Hi, everybody.
Welcome back from the break.
For many years, men's relationship with coral reefs has been lopsided.
Coral reefs protect us, make us healthy and promote our economies.
And yet we do very little for them in return.
Later on, check the bottom of pages 26 and 27 in your magazines for some ideas
on what you can do to help protect coral reefs.
Right now we're going to wrap up the reading on line 8.
Our Coral Reefs.
People can do a lot to save coral reefs.
Recycling garbage and saving water reduce the waste that goes into the oceans.
Traveling by bus or bike lowers air pollution, which may lead to global warming.
Picking up litter on the beach also keeps the water clean.
If everyone takes these steps, change is possible.
Healthy coral reefs mean a healthy ocean and a healthy Earth!
Right before the break we learned that you.. we as humans are causing a lot of
damage to coral reefs.
We said that by 2040, it's possible that, in fact, we can destroy one-third of
the coral reefs.
So what can we do to help, Ryan?
That's a good question.
What can you do?
Well, you can do a lot to save coral reefs either through recycling garbage and
saving water.
Those things both reduce the waste that goes into the ocean.
That's right. So there is a lot we can do.
Don't think that just because I don't live near coral reef, I don't even live
near the ocean, I can't do anything.
Well, you can.
Being aware of your environment and working to protect the environment will help
protect coral reefs.
That's right. We just saw two ways you can protect that environment.
One is recycling.
What is recycling?
"Recycling" is when we reuse something.
Instead of just throwing something away, we can reuse it.
That would be paper or plastic or metal or cardboard.
All of these things that we know how to recycle, we need to make sure we do
recycle those.
Yeah. Recycle your garbage.
Recycle your trash, things that you throw away.
Use them again.
And that way, they don't actually go down into the ocean.
They don't flow into the ocean.
As well as saving water can help reduce the waste that goes into the ocean.
Because when we have like sewer or what goes down the sink or out of the shower
when we're done, that gets wasted.
That's done.
So if you use less water, that's less waste that goes into the pipes, and then
eventually into the ocean.
OK. These are good plans.
What are some other ways, Kaylah, that we can help protect coral reefs?
OK. Well, just like we can protect our land environment, you can travel by bus
or bike which lowers air pollution, which may lead to global warming.
So we know that to protect all of our environments, our trees, all of the land
life as well,
we can protect the oceans by being... productive and useful in our way of
transporting ourseleves.
That's right. Yeah. If there are too many people driving cars everywhere, then
that can cause air pollution.
That makes the air very dirty, and that can lead to global warming.
And what is global warming?
Global warming refers to the very northern part and southern parts of the world,
they're made of mostly ice and very cold.
And as the "globe" - the globe means the entire Earth - as it begins to get
warmer from the pollution, those ice parts are starting to melt.
And that can cause some serious damage.
Right. It can cause the air to get warmer, maybe cause all of those ecosystems
to change.
And that can be causing coral reefs to die as well.
OK, friends, now we've seen that you can recycle, save water, travel by bus or
bicycle.
And now what else?
Well, picking up litter on the beach can also keep the waters clean.
This makes very much sense.
When you go and you're walking along the beach, and there is trash laying
around, pick it up.
Exactly. That's what "litter" is.
"Litter" is trash or garbage that is just lying all over the place,
things that people... maybe they ate something out of a container, and then they
just threw it on the ground.
Don't do that.
And if you see someone do that, pick it up for them.
Or encourage them to pick it up.
We need to make sure we're keeping our world clean.
And find a trash can.
Don't just throw it on the ground.
That's very gross.
Yeah. Encourage you to not do that and to keep those beaches clean because that
will end up in the ocean.
Now if everyone can take these steps, change is possible.
You can make a difference.
But it will take all of us working together.
So encourage your friends to join in helping save the environment as well
because by protecting our environment,
we're also protecting the coral reefs that very much need our help.
That's right.
I love seeing coral reefs, and I'm sure you do too.
And so we should all be working together to keep these coral reefs a healthy and
productive place.
Now a healthy coral reef means a healthy ocean, and therefore, a healthy Earth
because coral reefs are providing life for about 25 percent of the ocean's life.
And we do need the ocean to make our entire Earth, our entire globe healthy.
That's right. We've seen that we need coral; and now coral needs us. So protect
it.
Now that last sentence was our Grammar on the Go sentence.
So we're going to visit Liz, and then go to the Chat Room.
Hi there, friends.
My name is Liz.
And it's time for Grammar on the Go.
I'm in Australia today.
Now off the Northeast Coast of Australia is the Great Barrier Reef, the world's
largest coral reef.
Speaking of coral reef, that's what our article is all about today.
We read: Healthy coral reefs mean a healthy ocean and a healthy Earth!
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Now notice the word "mean." When we use it as a verb, we normally use it to talk
about a different way to say a word, like:
What does this word mean?
But in the case of today's sentence, "mean" is a way to show consequence or how
something will bring a certain result.
In other words, if we have healthy coral reefs, the result is we will have a
healthy ocean and a healthy Earth.
OK, let's have a look at some other example sentences.
Many business management experts often remind business owners the importance of
creating a positive work environment.
If employees feel they are respected and valued at work, then they are happier
and the quality of their work will most likely improve.
So we can say:
A positive work environment means happier workers and greater productivity.
Or let's say Martha always lets her children go out and play.
But if it's a rainy day, then she lets them play games in the house.
So we can say:
A rainy day means Martha's children will be playing games in the house.
Friends, if you'd like to see some more example sentences, then check out
today's Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine.
That's all the time we have for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go, signing off, in Australia.
Bye-bye.
(Music).
Morning, Bryan.
Morning, Ken.
Hey, what's with the mask?
Oh. I almost forgot.
You know, the pollution is really bad today.
So I decided to wear a mask.
The pollution?
Oh, you mean the air pollution, right?
Yeah. What other pollution is there?
Oh, there are different kinds of pollution.
Besides air pollution, there's also water pollution.
Oh, right, water pollution.
Also, Ken, let's not forget noise pollution.
Noise pollution? But noise isn't dirty.
No, it's not dirty.
But noise can disrupt our lives and affect our health.
So it can be regarded as a form of pollution.
Some sources of noise pollution include traffic, aircraft and industrial
machines.
I see.
What other kinds of pollution are there?
Well, there's also pollution of the soil.
You mean soil pollution?
Yes, although we usually call it soil contamination.
Soil contamination occurs when chemicals are spilled or leaked into the soil.
Oh, I see.
I'd never thought about how many kinds of pollution there are.
I learn so many things every time we talk.
Thanks, Bryan.
You're welcome.
(Chinese).
(Chinese).
And that's it for today.
I'll see you soon. Bye-bye.
Coral reefs are home to many different plants and animals.
Some scientists estimate over 1 million different kinds of marine life find
their food and protection in and around a coral reef.
Reefs aren't underwater rock formations.
They're living animals.
And they're fragile.
That's why if people don't take action to protect them, they will continue to
die out.
Friends, I hope all of you have a chance to see some real living coral for
yourselves this summer.
And as always, be safe, and have a great day.
