Welcome back, everybody.
Hope you had a great break.
Over the last 100 years, the world lost 97 percent of its wild tigers.
Not good.
Now one thing tigers have going in their favor is, unlike panda bears, tigers
can breed fast and freely.
Which means in just ten years, it's possible that their population could double.
OK. Let's look at two more ways we can help save the tigers on line 10.
(Music).
The Future of Tigers.
Pledge to buy wood and paper products made only from legally cleared forests.
Look for products that carry the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) label,
guaranteeing that the item comes from legal sources.
Take a tiger vacation.
Traveling to tiger reserves in India and elsewhere helps provide desperately
needed income and builds support for tiger protection.
WWF hopes to help double the number of tigers in the wild by 2022, the next Year
of the Tiger.
Let's do our part before it's too late to save these amazing animals.
All right, friends.
We're trying to help save the tigers from becoming extinct.
We've seen two things that you can do to help tigers.
And the first one, of course, is to talk to your friends your family members,
try and get everyone you know to stop using traditional medicine that uses tiger
parts.
Of course, the second tip:
try and make sure that there are stricter laws for the poachers - the people who
are hunting tigers - and also private owners as well.
But what about the habitat?
What can we do to help the habit?
That's right.
We saw that one of the major reasons that tigers are going extinct is because
they don't have the habitat to live in anymore.
Well, what can you do to protect it?
You should pledge, pledge to buy wood and paper products made only from legally
cleared forests.
All right.
Now a "pledge" is a formal promise to do something.
It's a very strong promise.
So friends, you can promise that you will not buy wood and paper that are
collected from illegally cleared forests.
Because when you do that, then the tiger begins to lose more of its habitat.
That's right.
We know wood and paper come from trees.
So make sure that the forests that they are coming from are allowed to be being
cleared.
So look for products that carry the Forest Stewardship Council, the FSC label.
OK. So friends, this is a great way for you to find out whether or not the wood
and paper you're buying came from illegally cleared, or destroyed, forests.
Now here we see it's called the... stewardship council label.
What does that mean?
It is the Forest Stewardship Council.
Now "stewardship" refers to your... if you are responsible for a product or for
something, how you use or spend it.
So here before that word we see "forest," so they're responsible for keeping the
forest intact, for keeping the forest growing correctly to protect it.
So how well are they doing that is the representation of their stewardship.
OK. And they are a council.
Friends, a "council" is a group of people that are in charge of an organization,
or in charge of doing something.
So if we break this down to really simple terms, the FSC is in charge of
protecting the forest, and this is keeping track of how well they're doing it.
OK. Now so you look for a label, friends, that tells you that this organization
has made sure that it is safe for you to buy and safe for the tigers.
That's right.
Now this guarantees that the item comes from legal sources.
And that will help protect the tiger because if we stop buying illegal products,
stop using illegal... wood and paper from illegal trees and illegal products
that they take from tigers to make medicines, we'll be protecting them.
OK. So we're seeing ways that you can prevent hunting of tigers,
you can prevent tigers being poached for medicine and you can try and protect
their habitat.
Well, maybe you're thinking: OK, I can help by buying different things, but I
would like some hands-on experience.
So take a tiger vacation.
All right.
And this means that you can travel to tiger reserves such as in places in India
and elsewhere.
And that helps provide funding.
That's right.
So take a vacation to travel to a reserve.
Now a reserve is a large piece of land that is used to help protect animals and
plants as well as to help them reproduce.
It provides both hunting and mating grounds for tigers where they're guaranteed
to be safe.
So take a vacation to India and visit these tigers.
Yeah. These reserves are not only designed to help the tigers, they also give
you a place where you can learn about them,
experience them and go and actually see these tigers up close.
And by doing that, you help provide funding.
Now this funding is desperately needed income.
When something is "desperately" needed, what does that mean?
OK. That means extremely or very much, that word "desperately," so.
We... this means that they need a lot of income.
It is a very extreme need.
And that income is very useful, why?
Well, it helps build support for the tiger protection programs.
So that's what we're looking for is we want to be protecting them.
You raise funding by visiting, and you get a cool experience, and you help
tigers in the long run too because it raises awareness.
Yeah. Most of us forget that in order to protect tigers, it takes a lot of money
and a lot of effort.
And so even if you can't go to forests and try and help tigers, other people
can.
And they need your support.
So feel free to take a vacation.
Enjoy the tigers, and try and help these people.
Well, the WWF hopes to help double the number of tigers in the wild by 2022
because that is that next Year of the Tiger.
OK. So friends, let's do our part before it's too late to save these amazing
animals.
So friends, join in being a part of the difference.
Make the changes in your life to buy products that help protect tigers.
And help... raise awareness so the next Year of the Tiger can be a wonderful
one.
All right. Now friends, let's enjoy the skit.
I really like tigers.
Tigers are terrific.
Hey, do you know any tiger jokes?
Tiger jokes?
Yeah. Here's one.
Where does a tiger sleep?
Anywhere it wants to.
Hey, how did you know?
Everybody knows that.
Well, here's one you don't know.
Why did the tiger lose the poker game?
Why did the tiger lose the poker game?
I don't know. Why?
He was playing with a cheetah.
He was playing with a cheetah.
But cheetah's a big cat!
Yeah, but it sounds like the word "cheater." Get it?
He was playing with a cheetah, or a cheater.
OK. OK. Well, here's one for you.
Who went into the tiger's den and came out alive?
Who went into the tiger's den and came out alive?
Yeah. The tiger!
All right, all right.
Well, what do tigers sing at Christmas?
I don't know. What do tigers sing at Christmas?
"Jungle" bells, "jungle" bells.
That's funny.
Well, here's another question for you.
Which side of the tiger has the most stripes?
Which side of the tiger has the most stripes?
I give up.
The outside! Ha...
Well, I guess it's time to go.
Wait, wait, wait...
One more. One more.
Why do tigers eat raw meat?
I don't know. Why do tigers eat raw meat?
Because they don't know how to cook!
Tigers are great.
They're terrific.
Yeah. They're really funny.
That too.
(Chinese).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And we're running out of time again.
I'll see you next time. Bye-bye.
Thank you, Michelle.
Tigers, admired for their strength and beauty, are the largest of the big cats.
Yes, even bigger than lions.
Now loss of habitat has become a major threat to tigers.
In fact, just seven percent of tigers' original habitat remains.
So encouraging people to never use illegal tiger parts, demanding stricter laws,
and buying products from legally cleared forests are some great things that we
can do to help give tigers a chance to survive until 2022,
the next Year of the Tiger and beyond.
Friends, pack your bags because on Monday, we're taking a trip.
Until then, have a great weekend.
Bye-bye.
