I hope you had a great break.
Welcome back.
Thomas Edison, he spent a lot of energy and time trying to figure out what to
put in the light bulb to make it burn long and bright.
Now I wonder if he ever thought of using water.
OK, OK.
The plastic bottle of light works only during the day, I know.
But that doesn't take away its ability to improve people's lives.
Let's read on down on line 10.
A Plastic Bottle of Light.
This process takes less than an hour.
Then sunlight enters the bottle, and the water allows the light to shine
throughout the room.
The Solar Bottle Bulbs give off as much light as a 55-watt light bulb.
And each bulb can last for five years.
Such a simple and cheap light source greatly improves the lives of many poor
families.
The project aims to bring light to one million homes in Manila.
Diaz also hopes to take his project to other communities outside of the city.
By doing so, MyShelter Foundation can brighten up the Philippines one bottle at
a time.
(Music).
The non-profit organization MyShelter has been working in Manila, Philippines,
to try and bring light to people in the poor areas there.
In these poor areas of Manila, the homes are small and often very dark because
the families cannot afford electricity.
So this foundation has come up with another option as well as a green option to
help recycle plastic bottles.
OK. So we know they put filtered water and bleach inside these bottles, and then
put them in holes in the roofs of their homes there.
Now it might sound like a long endeavor, a long event to do this.
But this process only takes less than an hour to do.
So they can go in and install or put this whole thing in your home in a very
short process.
Yeah. That's pretty short.
Friends, a "process" is the set of actions that you do to achieve a goal.
OK. And the goal here would be to put in the solar plastic bottle light bulbs
into the people's homes.
Now we know the filtered water and bleach are in them.
How does it work once they are installed?
All right. Well obviously, friends, they are in holes in the roof.
Well, sunlight enters the bottle, and the water allows the light to shine
throughout the room.
So with the filtered water and the bleach, those two, the chemicals in the
bleach mixing with this clean water allows the light to grow and spread all over
the room.
So if you just had one light, it'd just be one little hole of flight.
But with a bottle in there, it allows it to go out and spread around the entire
room.
OK. That's... yeah, that word "throughout" means the whole room is full of
light.
And in fact, it's full of so much light that it's able to give off as much as a
55-watt light bulb.
So you can imagine that if you've just had a hole in your roof, you would get
just a small piece of light that would go straight down and only light that
hole.
But with these bottles, it allows the light to spread throughout the entire
room.
That's right.
Of course, "throughout" means it's everywhere in that room.
It fills the room with as much light as a 55-watt light bulb.
And a "watt" has to do with how much electricity a light bulb is using.
So Kaylah, how much electricity are these bottles using?
None, actually.
These bottles are creating as much light as 55-watt light bulb would but only
using the sun's light to create this kind of... It's incredible.
OK. So these plastic bottles obviously don't use electricity, and they can give
off a lot of light.
Plus, they each last for five years.
This is a wonderful solution for people who don't have much money.
You know, such a simple and cheap light source greatly improves the lives of
many poor families.
Now "this is simple" means it's easy to use, easy to install; and it's cheap.
So it's great.
Yes. And it greatly improves their lives - usually they're living in dark, small
homes and don't have very much light.
So having a light source in your home is a great thing.
And a sources is, of course, where something comes from.
OK. So they've got this light source, they're saving money.
This is a wonderful project.
Well, the project aims to bring light to one million homes in Manila.
So right now it's still working on growing.
But their aim, or their goal, their mission, is to bring light to one million
homes.
Right. And of course, right now they are in Manila in the Philippines, and
they're just trying to help the... the poor families who live there get more
light.
But Diaz also hopes to take this project to other communities outside of the
city.
OK. And so he wants to spread out.
And by doing so, MyShelter Foundation can brighten up the Philippines one bottle
at a time.
That's right.
So by taking it to different communities, he can do this all throughout the
Philippines.
