OK, I hope you had a good break.
Welcome back.
Don't ever expect Logan Lerman to tackle the same challenge twice.
He says, ("quote") I'm always looking for something that's going to be
challenging and make me nervous every time I start a project.
And I'm guessing that's why Lerman has such a variety of interests.
OK. Let's talk about those as we wrap up the lesson on line 12.
(Music).
Logan Lerman.
Lerman also stars in this year's The Perks of Being a Wallflower, another movie
based on a beloved novel.
His character, a shy, first-year high school student, learns about life from
some older friends.
Lerman considers acting his hobby - something he would do for fun even without
pay.
But he also loves music and can play piano, drums and several types of guitars.
He aspires to be a director and sees directors as the artists behind great
movies.
Logan Lerman will surely contribute to this art for years to come whether
through acting, directing or both.
All right. So we've seen how Logan Lerman has gotten back into acting now.
And we've taken a look at a couple of different films he's been in recently:
Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief as well as The Three
Musketeers.
So what is he doing now?
Well, Lerman also stars in this year's The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Now it's another movie based on a beloved novel.
Now it's amazing that he keeps doing these movies based off of literature, based
off of books.
I think that's great.
It shows that he actually is probably very smart.
Yeah, I guess so.
I think a lot of good movies are based off of books.
A lot of authors have very good ideas, and they tend to make good movies, so.
Uh, this is a great example.
It's called Perks of Being a Wallflower.
There are a couple of words there.
Let's first look at the word: perks.
OK. Well, the "perks" of something.
The "perks" mean it is something that gives you an advantage or gives you extra
something.
So if you take the example of being a member of a gym, if you buy a membership,
you have the perks of using all of the equipment all the time.
If you just buy a pass to go every once in a while, you don't have the perks of
using it whenever you want.
Exactly. So that's a great example of perks.
Um, but this is perks of becoming a wallflower... or being a wallflower.
And a "wallflower" is... it could be referring to a type of flower, but usually
it's talking about a personality.
It's talking about a shy person, someone who is very afraid and very quiet.
And they usually don't talk very much.
That's right.
And it actually usually refers to a girl because girls are thought to be
flowers.
Now if you want a mental picture of what this would look like - if you are at a
social event, maybe at a birthday party or at a dance,
if there is a girl who is standing against the wall not talking to anybody, not
participating, she would be considered a wallflower.
Yeah. They say that because kind of like wallpaper, which is the pattern on a
wall, sometimes they just blend in.
You don't really know who they are because they're so quiet and so shy.
And usually most people would think that's not a very good thing.
But here we're talking about the perks of being a wallflower.
That's what this novel and the movie is about that the novel or... the movie is
based on that novel.
That's right.
Now I've not read this novel, but it said that it is a beloved or beloved novel.
Now what does it mean to be beloved?
OK. If you are "beloved" or beloved, that means you are loved very much.
That's right.
Now and it's a love that usually doesn't die out.
It's usually an older word that we use, but it's a great word to use to express
big affection, to express a lot of love.
It refers to the person or to the thing that is loved.
So you could say someone is your beloved, or it is an adjective describing
something you do love.
Yeah. So this is a novel many people enjoy, many people love.
And his character in this movie - and as it was in the novel or in the book - is
a shy, first-year high school student.
So in this case, wallflower is not referring necessarily to a girl but to his
character.
That's right. His character, because it's him playing it, would therefore be a
guy.
So this is going to be an interesting twist on a wallflower.
That's right.
Now... we see that his character learns about life from some older friends.
So we're going to get a little bit of an idea of what actually happens in the
story.
And he learns a lot in it, it seems.
That's right. So this wallflower character is going to grow.
And I will just have to wait to see this movie to see exactly what that means as
he learns from other characters.
But you can see a picture, a still, from that movie in your Studio Classroom
magazine.
That's right. OK, so.
We go on to see that Lerman considers acting his hobby.
Of course, we know that it... that it is his job, but he also considers, or
thinks of, acting as his hobby.
Now it goes on to say that "something he would do for fun even without pay."
That's what he considers it a hobby.
We do it to entertain ourselves because we enjoy doing it, not because it gets
us money.
And that's how he views acting, which is actually very rare.
That is very rare.
Most actors they just want a lot of money, and they always ask for a lot of
money.
I don't know how much he gets paid in these films, but I get the idea that he
really doesn't worry about that too much.
But he also loves music and can play the piano, drums and several types of
guitar.
So we see that his hobbies don't stop with acting.
In fact, he's quite musical.
He is quite talented.
Yes, you're right.
He aspires to be a director and sees directors as the artists behind great
movies.
That's right.
When you "aspire" to something, that means you have a strong hope, a want, a
desire to do something.
So if you aspire to become a great athlete, you spend time working out and you
get a lot of sleep at night so your body can grow.
You can aspire to do big, great things.
And he aspires to be a director.
Yeah. I think that's great.
Kaylah, you have a little bit of experience directing, at least for theater.
So I think you can understand how directors really are very important and
they're the real artists behind it.
But here we see that Logan Lerman will surely contribute to this art for years
to come whether through acting, directing or both.
Well, I'm excited to see where he goes and to see where his career goes and how
he contributes to the movie industry, the art of performing.
