Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today.
Well, today we continue our exploration of unique Asian ethnic cultures with a
look at a minority group from Indonesia called the Bugis.
Yes, the Bugis are comparatively small in number.
But their history and influence in the world is considerable, not just in and
around their native home in Southeast Asia,
but as I said, around other parts of the world as well.
So let's dive in then today to the reading on page 16, The Bugis People.
The Bugis People.
These Indonesian sailors have influenced cultures around the world.
One night, a black ship sails through the dark ocean near Indonesia.
The ship's crew wear black paint on their hands and faces and dark clothing.
The ship quietly slides next to a Dutch trading ship.
Then - the crew attacks!
This type of scene occurred frequently during the 19th century.
At that time, the Dutch ruled Indonesia.
But they could not stop the pirates from the local Bugis people group.
These pirates, desiring both independence and wealth, usually attacked without
warning.
Hello, everyone.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And today we're talking about a very special people group.
Now we don't often get to talk about PEOPLE GROUPS, but this one is exciting.
Yes, it is.
We are back looking at this people group called The Bugis People.
Now these are Indonesian sailors, and they have influenced cultures all around
the world.
That's right.
Now the Bugis people, so they are from Indonesia, we see.
And they are sailors.
That means they make their living on boats on the ocean.
But they've done even more than that in just Indonesia, they've gone beyond.
We see that they have influenced cultures all over the world.
Yes. And when you influence something, that means you have an effect on
something, you change something.
So they have changed many different cultures all over the world.
That's right.
They... really have!
I've actually heard of them before.
Let's get started.
We see... we start out with a story scenario in our article.
That's right. It starts out: One night, a black ship sails through the dark
ocean near Indonesia.
Now this sounds a little bit scary.
That's right, a black ship sailing through dark waters.
The ship's crew wear black paint on their hands and faces and dark clothing.
OK. Now we're talking about the crew on the ship.
And a "crew" is talking about the people or the group of people who work on a
ship, or... maybe even a plane.
Oh. That's right.
So they are the people working on the ship.
That would make them the Bugis people.
But we see specifically their ship is black,
and they are wearing dark paint on their faces and on their hands and arms to
hide themselves as well as they're wearing really dark clothing.
So you can imagine, Ryan, this dark ship with this dark crew coming through the
water.
Yeah. This all sounds a little bit creepy and not something I would want to see
late at night out on the ocean near Indonesia.
And so as this story is unfolding, or as it is happening, we're going to see
what comes up next.
Well, the ship quietly slides next to a Dutch trading ship.
That means it comes up behind the Dutch ship and is right next to it without
them realizing.
But then - the crew attacks!
OK. Wow! This sounds creepy.
The Dutch ship gets attacked by the Bugis people on their ship.
And so they didn't even know they were coming because the ship, it slid next to
them, or we saw it slides next to the Dutch ship.
That's right.
Well, this is not just a story.
This type of scene occurred frequently during the 19th century.
All right.
Something that happens frequently happens very often.
And so back in the 19th century, at that time, the Dutch ruled Indonesia.
That's right.
So the Dutch had a trading company there called the East Indies Dutch Trading
Company.
And they were living there, selling goods.
But they had to use ships.
That's how they got all of their goods back and forth from Europe.
Well, the Dutch were ruling, but not everybody liked that.
That's right.
The Dutch couldn't stop pirates from the local Bugis people group.
Now Kaylah, let's explain a little bit here.
What is a pirate?
Well, a "pirate" is someone who steals.
So um, most often we think of them on a boat - so a person who is on a ship that
attacks another ship or a town.
Now the most famous pirate I can think of... there's a couple: There's
Blackbeard, there's Captain Hook.
And now with Pirates of the Caribbean, we have Captain Jack Sparrow.
That's right. And actually we have talked about Captain Blackbeard before in an
earlier article.
So now we're looking at the Bugis people, who, some of them were also pirates,
and they desired both independence and wealth.
And they ended up attacking these Dutch ships.
OK. So the Dutch are ruling Indonesia, but the Bugis people don't like that.
They are a local group.
They are a local people group.
This is their home.
And the foreigners from Europe have come in and tried to settle them.
Well, they don't agree with them.
They don't like them there, so they begin attacking so they can have
independence, freedom and wealth.
Right. So they are attacking these ships, trying to gain or get that
independence,
which means they want to have their own control over their lives, and they got
wealth.
And when they attacked the Dutch ships, they attacked without warning.
They didn't see it coming.
Well, join us after the break.
For right now, let's visit the Chat Room.
Oh, no. I'm sorry to hear that.
OK.
Well, I need to go now, but I'll come over when I get off work tonight.
OK. Bye now.
Hey, Bryan, what's going on?
You look worried.
That was my cousin Karen.
She's really upset.
Her son just got kicked out of college for failing too many classes.
Oh, no.
Did she know he was having trouble?
She hadn't seen his grades, but she thought he was doing OK.
This really caught her off guard.
That must be a nasty surprise.
Hey, what do you mean that it caught her off guard?
I've never heard that expression.
Oh, that's a good idiom to know, Ken.
Let's have Studio Classroom's Editor-in-Chief Doris explain what it means.
OK.
When a situation catches a person off guard, it means that person does not
expect it to happen and is not prepared to deal with it.
Originally, when a person was off guard, it meant that they were not ready to
defend or guard against someone who was attacking them.
But today, this idiom can describe any bad situation that comes as a surprise.
So you were saying that Karen wasn't expecting her son to fail?
That's right.
It happened completely out of the blue.
Out of the blue?
What does that mean?
It's another idiom used to describe something that people do not expect.
So "out of the blue" means the same as "without warning"?
That's right.
They both mean that people weren't ready for what happened.
But "without warning" usually talks about something bad, while "out of the blue"
can be used for good things or bad things.
Well, I'm sorry to hear about Karen's son.
I'm glad you're going to talk to them.
Yes. I'll try to help them figure things out tonight after I get off work.
