Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us.
My name is Steve.
Well, the Hakka are a unique people with a special history.
In truth, they are part of the biggest ethnic group in Asia - the Han.
In practice, however, they have all the markings of an ethnic minority.
They have their own language, their own social customs, and even a particular
style of architecture.
At the heart of it all, though, is their cuisine.
And that will be the focus of our lesson today.
So let's open our magazines to page 14 and read about hearty, savory, delicious
Hakka food.
Hakka Food.
The heart of Hakka culture.
In recent years, Hakka culture has been experiencing a renewal.
Both the language and culture are now taught in schools and have developed a
strong presence in the media.
Moreover, Hakka art, festivals and architecture are all attracting increased
attention.
While all these elements make up Hakka culture, food stands out as a real,
concrete example of the Hakka spirit and tradition.
The Hakka's history of moving from place to place and of food shortages has
influenced their cuisine and culture.
(Music).
Hi, everyone.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And today we are talking about a specific culture.
Now it's a special culture that is experiencing some new things.
We're talking about Hakka.
That's right. We're looking at the Hakka culture, but not just all of their
culture.
We're looking at one specific part of their culture - their food.
That's right.
And we see it's the heart of Hakka culture.
Now when we say something as the "heart" of, that means it is at the very center
of it, kind of keeps it going.
It is a rhythm. It is something that is enjoyed.
So maybe food in Hakka culture is really the heart.
It's at the very center.
Yeah. It's at the center.
And so we're going to take a little bit of a look at Hakka culture and how it's
influencing um, the world today.
And then we'll see what the food has to do with Hakka culture.
That's right.
In recent years, Hakka culture has been experiencing a renewal.
So this means that at some point in time in the past, Hakka has been more pushed
to the side, maybe ignored a little bit.
But we see now the good news is today, it's experiencing a renewal.
Yeah. And a "renewal" means something is beginning to happen again, so.
Here basically, um, Hakka culture is coming back.
After all this time of a newer influence, everything is becoming more modern.
Now, though, people are interested in Hakka culture again.
It's coming back.
Yay! Great. A renewal is something to look forward to as it returns.
Well, both the language and the culture are now taught in schools and have
developed a strong presence in the media.
So these, Ryan, are two examples of how it is experiencing a renewal.
Yeah, it's coming back now.
It's being taught in schools, which I think is interesting.
You can learn the language, the Hakka language.
And also the culture is now having a strong presence in the media.
So let's talk about what it means to have a strong presence.
When you have a strong presence, that means you are noticeably there.
People know that you're there.
They recognize that you are there.
And Ryan, actually I have seen Hakka television here in Taipei.
So it... that's a strong presence in the media.
They have their own television channel.
Oh. That's pretty cool.
It's true. I've seen a little bit more of it.
And I tend to think more of things like um, Hakka art and like the traditional
clothes that they wear.
But I guess we're going to learn a little bit later about how the food is
actually at the heart of it.
But we see here, right now it's starting to come back.
And we see in art still, and festivals, architecture, those are all attracting
increased attention.
That's right.
There are festivals that are coming around that we get to experience some of the
art and the architecture.
"Architecture" is talking about the way they build things.
They way they build buildings.
So there's a specific way that the Hakka people have done things, and we're now
getting to experience that all over again.
Yeah. Those are getting increased attention; more people are paying attention to
it.
Now while all those elements make up Hakka culture, it's really the food that
stands out as a real, concrete example of the heart, the spirit of Hakka
tradition.
That's right. Now when we say the elements, we're just talking about all the
different parts of Hakka culture are very important,
but food stands out as being really concrete.
It's a very important part.
OK. First, I want to talk about the phrase "stands out." If something stands
out, that means it is very easy to see.
That's the first thing you notice.
And here food is the first thing you think about as being a concrete example of
Hakka tradition.
Let's talk about being concrete.
Well, when you mean... when you say "concrete," that means it is something that
is very clear, that is certain or very real.
So it is "concrete," meaning it is really there.
It is very important.
It is the center of, and it's not going anywhere.
That's right.
It's something you can actually see and feel.
And so we see here the Hakka's history of moving from place to place and of food
shortages has influenced their cuisine and culture.
So this is why food is at the heart.
That's right.
They have experienced a lot of moving around.
And we see "food shortages." Now when you say something is a shortage, that
means there is not enough of something.
So that would mean at some point in their history, over and over again, we've
seen that the Hakka people have not had all the food they need.
That's right.
And this has really influenced their "cuisine," which is talking about the way
you cook your food.
It's... it's really changed their food.
And so now when you look at their food, you can see their history, see their
culture.

I wonder why he keeps moving from table to table.
Maybe he's having trouble finding a comfortable seat.
I guess that's possible.
Hey, Bryan, can I ask you a quick grammar question?
Sure. Go ahead.
Why did you just say he moved "from table to table" rather than "from one table
to another table"?
Good question, Ken.
It would have been OK to say "from one table to another table." But that would
suggest that he only moved once.
If you leave out the words "one and another," it means that he moved more than
once.
So you were trying to make it clear that he moved many times.
Yes, that's right.
Does that mean that if someone keeps changing where they live, they are moving
from house to house?
Yes. You can use any noun with this construction.
You know, that reminds me of an article I read about a tribe that moved from
place to place rather than building a settlement.
Right. That means that they kept moving to new places.
And this isn't just true for physical things.
You can also talk about something happening from time to time.
But then you're not talking about moving from one time to another time, you're
talking about something happening once in a while, right?
Right. And similarly, "day to day" life refers to things that happen more or
less every day.
