OK. Welcome back, everybody.
Yes, I admit it, this is a DO IT YOURSELF lesson.
Up until this point, we've learned that saving money is something anyone can do
with a little thought and planning.
However, there still might be some of you out there who need a little help from
others.
So let's find out how others can help us save money on line 14.
(Music).
Saving for a Rainy Day.
You can even have your bank automatically withdraw money from your account at
the beginning of each month and deposit it in an investment or savings account.
Step 3: Get help.
If you are struggling to save, you aren't alone.
There is an entire financial services industry that is geared toward helping
people like you save and invest money.
If you need help, ask for it.
Be careful about which advice you take, though.
Do some research and compare the alternatives available to you.
Better yet, do some reading or take a class to help you develop your financial
proficiency.
Following these steps probably won't make you rich - but it will help prepare
you to deal with life's surprises.
All right.
So we've seen what it means to pay yourself first.
That means that you plan how much money you're going to save at the beginning of
the month instead of waiting until you've spent your money on all kinds of
needless expenses.
That's right. You can pay yourself first.
Put the money aside at the beginning of the month instead of the end.
Well, there's even a simpler way of doing that.
That's right.
You can even have your bank automatically withdraw money from your account at
the beginning of each month.
That's right. That's a great idea is instead of having to go every month and
say,
"Well, put this in my savings account, or put this in my investment," your bank
can do it for you.
You can set it up automatically so you're saving without doing any extra effort.
Exactly. They are withdrawing it from your checking account and depositing it in
an investment or savings account.
So let's talk about the process of withdrawing and depositing.
Well, when you withdraw and deposit, when we're talking about a bank situation,
when you deposit, you put money into an account; when you withdraw, you take
money out of an account.
So when you get paid, your money is deposited into your checking.
And you can withdraw it out and deposit it to savings.
That's right. And it's great that so many banks have savings accounts just for
this purpose.
You can save money and your bank will help you take it out of your checking
account, the account that you normally use to pay for things,
and they can put it in your savings account, where it can stay for emergencies.
OK, Ryan, we've seen two tips.
We've seen to set your savings aside, diversify, make it different, save
according to what you're saving for.
And now we see to pay yourself first.
I like these tips.
I think they're both things that we could use in our daily lives rather easily.
These are not difficult.
Just like the beginning of the article said, it's really not as hard as you
think to save.
So what is step 3?
Well, step 3 is get help.
Hmm, get help.
OK. So maybe you need someone else to help you save.
Now if you are struggling to save, you are not alone.
That's true.
Now it's not... it's a little embarrassing to say I don't have any money saved
away.
I don't have anything.
But you're not alone.
You need to fix that.
You need to be prepared.
But you're not alone, so don't be embarrassed.
Don't be shy.
There is help.
Yeah. You're not alone.
You are not the only person who might be having trouble.
There are many, many other people who have trouble saving money.
Ryan, when we say you need to get help, earlier we talked about being
financially independent,
how can we both be using help as well as stay financially independent?
Hmm, that's a great question.
Now we'll see how to get help.
But remember, being financially independent doesn't just mean you are the only
one paying for things.
It means that you are also spending that money wisely.
So you need to learn how to spend money the proper way.
That's right.
You don't have to be just on your own.
Being independent financially doesn't mean that you're just making your own
decisions.
You can get advice.
Please do if you're having problems.
That's right.
Now there is an entire financial services industry that is geared towards
helping people like you save and invest money.
That's right. There's help out there.
There's an entire industry, there's an entire company,
there's an entire set of people out there who are trained and are there to help
you specifically save your money.
Right. Save your money and invest it.
Help you to learn when to keep your money safe and when to give your money away
to maybe make more in return.
Now that is our Grammar on the Go sentence, so let's go see Liz.
Hi, friends.
I hope you're all doing well today.
My name is Liz.
And it's time for Grammar on the Go.
Our article today is on saving money.
And according to our writer:
There is an entire financial services industry that is geared toward helping
people like you save and invest money.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Our focus is on the phrase, geared toward.
This phrase just means to focus on.
So today's sentence just means that there is an entire financial services
industry that is designed or equipped to help people like you save and invest
money.
We use this phrase when we want to talk about how a subject has a special
purpose to do something,
like, if you're attending a conference that is focusing on issues related to
teen drug abuse, we can say:
This is a conference geared toward teen drug abuse awareness.
Or we can use this phrase "geared toward" to talk about how a subject focuses on
a specific audience.
For example, Studio Classroom has a special program every Friday night, and it
is designed for junior high students and older.
So we can say: Studio Classroom's Friday Night Live program is geared toward
students who are thirteen or older.
If you want to see some more example sentences, they're available in today's
Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine.
That's it for today.
This is Liz with Garmmar on the Go signing off.
Bye-bye.
Thank you, Liz.
There is help.
If you need help, ask for it.
Be careful about which advice you take, though.
Do some research and compare the alternatives available to you.
OK. So look at some alternatives, some different options that you can use.
Now there's a better option too.
You... you need to do some reading or take a class to help you develop your
financial proficiency.
Now when we say "proficiency," we mean your skills and your experience.
So read, study, learn about how to be financially proficient.
Get those skills.
Don't just depend on somebody else.
Right. These are all ways that you can get help so that you can become more
financially independent.
Now follow these steps and it probably won't make you rich.
That's right. It probably won't make you rich following these steps.
It's not a "get-money-quick." But it will help you prepare to deal with life's
surprises.
Yes. And there are many surprises in life, so try to remember these three steps.
Now let's enjoy this skit.
So are you saving for a rainy day?
Well, I'm perpetually planning to save, but I never actually do.
Let me guess.
You decided to follow a budget and save the leftover money.
Yes. Your assumption is correct.
Unfortunately, at the end of the month, I rarely have any money left.
Step 2 is the simple solution.
Pay yourself first.
Pay me first?
Yes! Sock away your savings before dealing with other expenses.
Oh. That's not easy.
Have your bank automatically withdraw money from your account and deposit it in
your savings account.
But what if I'm still struggling to save?
You aren't alone.
Get help.
Where can I get help?
There are financial services geared toward helping you save and invest money.
So if you need help, ask for it.
But how do I know which advice to take?
Do research and compare the alternatives.
Oh, good idea.
Better yet, do some reading or take a class.
Develop your financial proficiency.
OK, I will.
I'll follow your steps and become rich, rich, rich!
Well, these steps probably won't make you rich.
Oh, no.
But, but, but, but, they can help you prepare for life's surprises.
Great! Well, thanks for these helpful steps.
Yeah... Oh, surprise!
You have extra bills this month.
Home repairs, garden supplies, vacation expenses.
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And your proficiency in English will improve if you keep listening to our
program.
I'll see you next time.
Bye-bye.
OK, friends.
Remember, to avoid spending too much of your hard-earned money on the next big
expense, try dividing your savings into different categories.
Also, to save money before dealing with your other expenses, you might consider
having your bank automatically withdraw it from your account.
Now asking a bank or another person to help you save money is OK, but it's even
better if you develop your own financial proficiency.
OK, don't forget to speak a little English today and develop your English
proficiency.
And then we'll see you next time. Bye-bye.
