Hello, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to study English with us.
My name is Steve.
Well, it's an annual tradition here at the studio to introduce you to some of
the better Hollywood's summer movies you can expect to see in your local
theaters soon.
Yesterday, if you remember, the three movies we discussed all had one thing in
common: They were all threequels.
Today we kick off our lesson with an animated adventure film from the renowned
Disney/Pixar Studios called Brave.
Let's find out what it's about as we read together on page 13.
Summer at the Cinema.
Brave, the latest Disney/Pixar animated adventure, is set in ancient Scotland.
A young, impetuous princess and skilled archer named Merida refuses to follow an
ancient custom of her people.
The resulting chaos forces her to use her skills and discover true bravery
before it's too late.
In Jack The Giant Killer, a modern update of the fairy tale, a young farmer
named Jack leads an expedition into the land of giants.
He plans to rescue a kidnapped princess.
The film is sure to have some amazing special effects.
(Music).
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
My name is Ryan.
And we are back in our movie article now looking at summer movies.
Now yesterday we saw a lot of interesting movies.
We were looking at threequels that were coming out; so these were the third
movies in a series.
But now we're going to look at some more original movies.
That's right.
This is an original movie.
It's the first part.
Now this is... the first one we're looking at is also animated.
We learned that word yesterday.
It means to be drawn, to look like life or on a computer or characters.
Now these are drawn on a computer.
Exactly. And this is made by a very favorite, or a very... it's a studio that we
all like.
I know I love this studio.
It's one of my favorites, Pixar.
That's right.
Now Disney's Pixar is creating a new animated adventure called Brave.
Now it's set in ancient Scotland.
And you can see a picture of its main character, its lead character, on page 12
in your Studio Classroom magazine.
All right.
And in this movie, a young, impetuous princess and her skilled archer named
Merida refuses to follow an ancient custom of her people.
OK. Now she is "impetuous." That means she is most likely going to act very
quickly without thinking before she does.
No unfortunately, we can be very impetuous sometimes.
We don't think before we do something.
But this character... this is going to help the story be interesting because
it's part of who she is.
Yeah. That makes... gives her an interesting personality.
She does stuff without really thinking, and so she might get into a little bit
of trouble.
But it's going to make an interesting story.
Now she's also doing this with her archer.
Well, she is an archer, Ryan.
That's what's exciting is she is impetuous, which means she's going to act
quickly.
And she's an archer, which makes her a little dangerous because, what is an
archer?
All right. An "archer" is someone who has a bow and arrow.
And that's something you pull back, and you release the arrow when it shoots
through the air.
That's right.
So she is a talented archer, so she could be probably pretty dangerous.
Probably could be dangerous.
And in this story, there is going to be a lot of chaos.
And that forces her to use her skills and discover true bravery before it's too
late.
Now "chaos" is a state or being in total confusion.
There's no order.
So it's beyond just confused.
There's nothing that makes sense.
So maybe she can help solve that problem.
Yes. And I know this movie is made by Pixar.
I think we all have high hopes for it.
It should be a very interesting tale.
Well, the next movie we have is about Jack.
He... Jack the Giant Killer is a modern update of the fairy tale of a young
farmer named Jack who leads an expedition into the land of giants.
Now an "expedition" is a journey to find adventure.
That's right.
Now on this journey, he plans to rescue a kidnapped princess.
And this movie is sure to have some incredible special effects.
That's right. There'll be great social effects as this giant plant takes place
on the screen.
Well, that's our Grammar on the Go sentence.
So we're going to go visit Liz.
And then stay tuned for the trailers of Brave and Jack the Giant Killer, and
then the Chat Room.
Hello, friends.
How are you doing today?
My name is Liz, and it's time for Grammar on the Go.
We read in today's article:
The film is sure to have some amazing special effects.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Notice the phrase, is sure to + verb.
It's another way to say: certainly will + verb.
So today's sentence just means the film certainly will have some amazing special
effects.
We use this phrase, is sure to + verb, when we want to be very direct about how
something will happen.
And this phrase is often used in less formal situations.
For example, if Jill spent a lot of time preparing for her speech contest, and
you have no doubt that she will win, you can say:
With all the time she put into preparing for the speech contest, Jill is sure to
win!
Or if a co-worker brings stinky tofu to work, everyone in the office will smell
it.
And someone will complain. So you can say:
If someone brings stinky tofu to the office, my co-workers are sure to complain!
If you want to see some more example sentences, they're available in today's
Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine.
Keep up the good work.
We know that your English is sure to improve if you practice regularly.
That's it for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off.
Bye-bye.
I saw something that day... something I'll not forget.
It stands 12 feet tall with razer-sharp claws.
Its hide littered with the weapons of fallen warriors.
His face scarred with one dead eye.
I threw my sword and...
Chomp! Dad's leg was clean off.
Oh, that's my favorite part.
In accordance with our laws, the firstborn of each of the great leaders must
prove their worth.
Merida, stop!
A lady enjoys elegant persuits.
I present my only son.
He took out a whole armada single-handedly.
He would...
With one arm, he was stealing the ship.
I want my freedom.
But are you willing to pay the price your freedom will cost?
Careful what you wish for, my mother would say.
What's the worst that could happen?
No more fighting.
Show a little decorum!
Feast your eyes.
If you had the chance to change your fate, would you?
They're holly relics from a very special place far, far away.
They are born of dark magic.
They have the power to change the world as we know it.
Don't lose them! Whatever you do, don't get them wet.
Once darkness gets the taste for light, it will not stop.
What?
Where is the princess, Jack?
Something grabbed her.
Something big.
Run!
(Background Noise).
(Music).
Hi, Ken.
Good morning, Bryan.
It's raining so hard out.
I know. Did you get wet?
A little bit.
You know, I had to brave the storm because I'm due at work in five minutes.
Uh, you had to brave the storm?
I don't get it.
Oh. To "brave" something means to undergo or face something with courage.
So "brave" is used as a verb?
That's right.
You can brave a storm, brave the traffic, brave the streets of a tough
neighborhood, brave the elements.
The elements?
Now you really lost me.
Elements, plural, refers to the forces that make up the weather, like strong
winds, heavy rain or snow.
Those are the elements.
So can I say the elements are stopping traffic?
No, not really.
We rarely use "elements" this way nowadays except in the phrase, brave the
elements.
However, you can talk about someone being in his element.
And that refers to the situation which a person feels happiest or most
affective.
Hmm. Can you give me an example?
Sure, Ken.
I know you're in your element when you're studying English here in the library.
Because studying English is something that I enjoy?
Yep. But if you're in a situation that makes you very uncomfortable and unhappy,
then you're out of your element.
I'd be out of my element if you put me in a dance contest.
I see.
Well, I think you'd better go punch the clock, or else you're going to be out of
your element soon.
Oh, yeah, I'd better hurry.
