Hello, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us.
My name is Steve.
For many of us, dieting is clouded in mystery.
It seems a method that is acceptable one day is forbidden the next.
A food that was considered healthy yesterday is, today, off limits.
Confusing, right?
Well, in this month's HEALTH feature, we want to bring some clarity to the
situation by separating fact from fiction.
Knowing the truth about losing weight should, hopefully, make your dieting
experience easier and healthier.
Now let's get into our lesson with myth number 4, Your weight depends on your
genes, on page 49.
(Music).
Diet Myths.
4. Your weight depends on your genes.
If you and your family have problems with obesity, you are not destined to be
fat.
While a "fat gene" does exist, its influence on your size is actually pretty
small.
Smart eating and exercise have a much greater impact than your genes.
Only 25 percent of your weight is controlled by genes - the rest is up to you!
5. Say "no" to junk food - no exceptions.
Many people think that the key to losing weight is cutting out all bad foods.
But the more restrictive your diet is, the more likely you are to break it - and
in a big way.
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
And I am here with Ryan.
And we are discussing Diet Myths.
That's right, friends.
Yesterday we started talking about some things you may have heard about dieting
that you might think are true, but are really not.
For example, we learned that not all carbs are bad for you.
The second myth is you might think you can just skip a meal if you're going to
have a large meal later.
But that's not true either.
What else, Kaylah?
We learned that you cannot target where you lose weight.
Unfortunately, you cannot choose to only lose weight in your stomach.
Instead you need to work your entire body and hope for the best.
All right.
And when you do that, your whole body will become healthier because it's not
just about getting skinnier.
It's actually about being healthy.
That's right.
We're moving on into our fourth myth.
And our myth is your weight depends on your genes.
All right.
First, I think it's important to know what are genes.
We're not talking about pants here.
The word "genes," G-E-N-E-S, is talking about what comes from your family that
makes you who you are.
That's right.
Now we... usually we think, well, the size of my genes depends on my weight.
But it doesn't go the other way around.
Your family does not determine how you gain or lose weight.
Right.
If your family has problems with "obesity," which is when you are extremely
overweight,
well, that doesn't mean that you are destined to be fat.
That's right.
As Ryan said, obesity means extremely overweight or extremely fat.
Now that does not mean that you're destined to be fat.
"Destined" means it is intended for a specific purpose, or that is the only
option that is what your future will be.
Yeah. If you are destined to be or to do something, that means it is going to
happen whether you want it to or not.
And that is not true for obesity.
That's right.
You are not destined to be fat or to be skinny.
While a fat gene does exist, it influence... its influence on your size is
actually pretty small.
OK. So influence is the effect that it has on you.
And so here we're seeing that its size is actually pretty small.
Smart eating and exercise have a much greater impact than your genes.
Only 25 percent of your weight is controlled by genes.
So the rest is up to you.
All right. So only one quarter of your weight is controlled by your genes, and
the rest is your choice.
Now we have some more information, so let's visit the Information Station.
Bryan, losing weight is something that many people want to do but few people
actually do it right.
I think, Bill, that's because there is a lot of wrong information out there
about dieting.
Well, to help all of us understand diets and how to lose weight, we have a
special guest over at...
Information Station.
Bill, today we're talking with Nancy Nutrition, an expert in healthy living.
Welcome, Nancy.
Great to be here on Information Station.
Nancy, it seems like there are a million ways to lose weight, but few of them
work.
There are a couple of reasons for that.
First, many people listen to their friends' talk about diets and losing weight
and all of their advice.
Well, how many of your friends are nutritionists like me?
Uh, well...
Not too many.
You have a good point, Nancy.
That's right.
None of my friends are nutritionists.
Me neither.
Exactly.
So why would you listen to them when it comes to dieting?
See, many people go on extreme diets because they hear something from a friend
or see an article on the Internet.
That's right, Nancy.
There are all kinds of diets.
There are no-carb diets.
Let's see, no-fat diets, high-protein diets and then there are...
Most of them only work for a short period of time.
And most of them are not good for you.
So what do you suggest?
Losing weight is a lifestyle choice.
We need to change the way we live, work, sleep, exercise, and look at dieting as
a long-term change,
not something we do for three months.
Nancy, I know many people set out to lose, let's say, 10 or 20 kilos but get
frustrated and then quit their diets.
The first thing I recommend is setting a small goal, like losing three kilos in
the first month.
Anybody can achieve a small goal, and then continue that to larger goals.
You mentioned exercise, Nancy.
Should people join a gym or start running a lot each day?
Walking is the best way for people to lose weight.
A 30-minute walk each day will help you to lose weight, and walk up the stairs
or to the store.
You don't have to become an Olympic athlete to lose weight.
That's good news.
Well, do you have any other suggestions for us, Nancy?
Don't eat a large dinner.
Many people eat large dinners late in the day and then sit around after this.
Eat a modest dinner, and then go for a walk.
These all sound like easy principles to use for losing weight.
Thank you, Nancy Nutritionist, for joining us today.
It was my pleasure being here on...
Information Station.
OK. Our fifth myth about dieting is saying "no" to junk foods - no exceptions.
OK, so.
If you are saying no to junk food, then you're saying no to the kinds of foods
such as cookies and cakes and candy.
Those are junk food.
If we say no exceptions, what does that mean?
Well, an exception means not following the rule.
So this "no exception" would mean you always follow the rule.
You always say no to junk food.
Now Ryan, I would think that you should say no to junk foods because they're
just not good for you.
Well...
How is that a myth?
Yeah. That's what you would think that you should never, ever eat food that is
bad for you or has a lot of calories.
But that's not true.
Many people might think that the key to losing weight is actually cutting out
all those bad foods.
But that's not.
Yeah. That's not true.
The more restrictive your diet is, then the more likely you are to break it, and
in a big way.
Now "restrictive" means it is something that is taking away your freedom.
It is tying you down.
It's forcing you into very strict rules.
So if you have a very restrictive diet, it's only letting you eat certain
things.
But you're going to be more likely to break it, an in a big way.
We'll talk about what that means.
That's right.
We'll learn more after the break.
But right now let's visit the Chat Room.
Hi, Ken.
What are you reading today?
Oh. I'm just taking a short break.
Actually, I'm looking at your latest post on Facebook.
Hey, can you explain what it means?
Oh, that.
Yeah. It turns out that what I thought was good news really isn't so good.
What do you mean?
I thought the post was about losing weight.
Right.
There was a story I found saying that your weight depends on your genes.
That's funny.
Why should the pants you wear influence your weight?
Ken, come on, not jeans, J-E-A-N-S, but genes, G-E-N-E-S.
Oh, right, those kind of genes.
They have something to do with our DNA, right?
You got it.
Um, but wait, and why wouldn't that be good news?
Because it's only partially true.
They discover that the so-called fat gene doesn't have as much influence as
first thought.
So I can't blame all of my weight on my genes, G-E-N-E-S.
That's OK, Bryan.
You just need to watch your diet like the rest of us.
And come to think of it, I've never seen you wear the kind of jeans, J-E-A-N-S.
That's true, Ken. I guess you're right.
Say, Bryan, isn't "Jeans" also a woman's name?
That's Jean, J-E-A-N, no S.
And did you know that Gene, spelled G-E-N-E, can also be a man's name?
Oh, you are right.
I'm a big fan of the actor Gene Hackman.
Me too. He's been in some great action movies.
That's for sure.
Well, thanks for teaching me about these different kinds of G-E-N-E-S.
You bet.
