My name is Steve.
Each month Studio Classroom's PROFILE feature introduces you to a person you may
not know about but whose life is nonetheless extraordinary or inspiring.
This month, that person is Logan Lerman.
Lerman is an actor, but he loves all aspects of filmmaking, from writing and
shooting to directing and producing.
Indeed, Lerman would admit that most, if not all, of his decisions he's made so
far in his young life were made to get him closer to doing these things that he
loves so much.
Why don't we open our magazines now and meet Logan Lerman on page 20.

A love for movies guides this rising star.
The desire to become rich and famous motivates some actors.
But young star Logan Lerman is driven by a love of acting itself.
Like many children, Lerman enjoyed movies from a young age.
But he took that interest further than most.
Lerman was less than 3 years old when a Jackie Chan movie inspired him to become
an actor.
Most children that age only dream of acting in the distant future.
But living near Hollywood made Lerman's dream realistic.
Lerman's parents helped him find an agent, audition for and act in two
commercials, all by the age of 4.

Thank you so much for joining us here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
And my name is Ryan.
And we often like to talk about famous people in our PROFILE articles.
Uh, most of them are famous for certain reasons.
Some of them are singers; many are artists.
But of course, most of them are actors.
And that's the case for today.
That's right. We're talking about a young actor named Logan Lerman.
Now he's... he's not very young... not very old, but he's done a lot.
And he's doing a really great job.
So we thought, here at Studio Classroom, we could take some time to look at his
profile.
Yeah. We're going to see a little bit of his early experience, his breakaway
from acting experience, and now how he's getting back into acting again.
We see: A love for movies guides this rising star.
Now we often say "rising stars." We do know what that means - that he's
coming... he's becoming more popular and more famous.
But we don't often see that it's a love of movies, not desire to be famous or
luck or the desire for money.
But really, he just loves movies.
And that's what drives him to this.
I think that's a wonderful drive.
And we're going to see another word used to describe that word "drive." We see
the desire to become rich and famous motivates some actors.
OK. So we've talked about how he's driven by the desire to be in movies, he
likes movies, but he's also motivated by that desire.
What does that mean?
When you are "motivated," it is... it's when you make some... something or
someone want to do well or to behave in a certain way.
So if you are motivated to get a good grade on your test, you work hard to
complete that.
You can be motivated to get into a certain school.
You can be motivated to make sure you find a certain person that he is motivated
to do well in movies, not because he just wants to be famous.
Yeah. That's a great point.
And the word "driven" really means the same thing.
That's what he wants to do.
And of course, we're talking about Logan Lerman right now.
But most famous actors, well, they're driven or they are motivated by money and
the desire to be famous.
But of course, that's different with Logan, isn't it?
Well, he is driven by a love of acting itself.
Now Ryan, I think this is really special.
You know, we often see people who are doing well in the industry and acting
because they want to be famous or they just enjoy being on the screen.
But he actually loves acting.
And that's really special.
You don't see that very often.
Yeah. I think that's great.
He actually... he started really young.
And most actors who started acting at a young age, well, they didn't really know
what they were doing when... when they were that little.
But as they get older, they just do it for the money.
But with him, he loves acting.
He finds a lot of joy in it.
And so that is what motivates him.
That's what makes him want to keep going.
Like many children, Lerman enjoyed movies from a young age.
Now that's true, most of us enjoy... I know I enjoyed watching movies as a kid.
It's something we all enjoy to do.
But... none of us really did what he has done with that.
That's right.
He took that interest further than most.
Now we'll explain a little bit more about that.

That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Notice the phrase "to take that interest further." That just means to take the
interest and develop it more.
Whenever you take a subject further, it means you either make the subject
bigger, or you go deeper with the subject.
For example, let's suppose you're in a meeting.
And although you wish the discussion can continue, you're running out of time,
so you can say:
Although I would love to take this discussion further, we are, unfortunately,
running out of time.
Or let's suppose Dillon has been dating Betty and would like their relationship
to be more serious.
So we can say:
Dillon would like to take his relationship with Betty further.
So next time when you want to talk about how you'd like to go deeper or bigger
with a subject, give this phrase a try.

Jackie Chan is a very famous movie actor.
He usually does kung fu movies.
I think he's from Hong Kong.
Yeah. Well, he's very famous, and his movies are very fun to watch.
And I imagine... I was not a 3-year-old boy, you were 3 years old once.
It would be exciting to see that kind of adventure and that kind of fighting and
just how cool it would be.
And it'll make you want to act as well.
Yeah. Jackie Chan is... I love him as an actor.
He's a lot of fun.
He's funny, and he's also very talented.
Now at the age of 3, that's pretty young.
Most children that age only dream of acting maybe in the distant future.
When we say "distant future," that means a long time from now.
But living near Hollywood made Lerman's dream realistic.
So he lived in California, not too far from Hollywood.
Yeah, not too far from where I grew up too, so maybe I should have become an
actor.
But they... this made his dreams realistic.
Something that is "realistic" means it seems real.
It seems like it could happen or could exist.
That's right.
It seems like he might be able to actually do that.
His dreams might get to come true.
Well, Lerman's parents helped them find an agent, audition for an act in two
commercials, all by the age of four.
So in one year, he went from being 3 enjoying movies to being 4 and acting in
commercials.
That's some good parent work.
That's wonderful.
He got an agent, which is someone who helps you become more successful in your
career.

Most kids dream of becoming an actor in the distant future, but not Logan.

Lots of kids are in commercials.

And in another great movie too.
But then Logan Lerman stopped acting.

He wanted a more relaxing, normal life.

A new interest in film production drew him back into the movie business.

Yeah. He's appeared in many movies, dramas, thrillers and comedies.
