Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to study with us.
My name is Steve.
This month Studio Classroom TRAVEL feature takes us to the southeastern state of
Florida in the U.S.
Now with its sunshine and warm winters, Florida is the most popular vacation
destination in the whole country.
There's Disney World for the kids, Daytona Beach for the college students and
St. Petersburg area for the older folks.
But smart tourists know about another place in Florida, not really as famous but
stunningly beautiful and fun.
It's called the Emerald Coast.
Let's open our magazines now to page 22 and see why tourists flock to this coast
of northwest Florida.
(Music).
The Emerald Coast.
Stunning scenery and a wide range of activities draw tourists to the coast of
northwest Florida.
Florida boasts almost 700 miles of sandy beaches that are perfect for swimming.
But for fine, white sand, nothing beats Florida's northwest coastline.
The Emerald Coast delights visitors with sugar-white shores.
The emerald green waters that wash those shores give the coastline its name.
In years past, just a few sleepy, little fishing villages dotted the area.
Today, tourists from around the world arrive to see what USAToday.com called
"the best beach in the United States." The friendly,
small-town atmosphere still exists along with luxury hotels and five-star
restaurants.
Hello, everyone.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And friends, I am excited because it is my favorite article of the month.
We are in our TRAVEL article.
And as you all know, I love going new places.
And today we're traveling to a place that I've never been.
Oh, you've never been here.
Well, excellent.
Friends, we get to learn together about the Emerald Coast.
The Emerald Coast.
Well, let's first describe what this word "emerald" means so you've an
understanding of what it might look like here.
Now "emerald" describes a bright green color that is maybe a little bit
transparent.
So light does go through it.
And often it is a... refers to a stone of this color.
But here we're talking about the color, this beautiful blue green color.
That's right, friends.
The emerald, noun, is a green gem used in jewelry, and so we use that word as an
adjective to describe something that is a beautiful green color.
That's right.
And this beautiful blue green color is describing the water.
And this is the stunning scenery that we're talking about.
Here on the northwest coast of Florida, there's a wide range of activities to
draw tourists in.
OK. So the scenery, or the... the way things look there is very stunning.
It makes you feel amazed.
And so there's a lot here in northwest Florida for people to see.
Now to get an idea of where in the United States we are, check your magazine on
page 22 and there is a map to show you this coast.
OK. Now Florida boasts almost 700 miles of sandy beaches that are perfect for
swimming.
But for fine, white sand, nothing beats Florida's northwest coastline.
For fine, white sand - the "fine" in that describes something that is very soft.
Yeah. And these beaches are very soft.
And like it says here, Florida boasts over 700 miles of these beaches.
Now if you "boast" something, that means that you are very proud of it because
you offer it, and it's very good.
Well, Ryan, not 700 beaches of this beautiful sand; 700 miles of beach, but this
specific section is very special.
That's right.
For fine, white sand here, nothing beats Florida's northwest coastline.
Well, the Emerald Coast delights visitors with sugar-white shores.
Now to "delight" means to give great pleasure or satisfaction or happiness.
So when you go to this place, you're very happy with how beautiful and white and
soft the sand is.
Yeah. It's very white.
It says here it's sugar-white.
And so when you put those two words together, that means the color of the sand
is the same as the color of sugar.
That's right.
And here we're not talking about white grainy sugar; we're talking about the
very powder soft.
That is what describes the sand.
Sounds beautiful, almost snow-like, I would imagine.
Well, the emerald green waters that wash these... across these shores give the
coastline its name.
OK. So this is how the coastline gets its name.
And so a "coastline" here... we talked about a coast is actually the edge of the
water where the land meets the ocean.
That's right.
And we have some more information about that.
So let's visit the Information Station.
Bryan, when most people think of Florida, they usually think of Disney World or
Miami Beach and the Florida Keys.
Those are the things that come to mind.
That is right, Bill.
So I'm glad that we're exploring the Emerald Coast to discover another part of
Florida that's great to visit.
This article talks about Destin and boat rides, sandy beaches and wedding
photos.
But there are many other activities that our viewers might be interested in.
Oh, yeah. And to learn about some of these, let's head over to...
Information Station.
Well, one of my favorite pastimes, Bryan, is golf.
And this area of Florida has over 50 golf courses available for players like me.
If any of our friends here in Taipei miss their motorcycles while in Florida,
well, they can rent scooters to cruise along the coastal roads.
One thing they won't miss is the traffic as they enjoy wide open roads and
beautiful views of the Gulf of Mexico.
And speaking of the Gulf of Mexico, Bill, there are plenty of activities in
addition to boating that take place on the water.
Snorkeling and scuba diving are popular with tourists, and a great way to see
sea coral and underwater animals.
Banana boat rides are a fun way for the whole family to enjoy the waves and
crystal blue waters.
And if you like to go a little bit faster, then rent a jet-ski and zip around
like a Speed Racer.
Oh, yeah!
And for the really brave visitors, how about a bird's eye view of the Emerald
Coast?
That's right, Bryan.
Parasailing will take you 200 feet up in the air for a thrilling ride in the
sky.
Whoo! I want to try that one, Bill.
Well, you can if you head to the Emerald Coast of Florida for a week of fun in
the sun.
I need to call my travel agent right now.
So we'll see you all next time here at...
Information Station.
All right.
In years past, or in recent years, just a few sleepy, little fishing villages
dotted the area of the Emerald Coast.
That's right.
Now "sleepy" refers to it being very calm and relaxing.
But today, tourists from around the world arrive to see what USAToday.com
called: the best beach in the United States.
OK. So people are coming to these fishing villages filled with people who
generally fish.
And here the newspaper says the friendly, small-town atmosphere still exists
along with luxury hotels and five-star restaurants.
So that small-town, that little environment, the people that know each other,
the welcoming and relaxing environment still exists.
But because it is known as the United States' best beach, there are now
five-star restaurants and luxurious hotels to greet the tourists.
All right, sounds beautiful.
Friends, join us after this video for some more information.
(Music).
The Emerald Coast of northwest Florida, it's not just a place, it's a lifestyle.
For those who call Destin, Fort Walton Beach or Okaloosa Island home, it's a
chosen way of life.
For those who visit the Emerald Coast for the first time, it's truly unexpected.
But as you come back often, the Emerald Coast is a getaway,
a place to escape from reality where you always leave refreshed by feeling it
washes over you like the signature emerald green waters.
(Music).
Everyone who passes through the heart of the Emerald Coast absorbs the
sugar-white sand, takes away a little as a permanent part of themselves.
Your time awaits.
This is your invitation to get a little sand in your soul.
