Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today.
My name is Steve.
Our Studio Classroom TRAVEL destination this month is to the beautiful northern
Japanese island of Hokkaido.
If you're already familiar with this place, then you'll know Hokkaido is famous
for its winters - beautiful and full of snowy fun.
Indeed, Hokkaido was the location of the 1972 Winter Olympics.
But seeing as this is June, we want to ask:
Are there any exciting things to do in Hokkaido during the summer?
Let's find out as we read together starting on page 18.
(Music).
Hokkaido.
Exciting experiences await you on Japan's beautiful northern island.
Every winter, skiers rush to Hokkaido, Japan's northern island, for wintry fun.
But summer in Hokkaido offers other kinds of adventures.
Daisetsuzan National Park.
Known as the "roof of Hokkaido," Daisetsuzan is home to some of the island's
largest mountains.
The park also includes Hokkaido's highest mountain.
The scenery makes it worth visiting at any time of the year.
Some types of the park's plants and animals only live in that area.
Take a guided hike through the park, leaving from the nearby city of Furano.
(Music).
Hello, everyone.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And we're back in my favorite article of the month, the TRAVEL article.
That's right. We love the TRAVEL articles.
And this month, we are traveling to Japan.
We are going to Japan.
More specifically, we're going to Hokkaido.
Now we're going to talk about the exciting experience that are awaiting you on
Japan's beautiful northern island.
That's right.
This is the island on the north of Japan, and there are all kinds of exciting
experiences there.
First, we're talking about what happens in the winter.
That's right.
Now most people know Hokkaido because every winter, skiers rush there because it
has so much wintry fun waiting.
There really is a lot to do in Hokkaido because of how far north and how much
snow there is in the winter.
OK. So we're talking about wintry fun.
Now Kaylah, I know you're from Colorado, what is wintry fun?
Well, wintry fun would mean different sports activities you do in the winter;
usually that means with snow.
So we see there are skiers that race there.
That means they go skiing on the mountains on the island.
And uh... so that's when you go down the side of a mountain on two small boards.
There's snowboarding; there's snowshoeing.
There's all kinds of fun in the winter.
OK. So that already sounds exciting.
But it is the summer time soon, so we're going to talk about what you can do in
the summer in Hokkaido.
You can find all kinds of other adventures.
That's right.
We said there's lots of wintry fun.
But since it is summer right now, we should talk about the summer fun that
Hokkaido has to offer.
That's right. And there are a lot of adventures you can find there in the
summer.
And an "adventure" is a very exciting activity.
It could be a journey that you take to go somewhere, or a very exciting
experience.
That's right.
An adventure would be something maybe unusual, something you don't do all the
time.
It can even possibly be dangerous.
But I do love going on adventures.
Last summer, one of my adventures was river tracing.
That's exciting, has a lot of... danger involved in it.
And I'm sure all of our friends have their own adventures they enjoy as well.
Yeah. In fact, I was on that adventure with you, I remember, river tracing.
If you haven't done it, you should try it.
But right now let's talk again about Hokkaido.
We're going to talk about the different things you can find there, starting with
Daisetsuzan National Park.
That's right.
Now known as the "roof of Hokkaido," Daisetsuzan is home of some of the island's
largest mountains.
So this is a national park, which we know, means it is protected by the
government as a place you can visit nature.
Yeah. And we just used the phrase "it is home to something." If you use that
phrase, that means that you can find those things there, so.
We know it is home to some of the island's largest mountains.
That means that is where you can find them.
That's right. Now we said the largest mountains are there.
That would mean they're probably the tallest moutains,
which would explain why it's called the "roof of Hokkaido" because that would be
the very top, the highest altitude that you can get to.
Right. So that makes sense; so you can find the largest mountains.
That means they're very big.
But that park also includes Hokkaido's highest mountain as well.
That's right. So it has lots in there, lots of mountains to see.
So the scenery makes it worth visiting really at any time of the year.
That's true. Yeah. There's a lot of wonderful scenery there, a lot of mountains.
I know you love mountains, and I like mountains too.
And we're talking about very beautiful scenery.
So let's define that word, scenery.
Well, "scenery" is the general appearance of the area.
So if you are looking out in Hokkaido, you would see all kinds of beautiful
mountains.
The picture that you're seeing is known as the scenery.
Right. The way something looks and it's usually very beautiful.
If you're talking about scenery, it's usually something that it looks very nice.
But there can also be bad scenery as well, right?
That's right.
Now I'm looking at page 18 and 19 in my magazine, and I can see all kinds of
beautiful scenery pictures.
You can see the different mountains and fields and waterfalls.
Those would all be scenery.
OK. So Daisetsuzan National Park sounds very beautiful.
You can see the pictures in your magazine.
It looks very beautiful.
But what can you find there?
Well, some types of the park's plants and animals only live in a certain area.
So you need to visit the specific part of the park to see it.
OK. Yeah. So you're... there are a lot of plants and animals that you can only
find in that national park.
That's the only place they live in the world.
So if you want to see these types of plants or if you want to see these types of
animals, you have to go to Daisetsuzan National Park.
That's right.
Now I do enjoy plants and animals, but Ryan, I would much rather go for the
adventure of the mountains.
So it seems that there's something for all kinds of people no matter what you're
looking for in the national park.
That's right.
Yeah, you can enjoy the beauty; or like Kaylah said, you can take a guided hike
through the park leaving from the nearby city of Furano.
That's right.
So if you want to go on a hike, you can definitely get out and enjoy the
scenery.
And as you're hiking, you can look around and look for those special plants and
animals.
And when you're on a guided hike, that means someone is leading it.
You're not just going by yourself.
That way they can show you the interesting things, and you won't get lost.
Yeah. And you... you're "taking a hike." That means you're walking through the
wilderness or going on a long walk.
And this really does sound like a great adventure.
That's right.
And you can leave right from a nearby city.
That means the city is very close to where the park's hiking trails begin.
Well, we're going to keep talking about Daisetsuzan Park.
But first, let's watch this video.
