Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us.
My name is Steve.
This month's PROFILE spotlight is on the young and talented Logan Lerman.
As a young boy, Lerman describes himself as a quiet "film geek" who liked to
stay home - I'm guessing to watch lots of movies.
Lerman says he started acting just for fun and because it was a way to get out
of school.
Well, all those years of cultivating a passion for movies and avoiding school
work has paid off because today Lerman is a Hollywood star.
Let's find out about what Lerman has been up to recently in today's reading
starting on page 21.
Logan Lerman.
In 2010, when he was 16, Lerman took on a demanding role, starring in Percy
Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.
He played a present-day boy who discovers that he is a descendant of a character
from a Greek myth.
His next film The Three Musketeers was based on the classic novel of the same
name.
Lerman played D'Artagnon, a youthful adventure-seeker who finds the action he is
looking for.
(Music).
Hello, everyone.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And we're back looking at Logan Lerman, a very talented young actor who also is
interested in movie production.
Yeah. We've seen how he got his start in movies at a very young age.
And then he decided he wanted a normal, relaxing life in school like most
children.
And then he ended up getting back into the acting business due to his interest
in film production and how movies are made.
Now in our Studio Classroom magazines, we can see pictures of Logan on pages 20
and 21.
And we can see that he is still very young.
And even at a young age, he has been into the movie industry, got out of the
movie industry, and is making his way back into the movie industry.
Exactly. So now since he got back into the industry, he's been in dramas,
thrillers, many different types of movies.
Now we're going to talk about a couple of those.
In 2010, when he was 16, Lerman took a demanding role starring in Percy Jackson
& The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.
OK. That was a long sentence.
Let's take it back to the beginning.
So in 2010 he was 16, and he took a demanding role as a star in this movie.
So we know "starring," he is starring in this movie.
That means he is the main character, the one we are watching the story about.
What does it mean to have a demanding role?
Well, the role in a movie is the character that you play.
So he is playing a certain character or he is supposed to be acting as somebody,
but that role is demanding.
What does that word mean?
"Demanding" means it takes a lot of time and attention to do well.
So he is putting a lot of focus, a lot of time into this character in this movie
called Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, which is based off of
a book.
And if you have not had the chance to see it, definitely look this movie up.
It is very fun.
Yeah, it looks very interesting.
I haven't seen all of it, but from what I did see, it looks pretty good.
Now I could tell his role was demanding.
And of course, that also means it's... it takes a lot of strength because it is
difficult to play, so.
He played a present-day boy who discovers that he is a descendant of a character
from Greek myth.
Now first, let's talk about what a descendant is.
OK. When you are a descendant, that means you are related to someone that has
come before you.
So I am a descendant of my grandparents.
Yeah. That's a great example.
Now we're also looking at uh... this is... he's a descendant of a um... a God or
a character from a Greek myth.
And a "myth" is referring to stories, right, that you tell from a long time ago.
Stories got kind of explain the history of a place, but people don't really
think they're true.
That's right.
Now myths are used back in old times to try to describe or explain why something
happened or how it happened by making up things that seem like they could be
true,
but they're not necessarily.
And Greek myths are very famous, very popular all throughout stories across
Western culture.
Yeah. Now something important to remember is that myths are usually old.
They come from a long time ago, and so we usually know they're not true now.
But in this movie, he is playing a present-day boy.
So he's playing someone in the current time, right now, the modern world, who is
the descendant of someone from Greek myth from a long time ago.
That's right.
And actually, this is a very good book to read too.
If you'd be interested in challenging yourself to read maybe a little higher
level English, this is a fun book and very exciting to read.
Cool! I look forward to it.
Maybe I'll read it.
So his next film now is The Three Musketeers.
The Three Musketeers is also based on a classic novel that comes from the... the
novel by the same name, The Three Musketeers.
Now this is a... novel originally written in French, but it tells a story of a
very exciting character.
Yes, it does.
Now we see the name of the movie here is "musketeer." There are three
musketeers.
And a "musketeer" is basically a soldier.
And they use a certain type of weapon called a musket, and so they are called a
musketeer.
Now the story of the Musketeers has been told a lot, but he got to play one of
the lead characters in the most recent movie.
Lerman played D'Artagnon, a youthful adventure- seeking... seeker who finds the
action that he is looking for.
All right. So he's playing a very important role in this movie.
He's playing D'Artagnon, a youthful adventure-seeker.
So let's talk about the word "youthful" here.
When you are "youthful," that means you have the qualities that are very typical
of being young.
So you have a lot of energy, you're very excited.
You dream really big.
You... you're ready to go.
So he's youthful, he is young in it.
And actually, Ryan, this character, D'Artagnon, is trying to become a musketeer.
And a musketeer, as you said, is a soldier, but was a very respected class or
section of soldiers in the French military.
Yeah, that's right.
So he's... he's trying to become this soldier, he is youthful, he has a lot of
energy, and we also see he's an adventure-seeker.
So maybe we know why he's trying to become a musketeer.
If you're an adventure-seeker, that means you are seeking, or looking for, a lot
of adventure.
That's right.
Well, it's time for us to go to a break.
But before we do, please visit the Chat Room.
Oh, I can't believe this.
Bryan, what's going on?
Are you upset about something?
I spent all morning helping one person.
He was rude and demanding.
But he only used 2 of the 10 books I found for him.
And then he wrote my boss an e-mail saying I wasn't helpful enough.
What? That's ridiculous!
I know you work really hard to help the library patrons even when that means a
lot of extra work for you.
Yes. Try and answer people's questions while keeping the books organized
correctly can be a really demanding job.
But I'm sure your boss knows that.
And she won't let this guy's e-mail change her opinion of you.
Thanks, Ken.
I hope you're right.
Hey, can I ask you a quick question?
You just said this guy was demanding, and then you said that your job was
demanding.
Does "demanding" mean the same thing in both of those cases?
Pretty much.
Something is demanding if it makes a lot of demands or requires a lot of effort.
And those things can be true of either a person or a job.
OK, got it.
You know, this reminds me of another question I had.
Should I say that something is in demand or on demand?
Ah, that depends on what you mean.
Let's have Studio Classroom's founder Doris explain the difference between these
two terms.
OK.
When something is "in demand," it means that it is popular and that many people
want it.
For example, when a new iPhone comes out, it is usually in demand.
By contrast, when something is available "on demand," that something or service
is available whenever someone needs or asks for it.
OK. Well, in that case, I'd like to thank you for being willing to help me with
English on demand.
You're welcome, Ken.
And I'd like to thank you for encouraging me when I have a bad day.
Hey, it's the least I can do.
