Hi, everybody. Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
My name is Steve.
Thanks for taking time out of your day to study English with us.
We appreciate it.
For the last two days, we've been discussing the future of the tiger.
And so far the report isn't good.
Some officials warn that by the next Year of the Tiger in 2022, the only tigers
left will be captive tigers, or worse yet, no tigers at all.
So now that we have been made aware of the problem, how should we respond?
Today we'll focus on some things, both big and small, that you and I can do to
help save this magnificent animal.
Join us as we start reading now today's lesson, "How can we make a difference?"
at the bottom of page 51.
(Music).
The Future of Tigers.
Agencies around the world are searching for ways to save this magnificent
animal, but will the solutions come in time?
How can we make a difference?
How can we help governments and agencies like the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) who
are working hard to save the tigers?
Encourage friends and family members to never use anything made from illegal
tiger parts.
Spread the word that governments have found and approved other sources of
traditional medicine made without tiger parts.
Contact officials and ask for stricter laws against poachers and private owners.
(Music).
Hello, friends. Thank you so much for joining us for our last day about tigers.
My name is Kaylah.
And my name is Ryan.
And Kaylah's right, friends.
We're talking about tigers.
And of course, we've seen how beautiful they are and how strong they are.
And we've been learning a little bit about what is affecting them, what is
causing them to be endangered.
Well, we want to find out what we can do.
Yet yesterday, Ryan, it was a little sad to talk about why they're endangered,
why they need their help.
So let's make a lighter mood and give reasons and ways that we can help protect
them.
OK. Well, agencies around the world are searching for ways to save this
magnificent animal.
Mmhm. Agencies from around the world are working together.
Now an angency is a group of people with a common purpose.
So they're working together, and their common purpose then would be, well, to
save the tiger.
Right. And we call tigers magnificent animals.
Something that is magnificent is very amazing, very valuable and beautiful.
But will the solutions come in time?
That's a good question, Ryan.
Since the 1930s, this has been happening.
We've seen this decrease in tigers.
And so far we don't have a solution.
Will we find it in time?
Are we going to find the answer to helping tigers?
Right. And can we actually make a difference even if we do find a way to solve
the problem?
Can we actually do it?
Well, how can we help governments and agencies like the World Wildlife Fund who
are working hard to save the tigers?
Well, we've talked about the WWF before, the World Wildlife Fund.
Now they work to protect plants and animals all over the world that are running
the risk of being extinct.
Right. They try to protect "wildlife," which is talking about the animals that
are in nature, away from humans.
That's right. They're animals and plants that are growing and living without the
help of humans.
So they're trying to get tigers back into this kind of environment because so
many tigers are depending on people to help them reproduce and keep growing.
So how can we help these kinds of organizations get tigers ready?
We have some tips.
That's right, friends. OK.
You can encourage your friends and family members to never use anything made
from illegal tiger parts.
Now I think this goes for all of those animals that the Wildlife Fund is
protecting.
Don't use anything that comes from illegally killed animals.
Don't buy products that are being poached off of different endangered species.
That's true.
Whether it comes from sharks or elephants or other animals like that, that is
"illegal." That means it is not legal.
You are not allowed to do it.
That's right, "illegal" meaning it is against the law.
So encourage your friends and your family to when they are buying different
products to make sure that they are legal products,
that they're not killing animals just to make something.
OK. Now friends, you can also spread the word that governments have found and
approved other sources of traditional medicine that are made without the tiger
parts.
That's right.
We recognize that it is traditional.
And in that, it means that's the way they've done it forever.
But through research and modern science,
governments have approved different kinds of - maybe the word can be
"substitutes" - something you can use instead of using tiger parts to create
these traditional medicines.
And friends, please start to use those products.
We want to save these tigers.
They're worth saving.
And it is worth making a change in just simply changing what you buy.
OK. So this is a decision you can make.
Stop using those products.
Find replacements for those products so that you can help save the tigers.
Now our next tip is to contact officials and ask for stricter laws against
poachers and private owners.
All right.
Now remember, friends, the tigers are still being killed whether you are doing
it or not.
So in order to stop people from killing the tigers, you need to talk to your
government.
Get them to create stronger laws against those poachers and private owners.
That's right.
We see the word "stricter." And to be strict means that something that is very
specific and that there will be some sort of extreme punishment if they do it.
So Ryan, we want strict laws.
We want these people who are illegally killing them to have better punishments
as well as stricter rules on how you can own a tiger privately.
OK. So yeah, you can have private owners of a tiger, and that's what that means.
They own a tiger on their own.
And so if they have a tiger, they need to have rules in order to make sure that
tiger survives and maybe hopefully is able to reproduce.
That's right.
Now "private owners" does not mean the zoo.
Private owners refer to very rich people sometimes have pet tigers because they
look cool.
So we want to make sure that they are being protected even if they are owned by
humans.
Yeah. And sometimes it's actually not legal for a private owner to have a tiger
as well.
So it depends on the government.
Friends, you can make that difference.
Talk to your government.
Make sure they have stricter laws.
Well, we have some more tips for you after we visit the Chat Room.
So Ken, I noticed you left the library in a hurry last night.
Oh, yeah. My cousin flew in from Taiwan, and I told him I'd pick him up at the
airport.
But I lost track of time.
When I left, I just realized I only had ten minutes to get there.
Wow. Did you make it?
Well, I got there 20 minutes after the plane was supposed to land.
But the plane got in late, so I was actually just on time.
That is good.
But actually, Ken, you were in time, not on time.
I was? But I thought those two words meant the same thing.
They're not exactly the same.
Let's have Doris give us an explanation of the difference between these phrases.
When you arrive on time for something, it means that you are there when it is
scheduled to take place.
But if you arrive in time, you are there with enough time for something whether
it was scheduled or not.
For example, you should get to work on time.
But a seriously injured person needs to get to the hospital in time before it is
too late.
I see. So I wasn't on time because I was there after the plane was scheduled to
arrive.
But I was here in time because I was early enough to meet my cousin.
Exactly.
Another difference between these phrases is that you can use the adverb "just"
with in time but not on time.
"To be just in time" means to arrive somewhere in time but almost too late.
But you wouldn't say "just on time." You're either on time or late.
OK. You know, this discussion reminds me of another phrase I'd like to ask you
about.
What does it mean to be "out of time"?
Actually, "out of time" is more or less the opposite of in time.
So it means you don't have enough time for something?
Yes. For example, if a student doesn't finish writing answers to a test before
the time limit, they are out of time.
Oh. That makes sense.
Hey, Bryan, would you like to come to my house for dinner tonight to meet my
cousin?
I'd love to.
And I'll do my best to be there on time.
