Hello, friends.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today.
My name is Steve.
This month we are visiting the beautiful northern Japanese island of Hokkaido
where every season offers fantastic scenery and outdoor adventures.
But in our lesson this month, we're focusing on Hokkaido in the summertime.
Today we'll hike down off the roof of Hokkaido and head just west to the town of
Furano, famous for its festivals and fields of flowers.
Let's open our magazines now to page 18 and see what fun we can have in Furano.
(Music).
Hokkaido.
Furano Festivals and Workshops.
During the summer, lavender flowers fill the fields of central Hokkaido.
In July, the fields near Furano are also filled with Lavender Festival
celebrations.
These include children's shows, live music, fireworks displays and more.
All year long, you can express your creativity in one of Furano's workshops.
Learn to make sausage, bread and cheese, or create your own glass art, cloth or
pottery.
(Music).
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us right here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
And my name is Ryan.
We are back in day two of our TRAVEL article talking about the island in
northernmost Japan - Hokkaido.
That's right.
Yesterday we learned about Daisetsuzan National Park and all that you can do
there.
We saw they have got the highest and largest mountains, all kinds of special
nature that you can enjoy by hiking.
That's right.
They've got the gorge that you can hike from the top of the mountain down into.
And then relax in the hot springs where the hot water comes up out of the
ground. It sounds wonderful!
That's right.
It has beautiful scenery with crashing waterfalls and interesting rock
formations.
There's so much to see in Daisetsuzan National Park.
Now we learned that you can take a hiking trail, Ryan, from a nearby city.
What was that city called?
The city was Furano.
And so now we want to learn a little bit more about what you can do in that
city, so.
Let's take a look at the Furano Festivals and Workshops.
OK. Well, during the summer, lavender flowers fill the fields of central
Hokkaido.
So, "lavender," if... we need to know what a lavender is.
That is a beautiful flower with an incredibly, amazing smell.
It's so beautiful.
You can see a picture of it on page 18.
It's a purple/grey-typed flower.
Yeah. Lavenders are very pretty, but I like most how they smell.
They smell wonderful.
And so you can go here see these flowers and smell these flowers at this
festival.
And when they grow in the fields, they fill the fields.
It's... it's huge.
They are giant fields.
They're not small little gardens of flowers.
These just keep going and going for as far as you can see.
And as the wind blows through them, the smell would be so fragrant, would be
absolutely beautiful.
You know, Ryan, I have a friend who her favorite flower is lavender.
And she would absolutely love to do this.
Oh, yeah, I'm sure.
I can see why she would enjoy that flower.
This really would be amazing considering that says that here in central
Hokkaido, it is filled with these fields of lavender.
That means that there are so many flowers, they are everywhere.
That's right.
And they go through central Hokkaido.
So we've learned now that you have the national park that's very tall. It's got
the crashing waterfalls into the gorge.
But you can also spend your time in the fields around.
Now you can do this in July because the fields are so filled that they have a
festival.
That's right, the Lavender Festival.
And they have celebrations right here near Furano.
Now the word "celebrations," what does that mean?
Well, "celebrations" means some sort of party, an exciting adventure.
It's to celebrate or to rejoice or really, a party, right?
Yeah, a very happy event, or a lot of people gather around because of something
good,
and they want to "celebrate." That word means to enjoy each other's company.
Well, here they're celebrating the lavender filling these fields so they host a
lavender festival.
Now these celebrations would include children's shows and live music, firework
displays and much more.
OK. So this festival, it's a celebration, it's a party.
And we're enjoying a lot of children's shows, or shows for children as well as,
we saw, fireworks shows too.
What is that?
Oh. Fireworks are what we set off into the sky to celebrate.
They are bright... bright lights and loud noises and they're always at fun
celebrations.
All right, kind of like... explosion that paints the sky.
It's very beautiful.
Now all year long, you can express your creativity in one of Furano's workshops.
So we said the Lavender Festival is only in July.
But you can also experience Furano's workshops any time of the year.
OK. So we've talked about these festivals or celebrations like a happy event.
But now we're talking about workshops.
What exactly is a workshop?
Now a workshop is somewhere you can go or the event of attending some...
somewhere where you learn.
It's kind of like a classroom, except you learn by doing instead of by taking
notes and reading.
OK. So you can go to these workshops, or it's kind of like a fun class, a short
class.
And you can learn to make sausage, bread and cheese, or create your own glass
art, cloth or pottery.
So you can go to a food workshop to learn how to make sausage, bread and cheese.
Or you can go to an art workshop to make glass art.
Now that would be using glass to create interesting sculptures, make beautiful
things.
You can create cloth; or the last one you can do pottery.
That's right.
And "pottery" is anything that is made with clay with your hands.
So people can make "pots." That's where you get that section of the word in
pottery.
And you use clay and mold it with your hands in order to make that shape.
That's right.
You create it out of... out of soft clay.
And then you bake it in the oven, and it becomes hard, and we use it.
We use pottery for all different kinds of things.
And you could try your hand at making all of these.
Yeah, right. That's right.
Try your hand.
Do it yourself in these workshops.
Well, we're going to continue talking about the fun things you can do in
Hokkaido right after this video.
