Welcome back.
You don't have to love fishing to love Destin, but it would help if you love to
eat fish.
Besides Destin's annual fishing rodeo, there's Destin's annual seafood festival.
These celebrations both take place in October, so plan your trip to Destin
accordingly.
OK. Let's wrap up today's reading on line 11 with a little more about The
World's Luckiest Fishing Village of Destin.
(Music).
The Emerald Coast.
Destin is best known for deep-sea fishing, with a fleet of more than 140 fishing
boats to choose from.
The boats offer half-day or full-day fishing trips, many providing snacks, bait
and free lessons, if needed.
Most of the boats can carry 25 to 105 people, and everyone onboard is hoping to
snag a 400-pounder!
As they say in Destin, "You'll come for the beach, but you'll be back for the
fishing!".
"Here comes the bride".
The Emerald Coast is also a popular destination for weddings.
Many consider the ocean backdrop and the pure, white sand under their feet the
perfect setting for an unforgettable wedding day!
Destin, a small fishing village on the Emerald Coast, is considered The World's
Luckiest Fishing Village.
Almost four million people visit this small town every year.
That's right.
There are millions of people who visit the Emerald Coast and 80 percent of them
will visit Destin, even though it's just a small fishing village.
But why would they do that?
Well, it's because it is the luckiest fishing village in the world.
But Ryan, what makes it that?
Well, I guess we'll find that out right now.
We know there are many opportunities for people who want to fish in different
ways.
Now we learned that there are multiple ways, endless ways, to enjoy fishing in
Destin.
We mentioned two.
One is fishing from the shore, and the other is fishing from a boat.
And the boat is what we're going to talk about first.
Exactly.
Destin is actually best known for deep-sea fishing, with a fleet of more than
140 fishing boats to choose from.
OK, let's start with that term, deep-sea fishing.
Now deep-sea fishing means you go far out into the ocean and you... you're
fishing at very, very deep depths.
So you're throwing your line very far into the water to where it gets super dark
down there.
Now I know my father loves to fish like this.
Yes. In fact, I've gone deep-sea fishing off of the California coast.
And the fish that you can catch are huge.
I caught maybe almost a 100-pound fish.
Wow, congratulations!
Well, thanks.
Well, here if you go to Destin, they have a fleet of 140 fishing boats that you
can choose from to go deep-sea fishing.
Now a "fleet" refers to a group of boats or ships that all go together.
Usually refer to a fleet, you'll hear it very often in the military.
When we're talking about the navy, which is the ocean, they have fleets of
boats, groups of boats that travel together.
But these are military boats.
These are fishing boats.
That's right.
Now the word "fleet" can also describe groups of other vehicles as well, but
it's usually used for groups of boats.
That's right.
And here we're talking about fishing boats; and you can choose from 140
different fishing boats.
Now friends, if you have ever visited a fishing town, you know that 140 boats is
a lot to choose from because usually you have maybe 40.
But 140 is a very large number.
That's right.
Now you do have an option to choose between the way you fish.
And if you choose to use a boat, you have even more options.
The boats offer half-day or full-day fishing trips, many providing snacks, bait
and free lessons, if needed.
So you can go all day or just half day, you can get snacks to eat.
They provide your bait. And "bait" is what you put on the hook to catch a fish.
And if you've never fished before, you can have lessons.
That's right.
And we see the phrase "if needed." That means if you need lessons, they offer
them for free.
If you don't, you don't have to take them.
Yep. Now most of the boats can carry 25 to 105 people, and everyone onboard is
hoping to snag a 400-pounder!
400-pounder!
If we're using the word "pounder" behind the number, that means that's how much
something weighs.
So I said earlier I caught a 100-pound fish; well, people here can catch
400-pound fish.
That's a huge fish, friends.
If you think a normal person probably weighs between 150 to 170 pounds, this is
400 pounds of fish!
Oh, my goodness.
And these boats are quite big.
They can carry many people.
So you could go with a group of friends.
And you're hoping that you're the one who snags this very big fish.
Now to "snag" something means to get or catch something by acting very quickly.
So when you're fishing, once you've waited the time, you'd have to act quickly
to snag the fish,
to pull the fish in, to get the hook in their mouth and pull them out of the
water.
OK. Now as they say in Destin: You'll come for the beach, but you'll be back for
the fishing.
You'll be excited for the fishing.
Well, that is our Grammar on the Go sentence.
So let's visit Liz.
Greetings from Florida, friends.
My name is Liz.
And it's time for Grammar on the Go.
Our article today is on Destin.
And we read:
As they say in Destin, "You'll come for the beach, but you'll be back for the
fishing." That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Notice the phrase at the beginning of the sentence, "As they say in Destin."
They, or these people.
When we want to talk about people in general and how they feel, say or do
things, we use - they.
So today's sentence just means that there is this common statement that you'll
hear people in Destin say:
You'll come for the beach, but you'll be back for the fishing.
We often use this expression "as they say" when we want to talk about a common
idea or a saying to support a situation or to explain a situation.
For example:
As they say, "History repeats itself," so don't be surprised if you see the same
mistake happening again.
Or: Old Mr. Richardson still goes to the post office to mail letters and refuses
to learn how to use e-mail; as they say,
"You can't teach an old dog new tricks." If you want to see some more example
sentences,
you can find them in today's Grammar Tip action in your Studio Classroom
magazine.
That's all the time we have for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go, signing off, in Florida.
Bye-bye.
Thank you very much, Liz.
All right.
So we've learned all about "The World's Luckiest Fishing Village." But what is
next?
"Here comes the bride." Now this is a phrase we say in English when we're
referring to a wedding.
It's a song.
It's also something we say when it's time for a wedding, you stand up and turn
around and: Well, here comes the bride!
That's right.
In a Western wedding, everyone comes and waits at the front, and then the bride
is the most important person who comes to the front.
Now the Emerald Coast is a popular destination for weddings.
Many consider the ocean backdrop and pure, white sand under their feet the
perfect setting for an unforgettable wedding day!
All right.
A "setting" is a location; it could also be a time or a place usually of a
story.
But here we're talking about the place.
It's a very beautiful place.
You can see pictures of an Emerald Coast wedding, and you would understand why
it's such a beautiful setting.
We're going to talk more about the Emerald Coast and what it has to offer
tomorrow.
But now let's watch this video.
