OK. I hope you had a great break.
Welcome back.
Did I read it right?
Tip number 5 said I could eat junk food while I'm on a diet.
Really?
Yes, I think I did read it right.
In truth, it's OK to treat yourself to your favorite unhealthy snack once in a
while.
OK. Well, you might ask: How often is that?
Let's return to the reading on line 22 and find out.
(Music).
Diet Myths.
To lose weight and keep it off, eat great 80 percent of the time, but indulge in
a treat or two the other 20 percent.
6. It's OK to splurge on the weekend.
Making bad food choices every Saturday and Sunday will have an effect on how
much weight you lose.
In one study, scientists found that when dieters ate what they wanted on the
weekends,
they undid all of their healthy progress during the week.
Instead of choosing a difficult diet you need a "break" from every week, find
one you can manage, and stick to it every day.
(Music).
So don't put yourself under really tight restrictions because you're more likely
to break those rules.
"To break them in a big way" meaning very large or more likely to just forget
about it completely.
OK, so we have a secret for you here.
In order to lose weight and keep it off, that means to stay healthier and
thinner,
then you should eat great, or eat healthy, 80 percent of the time, but indulge
in a treat or two the other 20 percent.
There you go.
That's a great rule.
To eat very healthy 80 percent of the time, and to indulge 20 percent of the
time.
Now to indulge has a really good and exciting meaning for us here.
Yes, it does.
If you "indulge" in something, that means that you have or enjoy something very
fun.
So maybe you eat salads and light chicken and just light meals throughout the
week.
But when you come to Saturday, you get to eat the brownie you've been wanting to
eat in the kitchen.
Yeah, you get to... you're allowed to have something unique and exciting.
And that's OK.
You should not stay away from junk food completely.
That's right.
Now this kind of goes with our next rule.
Our next myth here is it's OK to splurge on the weekends.
So let's... see, that's a myth.
And we're going to compare that to the first myth.
OK. The first myth, of course, says, well, you shouldn't eat any junk food.
But we learned that you can 20 percent of the time.
So then you might think, well, then it's OK to splurge on the weekend.
What does it mean to splurge?
To "splurge" means to spend a lot of something.
So maybe you go off of your diet a lot, not a little bit but a lot.
Yeah. If you're splurging on something, that means you are enjoying something
special.
Maybe you might think of this as spending a lot of money on something fun.
For example, if you're going to fly, it is cheaper to fly economy class.
But you might splurge and fly first class.
OK. So if you splurge on the weekend, that means you get to eat whatever you
want just because it's Saturday or Sunday.
Now making bad food choices every Saturday and Sunday will have an effect on how
much weight you lose.
So just because you're not at work does not mean your body doesn't respond to
the food.
That's right.
Even if you're eating healthy all week but not healthy on the weekend, it could
have a negative effect on how much you lose.
In one study, scientists found that when dieters ate what they wanted on the
weekends,
they undid all of their healthy progress during the week.
OK. To "undo" something means that you have worked very hard towards it, and you
no longer have it.
Yeah.
So something you put together or work hard for and then you just go off of it,
and ruin all of your hard work.
Yeah. If you undo something, you remove the effect of what you did in the past.
And of course, when you're trying to get healthier, that's not what you want to
do.
That's right. You don't want to do that.
You want to stay healthy.
Exactly, so.
Here we see instead of choosing a difficult diet that you need to "break" every
weekend,
find one that you can manage and stick to every day.
That's right. You want to stick to it.
To "stick to" something means you are committed to it, and you are going to do
it and you're not going to stop.
OK. So you want to keep going and don't give yourself a break just because it's
on the weekend.
That's why our rule... our helpful hint for number five is important.
Allow yourself just... to have those things you want 20 percent of the time.
Let that be a part of your diet.
And that will help you stick to it every day to be healthier.
Yeah. I think the best way to think of it, Kaylah, is you can allow yourself to
eat junk food 20 percent of the time every day,
not just healthy on the weekdays and unhealthy on the weekends.
That's not healthy.
That's right.
So stick to your diet.
Give yourself some linear room so you have something to indulge in every once in
a while.
OK. Friends, stay healthy, but don't try to get too skinny.
Now for now, let's visit the skit.
Why are you trying to go on a diet anyway?
You look great.
No, no, no.
My whole family has trouble with obesity.
That is in my genes.
Well, just because fat is in your genes doesn't mean you're destined to be fat.
Smart eating and exercise have much greater impact than your genes.
Hooray! I'm glad that's a myth.
Yeah.
Remember, your weight is up to you.
So, from now on I'll say no to all junk foods.
Uh, no exceptions! No, no, no.
But I'll miss it.
Well, that rule is a little too restrictive.
You're likely to break that rule in a big way.
So I can eat junk food?
Well, sometimes.
Eat well most of the time, but let yourself indulge from time to time too.
I'm glad that's a myth.
I love junk food.
You're not alone.
Well, let me tell you my favorite diet tip.
OK. What's that?
Splurge on the weekends. Woohoo!
Saturdays and Sundays I eat, eat, eat.
Uh, sorry. But that will undo all the healthy progress you make during the week.
So that's just another diet myth?
Instead of choosing a difficult diet, find one you can manage and stick to it
every day.
Well, thank you for the truth about diet myths.
You're welcome.
Remember, get the facts, or your diet may fail!
Again.
