Welcome back.
Airplane travel is when you pay hundreds of dollars for the opportunity to be
crammed into a small space with hundreds of strangers for a couple of hours.
Can a little kindness and courtesy make an uncomfortable airplane trip more
pleasant?
You bet it can.
Let's pick up our reading with tip number three, Recline carefully, on line 14.
Airplane Manners.
Recline carefully.
Recline your seat very slowly in case the person behind you has their tray table
open.
And keep your seat upright during meal service.
Keep conversations short.
If the people next to you are trying to read, sleep or watch a movie, don't try
to talk to them.
Traveling with children.
If you are traveling with children, make sure they don't kick the seat in front
of them.
Take your turn when leaving the plane.
Allow the rows ahead of you to empty first.
Don't push your way to the front.
By practicing good behavior, everyone can have a more enjoyable trip.
I hope all of you at some point have the opportunity to fly, to travel by
airplane.
And if you do, you need to make sure you mind your manners that you are polite
to the people around you.
So far we've seen two tips.
One is to carry your bag in front of you so you don't hit the people already
seated as well as respecting your neighbor's space.
Don't put your elbows, your legs or your head in their space; and especially
don't sleep on their shoulder.
Yes, please do not do that.
OK. So now we are moving to our next tip, which is recline carefully.
Recline. To "recline" means to lay back, to lie back the upper part of your body
so the bottom part of your body won't move.
But if you're in a chair, the top part lays backwards.
That is to recline.
And your airplane chair can do this.
Yeah. Most airplane chairs have a button you push, and it makes the chair go
back usually just a little bit.
But we still call that reclining.
So recline carefully.
Move your seat very slowly in case the person behind you has their tray table
open.
That's right. Don't just hit the button and push back and fall into them.
Instead, go slowly because they can have their tray table open.
Now a "tray" is a flat object that it usually has the... raised the edges on it
to store things on, usually food.
Yeah. And sometimes you see people carrying trays in a school cafeteria.
But here this is a tray table, very common on airplanes.
It's shaped like a tray that you carry.
But it folds out of the seat.
Yes, that's right.
The seat in front of you has a latch that you turn, and the tray falls in front
of you.
So it's attached to your chair.
And if you move quickly, the person behind you will get it all in their face.
OK. Now we also see that when there is a meal service, you should keep your seat
upright.
And "upright" is the opposite of reclined.
Reclined is when it is leaning back.
And upright is when it is up.
Right, when it's up straight in vertical - we know is going up and down.
And so keep your seat up during meal service when you're eating meals.
That's right.
You'll hear this word upright whenever you fly because they remind you to put
your tray table back in its place and return your chair to its upright position.
That means to not recline anymore, to bring it straight up and down.
Exactly. OK. So what is our next tip, Kaylah?
Our next tip is to keep your conversations short.
Whoo... I like this one.
Sometimes when you're flying, you can sit next to someone who likes to talk a
lot.
That can sometimes be a problem for some of us.
So don't be that person.
If the people next to you are trying to read, sleep or watch a movie, don't try
to talk to them.
They're flying, they would like their space quiet.
They're enjoying a movie or sleeping or their book.
Don't... don't bother them.
Yeah. Some people don't want to be bothered when they're flying.
They just want to be alone, enjoy what they're reading or watching.
I can think of one exception that you're allowed to talk to them.
That's if you need to get up and go to the bathroom.
Don't just stand up and walk on them.
Ask them politely before you do.
Yes, that would be good. OK.
Our next tip is when you are traveling with children.
Whoo... if you are traveling with children, make sure they don't kick the seat
in front of them,
which goes back to our first tip and my first story of a child kicking the seat
in front of me.
It's so annoying.
Yeah. Please, please make sure they don't do this.
Make sure they don't kick other people's seats because that is so unpleasant for
the rest of us.
That's right. It's not very nice.
You need to be teaching your children as well as yourself these airplane
manners.
OK. Now also, take your turn when leaving the plane.
That's right.
Take your turn.
That means you need to wait for... to be your chance to go.
Allow the rows ahead of you to empty first.
That's right.
Don't just stand up as soon as the plane stops and try to push your way to the
very front.
That's rude.
I've had this experience as well.
When I was landing in an international flight, there was a group of ladies who
were very anxious and very excited to get off.
And they ran to the front and the rest of us got pushed; and it's very
uncomfortable.
You get shoved to the seats.
It's very rude.
So wait your turn.
Yeah, exactly.
Now these are all great tips for you to know.
When you fly, there are a lot of people around.
And so you want to practice good behavior so that all of those people can have a
more enjoyable trip.
And "enjoyable" is an experience that brings pleasure.
It's something you "enjoy." You see the word enjoy in there.
It's good; it's positive.
Flying can be fun.
Typically, I love to fly.
So let's make it fun for everyone.
Now let's go we enjoy the skit.
Attention, passengers.
Welcome aboard Flight 538.
In order to make our flight pleasant for everyone, let me remind you of some
airplane manners.
Excuse me...
Carry your bag in front of you as you walk to your seat.
Please do not hit those already seated.
Excuse me, sir.
Just a moment.
Please respect your neighbor's space.
Do not put your legs, head or elbows in your neighbor's space.
Sir, I'm sorry to bother you, but...
Not now. I'm making announcements.
Recline your seat slowly.
Keep your seat upright during meals.
Sir...
Shh.
If passengers are reading, sleeping, watching a movie or giving announcements,
please don't bother them.
And if you are traveling with children, please be sure they don't kick the seat
in front of them or others'.
Sir...
One final reminder.
As you exit the plane, please allow the rows ahead of you to empty first.
Don't push.
There! I was just reminding everyone about airplane manners.
Yes. But...
That away passengers can avoid behavior that upsets others.
Thank you.
But, uh, this is a private jet.
I'm the only passenger aboard.
Oh. Uh... well, then...
Attention, passengers on board Flight 538, you may do whatever you want.
Thank you.
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And time really flies.
Make sure you come back tomorrow.
Bye-bye.
So again, when walking down the airplane aisle, carry your bag in front of you.
2. Respect your neighbor's space.
3. When you put your seat back, do it carefully.
You might even want to look back at your neighbor and give them a quick warning.
4. Keep conversations short.
5. If you're traveling with children, make sure they mind their airplane manners
too.
And finally, 6, take your turn when leaving the plane.
OK, friends.
Go out, practice good airplane manners, and may your next flight be more
pleasant than the last.
I hope all of you have a great relaxing weekend.
Bye-bye.
