Thanks for joining us.
My name is Steve.
We're taking a three-day vacation to the Emerald Coast located in what is called
the panhandle of Florida.
The Emerald Coast gets its name from the dazzling green color of the ocean
water.
Now every year, millions of tourists from around the world visit the Emerald
Coast to see its stunning scenery and enjoy its wide range of activities.
One of those activities is fishing.
Let's go to the Emerald Coast community of Destin and learn why it's called the
"World's Luckiest Fishing Village" on page 23.

The "World's Luckiest Fishing Village".
One of the most popular activities along the coastline is fishing, and Destin,
Florida, is world-renowned for the sport.
The small coastal town claims the title of "The World's Luckiest Fishing
Village." Of the 4.5 million people who visit the Emerald Coast each year,
over 80 percent travel to Destin.
For those who plan to finish, endless opportunities await them there, both from
the shore and on a boat.
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
My name is Ryan.
And friends, you are back with us for our TRAVEL article this month looking at
the Florida Emerald Coast.
Now I love traveling, especially to nice beach areas.
And this beach is very special because of the sand.
We learned yesterday that the sand is extremely soft.
It is like powder.
And it is white because it gets bleached by the ocean water and the rocks that
it comes from.
That's right. The sand is beautiful, soft and cool.
But we also heard a little bit yesterday that there are fishing villages on the
coast as well.
That's right.
We said in the past it was mostly sleepy fishing villages.
Now a fishing village is where families live, who, their main job is, well,
fishing.
And that has not changed.
Even with all the tourists coming in, it's a very popular place to fish.
All right.
So now we see the World's Luckiest Fishing Village.
Let's see what this is all about.
Well, this is an interesting title to have - the World's Luckiest Fishing
Village.
I would like to go there.
I'm terrible at fishing.
Well actually, I'm not that great either.
But this would be a lot of fun.
Friends, one of the most popular activities along the coastline is fishing, and
Destin, Florida, is world-renowned for the sport.
That's right.
Now fishing is referred to as a sport.
And we say it is "world-renowned." That means it is known all over the world.
It's a very popular place, and one people like to go because of, well, the luck
that you can get there.
Right. And something that is renowned is well-known and respected.
The small coastal town claims the title of The World's Luckiest Fishing Village.
We have the word "coastal" here.
We learned yesterday that the coastline is the edge of the land that meets the
water.
Now the "coastal" area is the adjective describing things that are along that
land edge, along the coastline.
So the coastline is where things are located directly next to the ocean.
OK, exactly. We remember that from yesterday.
Now Kaylah, why is this one small town called The Luckiest Fishing Village?
Well, of the 4.5 million people who visit the Emerald Coast each year, over 80
percent travel to Destin.
Oh, OK. Well, so 80 percent of the people who travel go to Destin, this tiny
town.
And so I wonder why they would go to this "world-famous" lucky fishing village.
Well, I'm going to assume that they probably think they're going to catch a fish
there.
If you're going to be lucky, that means you're probably going to get a large
fish, not just a small one.
Right. So for those who plan to fish there, endless opportunities await them,
both from the shore and on a boat.
That's right.
There are definitely two ways to do fishing in the ocean.
You can fish from the shore - and that is from the edge of the land, standing on
the land or maybe a dock.
Or you can fish from a boat.
Now I personally like fishing off of a boat because I just like the excuse to be
out in the water.
Well, I used to go fishing with my grandfather in a boat, and sometimes I would
find it boring.
You just sit in the boat and wait for a fish.
So I actually like fishing from the shore, from the edge of the water.
But Ryan, I think if you went to "The Luckiest Fishing Village" in the world, it
probably would not be very boring.
Well, that's true.
Both of those opportunities await you there.
Now if something "awaits" you, that means, well, it's waiting for you.
So these options for you are there and available for you to use.
Now we said there are two - you can fish from the shore or boat, but we have
this word "endless." We say there are endless opportunities.
That means there are so many, they just continue to happen.
All of your imagination plus some is how many opportunities there are there.
Yeah, it will never end.
There will always be opportunities for people to fish once they go to this
village.
That's right.
Now Ryan, let's took a look back at how many people actually come to this town.
Destin is described as being a small fishing village.
But 80 percent of 4.5 million is a lot of people.
How do you think this town can handle so many?
That's a good point.
Well, especially if they are world-famous for being lucky, people will want to
go there very often.
I would hope that there are enough places for people to stay there because 4.5
million people visit the Emerald Coast every year,
and 80 percent of them go to this one tiny village.
Well, with endless opportunities, I imagine that each person gets a unique and
very special experience, and hopefully, a lucky fishing one as well.
That's right.
Friends, we'll learn a lot more about what makes this fishing village so lucky
in a little bit.
There are definitely opportunities to fish here.

The Emerald Coast, eh?
What are you planning to do there?
Nothing really.
I just want to lie under the sun on a white sandy beach and read a good book.
That sounds like a great way to spend a vacation.
Yeah. You know, it's been a long time since I was a tourist, so I hope I'll be
able to relax.
Uh Ken, it doesn't sound like you're going to be a tourist.
Are you doing any other activities besides relaxing on the beach?
What other activities?
You know, see the historical sights, visit the museums, go shopping, stuff like
that.
Are you kidding?
I want to get away from people.
That's why I'm going there.
The only "activity" I'll be doing is going into the water for a dip, grabbing a
nice drink and watching the sunset.
Then in that case, you're not a tourist.
I'm not?
Then what am I?
You're a vacationer.
Vacationer!
Hey, I like the sound of that.
That's who you're going to be if all you want to do is kick back and relax.
Yep, you got that right.
So what are tourists like?
Well, you can spot tourists from a mile away.
They're always carrying a camera or holding a map.
And they have a tight schedule to keep so that they can see all the Top 10 sites
of a particular place.
Where they'll buy postcards that they'll send to their friends back home to show
off where they've been.
You got it.
So are you more of a tourist or a vacationer?
Oh, I'm definitely a vacationer.
I already see many people here at the library every day.
When I go on a vacation, I want to look at things in nature, not people.
So when you're done planning your vacation, Ken, can I take a look at that
brochure?
