Hi, friends.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today.
My name is Steve.
Well, you've heard the expression, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,"
right?
Well, for our lesson today, let's change that saying just a little bit to: Art
is in the eye of the beholder.
Now what I mean is what one person thinks is a beautiful piece of art, another
person might think, well, is just a piece of junk.
Today and tomorrow, let's look at some unusual pieces of art.
Are they creative expressions or pieces of trash?
You decide as we begin reading Unusual Art Forms on page 26.
Unusual Art Forms.
Art comes in all shapes and sizes.
When you consider art, what comes to mind?
It may not always be what you think.
Art can take almost any form you can imagine!
Check out these examples of art that are a little out of the ordinary.
Chopsticks.
Many, many disposable chopsticks are thrown away every year.
When Bryan Parks learned how many were being wasted, he decided to make a
change.
He wanted to make people more aware of recycling.
So he collected and cleaned used chopsticks.
(Music).
Hello, everyone.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And today we are talking about ART; but not just any kind of art, we are talking
about Unusual Art Forms.
That's right.
So what do you normally think of when you hear the word art?
Paintings, right?
Maybe drawings.
But this is unusual.
That means it's not normal.
It's not what you expect.
Now when we say "art forms," that means the way the art is created, or the style
of creating that art.
OK. So we're seeing how art can come in all shapes and sizes.
Many different types of art exist.
That's right.
Now usually, Ryan, you're right, we think art is paintings or drawings or
pictures or sculptures.
But here we're going to see that art really can come in all shapes and sizes,
meaning it can come any way.
However you choose to express yourself can be a form of art.
That's right.
We know that art might not always be what you think it could be.
You can consider it to be many different things.
So when you consider art, what comes to mind?
It may not always be what you think.
That's right.
So here, Kaylah, we use the word "consider." What does that word mean?
Consider means to think about.
So what do you... what do you expect?
Hmm, OK.
So art might not be what you expect it to be.
It can take almost any form you can imagine.
That's right.
It can take any form you can imagine.
Well, that's our Grammar on the Go sentence.
So let's visit Liz before we get started.
Hi, friends.
My name is Liz.
And it's time for Grammar on the Go.
I'm at the Louvre in Paris today.
And I'm certainly surrounded by all these amazing art works.
Speaking of art, we read in today's article: Art can take almost any form you
can imagine!
That's today's Grammar Tip sentence.
Our focus today is on the phrase, to take any form.
It just means "to be in any form." So another way to say today's sentence is:
Art can appear in almost any form you can imagine.
When you want to talk about how something could have many different kinds of
appearances, you can use this phrase "to take any form." For example,
con artists can play all kinds of tricks to get other people's money. So we can
say:
The tricks of con artists can take almost any form.
Or, counselors and mental health experts agree that there are different ways in
which love can be shown. So we can say:
Love can take almost any form.
So can you think of something that can be seen, done or presented in many
different ways?
How about learning English?
It can take almost any form.
But the key is to make sure you practice regularly.
And that's all the time we have for today.
Be sure to check out today's Grammar Tip section for more example sentences.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go, signing off, in Paris. Bye-bye.
OK. So art can take on many different shapes.
Why don't you check out these examples of art that are a little out of the
ordinary.
That's right.
We said they come in all forms.
So these... we're going to take you out of the ordinary.
They're special.
Right. If something is "out of the ordinary," like Kaylah said, it is special.
That could mean it is unusual.
It's not normal.
It's not what you expect to see.
It's not what you would consider when you first think of art.
Now our first form of art is... chopsticks?
Chopsticks?
OK, we usually use chopsticks to eat.
So let's find out how chopsticks can be used in art?
Well, many, many disposable chopsticks are thrown away every year.
Now we know that because whenever we eat out at a restaurant, and you are handed
wooden chopsticks in a little plastic bag.
Those are "disposable." That means you will throw them away later.
Right, exactly.
Kaylah, I use a lot of disposable chopsticks, almost every day when you go and
eat meals.
And so you get these, and you usually just throw them away when you're done
because they are disposable.
And like you said, that means you can throw it away when you're done using it.
That's right. "Disposable" means you probably use it only once and then get rid
of it.
You throw it in the trash.
It's not something that you would use over and over and over again.
Right. And so because of that, there are millions of chopsticks that are thrown
away every year.
Now when Bryan Parks learned how many were being wasted, he decided to make a
change.
So as you can imagine, throwing away all these plastic and wooden chopsticks is
not really good for the environment.
Right. So here the word "wasted" means you're not using something when it could
still be used.
And so Bryan here decided he wanted to make a change.
He wanted to change that.
That's right. "To make a change" means he wants to do something that will make a
difference, that will change the way we treat, well, disposable chopsticks.
OK. So in order to make a change, he wanted to make people more aware about
recycling, about reusing what people normally throw away.
That's right.
Recycling, we know we all need to be doing.
And we always encourage you here at Studio Classroom to be recycling, to be kind
to your environment.
Now he was very creative in his use of recycling.
OK. So how did he use recycling here?
He collected and cleaned used chopsticks.
That's right. So "to collect" means he went around and gathered them.
He kept them. He went and picked them out.
And so maybe he had friends that would instead of throwing their chopsticks away
that he would get them.
Or he'd visit restaurants and take their old chopsticks.
And then thankfully, he cleaned them.
Yeah, because you don't want to use dirty chopsticks for anything, really,
especially making art.
Well, really, you're right.
I would not want to use dirty chopsticks for anything at all.
That sounds gross.
Have all the food and leftover, spit from people... I don't think that sounds
nice.
Now Kaylah, we're going to find out how he uses these chopsticks to make art.
But first, I'm really impressed that he went through so much time and used so
much energy in order to create his art.
That's right.
Now usually we think: Oh. Art's easy. We just use what we have and keep going.
But he went out and sought and found something that could be reused and decided
to make something beautiful of something that could have been trash.
Right. It takes a lot of work to make this.
And so we'll find out how exactly he was able to use all of these used
chopsticks after we visit the Chat Room.
Hey, Ken.
You've been staring at the title of that book for a long time.
Is there anything wrong?
Yeah. I'm very confused about something.
This book is called The Collected Works of Edgar Allan Poe.
OK. That sounds right to me.
But Poe is a writer.
I thought that only artists like painters would create works.
No. Writers and musicians also create works or works of art.
They may be novels, poems or songs, but they're all considered works.
I see.
So in this case, "works" mean stories written by Poe?
Right.
Another thing to point out is that when we talk about an artist's works, plural,
we are usually talking about all the work produced by that artist.
Then this book must include all the stories Poe has ever written.
I'm sure it does.
Say, Bryan, what about the paintings that hang in art museums?
Can we call each painting a work?
Well, you could.
But it's more common to call each painting a piece of art, or a piece, as in:
The artist used bright colors in this piece.
So is there any difference between a work of art and a piece of art?
No, not really.
You could use either one to describe something created by an artist.
And you can also talk about "artwork," which is one word.
Could I call a painting an artwork?
No. Artwork refers to pieces of art that are included in a publication.
For example, you might talk about the artwork in a children's book or the
artwork in your favorite magazine.
I see.
So artwork can be either drawings or photographs.
Yes, that's right.
And it's used as a collective noun.
Well, thanks for all your work teaching me these points.
You bet.
