and that it costs next to nothing to make and install.
And it's environmentally green because it uses stuff people threw away.
Best of all, it doesn't require any electricity.
Let's learn more now about how this invention is brightening homes and lives
with "A Plastic Bottle of Light" on page 48.
(Music).
A Plastic Bottle of Light.
Plastic bottles are brightening homes and lives in the Philippines.
People often recycle plastic bottles.
But Illac Diaz's non-profit organization, MyShelter Foundation, has found
another use for them.
The foundation uses plastic bottles to bring daylight into the tiny, dark homes
in Manila's poor areas.
These Solar Bottle Bulbs provide cheap and long-lasting light to families who
cannot afford much electricity.
People fill the plastic bottles with filtered water and bleach.
The bottles are then installed into holes in the houses' roofs.
(Music).
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us right here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
My name is Ryan.
And friends, we are taking a look at an INNOVATIONS article.
So first, let's talk about what an innovation actually is.
An innovation is a new idea, something you have come up with and are doing.
So have you had any innovative ideas lately?
Are you creative, friends?
Well, this is a creative way today to deal with leftover plastic bottles.
Now "A Plastic Bottle of Light" is the name of our article, so we know we're
going to look at a lot of plastic.
So you should know what plastic is.
OK.
"Plastic" is a substance that is manmade, or made by people, and you usually
need to recycle it.
You shouldn't just throw it away.
That's right.
Plastic, we use plastic in all kinds of things.
It refers to all the different kinds of plastic as well.
There are many kinds: hard, soft, see-through or not see-through.
But today we're talking about definitely "see-through" because we're making
light plastic bottles.
Yes. Friends, many bottles are made out of glass, but most are made of plastic.
That is the substance we are talking about today.
Now it makes sense we like to use plastic because if you drop it, it doesn't
break very easily.
Now we always have these leftover plastic bottles.
So what are we going to do with them?
How can we use them to help people?
Well, they are brightening homes and lives in the Philippines; and we'll see
how.
Well, people often recycle plastic bottles.
That's a good idea.
You should recycle.
If you're not going to use it anymore, please recycle your plastic.
Yes. Recycling means instead of throwing it away in the trash, you give it to
someone and they can use it again.
But Illac Diaz is a non-profit organization.
His organization is called MyShelter Foundation.
He doesn't just recycle his bottles; he has found another use for them.
OK. Well friends, a "foundation" like we're talking about is an organization or
a company that has started to help other people.
Now a "shelter," in his title he's called MyShelter Foundation.
"Shelter" means some sort of protection, to be taken care of.
So this foundation takes care of people.
OK. And they have found another use for plastic bottles.
Kaylah, what is this use?
Well, the foundation uses plastic bottles to bring daylight into the tiny, dark
homes in Manila.
OK. So they're in Manila, which is in the Philippines.
And that is where they have discovered this use to try and bring daylight, or
light from the sun, into those small, dark homes.
Right, the dark homes that are in the very poor areas of Manila.
Now they need help, they need light, but they don't always have electricity.
So Ryan, how does he use a bottle to help?
OK. Well, they create Solar Bottle Bulbs.
Now a "bulb" is usually made out of glass.
It's a small, round glass carton, or container, that has light that comes out of
it, usually from a piece of wire.
But this is different.
That's right.
Now you know what a light bulb is, that should help you have the same idea and
shape.
And he's doing that here but with bottles.
And so he takes them and uses solar energy to power them; "solar" meaning from
the sun.
OK. And these can provide cheap and long-lasting light to those families who
can't afford very much electricity.
So the families cannot afford to buy the electricity so they need some other way
to light their homes.
So, let's see how he does this.
OK. How do these work, friends?
First, people fill those plastic bottles with filtered water and bleach.
OK. It's important to note this water is filtered.
This is an important part of making this reaction work.
Now "to be filtered" means what?
OK. When you "filter" something, you remove the large pieces from a liquid,
usually by letting it run through something and taking those out.
Now in water, when we say "filtered water," that means it has been cleaned.
It would be safe to drink it as well.
So it's not just taking rocks and dirt out of water, but taking out all the bad
chemicals and germs in it as well.
Yes, completely cleaning it.
And of course, they mix this filtered water with bleach.
That's right.
Now "bleach" is a very strong chemical that we use to clean things.
You put bleach in your laundry to make your clothes turn white.
We also can put it in swimming pools to make the water safe to swim in.
OK. So this is a strong chemical.
And these, the filtered water and the bleach, work together to create light.
Those bottles are then installed into holes in the houses' roofs.
So "installed" means to be put into.
So they go in and cut holes in their roof and put these bottles with filtered
water and bleach in it.
And we're going to see how that works, how long it takes and what they are
providing after we watch today's skit.
Hey! Don't throw away that plastic bottle.
Oops. I forgot.
I should recycle it.
Let me have it.
I can give it to the MyShelter Foundation.
Why?
What can they do with a plastic bottle?
They can turn it into a light bulb.
A light bulb?
You're kidding.
No! Plastic bottles can bring daylight into tiny, dark homes in poor countries.
How can a bottle bring daylight into a house?
First, the bottle is filled with filtered water and bleach.
And then it's a light bulb?
Not quite.
Then it is installed to the hole in a roof of a house.
But what process turns it into a... a light bulb?
The sunlight enters the bottle, and the water allows the light to shine
throughout the room.
It becomes a Solar Light Bulb.
Yes, a solar a bottle bulb.
It gives off about as much light as a 40-watt bulb.
Oh, that's great.
And it can last for five years.
That's so simple and cheap.
Yeah. And it greatly improves the lives of people in poor communities.
These bottles can brighten up the world.
Yes. It's a bright idea.
Hey. Don't forget your bottle.
Oh, yeah.Thanks.