Now a "community" is a group of people living together in a particular place and
in a specific way.
So he hopes to go into other communities even outside the city.
Yes. And they are starting in the Philippines, and they will brighten them one
bottle at a time.
That is our Grammar Tip.
So let's go visit Liz.
Hi there, friends.
Welcome to Grammar on the Go.
My name is Liz.
Our INNOVATIONS article for this month is about how plastic bottles are making a
positive difference in the Philippines.
And here is our Grammar Tip sentence.
By doing so, MyShelter Foundation can brighten up the Philippines one bottle at
a time.
Our focus today is on the phrase at the beginning of the sentence: by doing so.
It's a common phrase native speakers use to mean "by doing what was just
mentioned." So what is the sentence before this?
Diaz also hopes to take his project to other communities outside of the city.
By doing this, MyShelter Foundation can brighten up the Philippines one bottle
at a time.
"By doing so" is usually used in formal situations.
And if you want to tell people how a certain action can lead to a certain
result, then give this phrase a try.
For example: Lena prepares and freezes five lunch boxes every Sunday.
By doing so, she doesn't have to worry about fixing her lunch boxes on weekday
nights.
Or: Jason keeps his electrical appliances unplugged and only plugs them in when
he uses them.
By doing so, he has saved a lot of money on his electric bill.
So friends, give this phrase a try next time when you want to talk about how a
certain result comes from a certain action.
And that's it for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off.
Bye-bye.
So by spreading to other communities, they can bring light to the Philippines
just one bottle at a time.
Friends, I hope you've learned a lot from this innovative idea and can continue
to help people through your innovative recycling ideas.
That's right.
You now know a new way to use your old plastic bottles to help this organization
spread light around the world.
Now take the time to visit their website and learn more.
That's in your Studio Classroom magazine.
Friends, thanks for joining us.
Let's visit the Chat Room.
Wow! Looks like you've been having a really busy day today.
You've been moving things around since I got here, Bryan.
That's right, Ken.
One of my coworkers is sick today, so I had a lot of extra work to do.
Fortunately, I'm almost done.
I just have a few more books to put away.
That's good.
I guess you are finally seeing the light in the tunnel.
You mean the light "at the end of" the tunnel, don't you?
Oh, yeah. That's it.
It means you're coming close to the end of a bad situation, right?
That's right.
Hey, what about the idiom "see the light"?
Does that have the same meaning?
No, it doesn't.
Why don't we have Doris explain what it means.
OK.
"To see the light" means to understand something, or to come to hold a more
correct belief.
For example, you could say, "After studying that subject for several hours, I
finally saw the light," meaning you began to understand it.
Or you could say: At first, Edward didn't think anything was wrong with smoking.
But when his friend got sick because of smoking, he saw the light.
OK. So "to see the light" means to come to understand something.
But "to see the light at the end of the tunnel" means to have hope.
Yes. You got it.
And there's one more idiom about "light" - see the light of day.
What does that one mean?
Well, "to see the light of day" means to be published or brought out.
For example, you could say: If Tina doesn't send her story to a publisher, it
will never see the light of day.
I see.
Well, thanks for taking the time to teach me these idioms.
You're welcome, Ken.
Well, I'd love to talk more, but I'd better get the rest of these books put
away.
OK.
(Chinese).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And that concludes our Language Tips today.
I'll see you next time.
Bye-bye.
Thanks a lot, Michelle.
We appreciate that.
The ordinary act of walking into a dark room and hitting a light switch is a
luxury most of us take for granted.
Now thanks to the simple, cheap and long-lasting Solar Bottle Bulb,
people who have been living in dark homes can have some inside daylight to
brighten their lives.
Solar Bottle Bulbs have already improved the lives of hundreds of families in
the Philippines.
The goal before this year is out: a Solar Bottle Bulb in one million homes.
OK, everyone. Have a great day.
And then join us tomorrow when we talk about the future of tigers.
Take care.
