OK. Welcome back, everybody.
When you go to the Dalmatian Coast, you can live in utter luxury just like the
Roman Emperor Diocletian did so many centuries ago.
Or if you're not the kind who likes the pampered treatment, there's the more
personal and welcoming approach.
Let's read about that on line 6.
(Music).
Croatia's Dalmatian Coast.
If you want something more welcoming, choose a bed and breakfast.
Do you need something affordable?
Try a private room or apartment.
You can rent these from the house owners, who add a personal touch to your stay.
It's an easy way to experience the warm and friendly side of Dalmatia.
When it comes to beautiful vacations, Europe is the perfect choice.
For your next trip overseas, why not try Croatia's Dalmatia?
(Music).
So does your family like to travel in luxury like Ryan's family does?
Well, maybe you can travel to these nice spa resorts.
But if you want something more welcoming, choose a bed and breakfast.
That's probably more of my speed.
That's what I would like to do.
Bed and breakfast.
Now "bed and breakfast" is referring to usually a smaller place.
Oftentimes it can even be a home where people open it up to you for you to spend
the night and then they cook you breakfast.
That's right.
We've talked about bed and breakfast a couple of times, so hopefully you
remember that term.
We also refer to them as a "B&B," so, if that helps you remember that vocabulary
word.
Well, would you like to stay in luxury or would you like to stay in a bed and
breakfast?
Yeah. Do you need something that's more "affordable"? Now what does that word
refer to?
"Affordable" means something that is not expensive.
It does not cost a lot of money.
If you are traveling and do not want to spend a lot of money for the luxury, try
a private room or apartment.
OK. Now this actually sounds like a lot of fun to me.
Even though my family, well, they usually like the more expensive, luxurious
places,
I actually think I would like to stay in an apartment that you can rent.
Maybe you can rent from homeowners who... which would add a personal touch to
your stay.
That's right. So you can rent.
And when you "rent" something, that means you use it for a short amount of
time... for a fixed amount of time at a fixed paying rate.
So if you're renting an apartment, you can tell them: I will be here two weeks.
And they will tell you how much you pay the owner because you're not buying it,
but you're using it, and you're paying to use it.
Right. Now we're talking about house owners or homeowners.
And those are people who have purchased or bought the home or the apartment.
And then they are the ones who let you rent it from them; so you give them some
money to use it.
That's right.
And this adds a personal touch to your stay, makes it a little more homelike, a
little more personalized to your visit.
Well, that's our Grammar on the Go sentence, so let's visit Liz.
Greetings from Croatia, friends.
My name is Liz.
And it's time for Grammar on the Go.
Our article today is all about Dalmatia, places to see, things to do and places
to stay, including apartments and rooms that you can rent from the owners.
According to the writer:
They add a personal touch to your stay.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Notice the phrase, personal touch.
We normally use "touch" to mean putting your hand or finger on something, like:
Don't touch that. It's hot.
But in the case of today's sentence, "touch" has a completely different meaning.
What we see here is a noun that means a small detail that improves something.
So today's sentence just means:
Staying in an apartment or room can make your trip feel more personal.
Use "touch" whenever you want to talk about how a small detail is added in order
to improve or complete something.
For example, let's suppose you're at a family dinner, and grandma made her
famous chocolate cake for dessert. So you can say:
Grandma's chocolate cake was the perfect finishing touch to the family dinner.
Or let's suppose your classmates are decorating the classroom for a class party,
and they had taped several balloons to the chairs.
So we can say:
The balloons on the chairs add a festive touch to the classroom.
If you want to see some more example sentences, they're available in today's
Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine.
That's it for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go, signing off, in Croatia. Bye-bye.
All right.
So this is a great chance for you to rent an apartment and really get a more
personal touch out of your visit to Dalmatia.
Well, it's an easy way to experience the warm and friendly side of Dalmatia, so.
You know what, if you want something affordable, you want something
personalized,
something that's connecting to the culture and to the people, this is a great
and warm way to do that.
Yeah. And we're using the word "warm" here to express how comfortable it would
be.
You can really sense that these people do want to take care of you.
And I think that makes it sound like a more fun vacation.
Absolutely.
I think everything about this so far has just been so interesting.
There's so much to do.
There's history from a long and complicated past.
There's diving; there's water sports.
There's all different places to visit, folklore, stories, dancing, music... This
place sounds incredible.
It does, yeah.
You can enjoy so many different things on your own but also with the people
there.
You can see some of them perform in shows wearing traditional clothes.
And now you can also get even more personal, or even more close to them if you
maybe stay at someone's home, let them cook you breakfast.
That's right.
And I like the way that this article gets us interested in going,
and then gives us places to stay for all different budgets no matter how much
money you have to spend or not.
Yes.
Now when it comes to beautiful vacations, Europe is the perfect choice.
Now often when we think about visiting Europe, we think about maybe London, or
Paris, or maybe visiting Spain, or... all uh, Italy,
all these different places we think as the most popular.
But Ryan, I have learned my lesson that there is so much to do in Europe.
That's true.
Actually, I was thinking when I wanted to go back to Europe, I wanted to go to
London.
But you know, London's a very big city.
It doesn't sound as nice, as beautiful as Croatia.
And there's still a lot to do there.
Well, maybe for your next trip overseas, why not try Croatia's Dalmatia?
Now I think that's a great question.
Why don't you write to us at letters@StudioClassroom.com or on our Facebook and
tell us:
Would you choose Croatia's Dalmatian coastline for a vacation? Why or why not?
Yeah. Let us know if this sounds like the kind of place that you would like to
go visit.
Maybe try the water sports or learn a little bit more about the history and get
a little more personal with the people there.
Well, I'm ready to go.
So I think I'll take the tips from a couple of days ago, and get my friends
together, get my camera ready.
Maybe learn a couple of Croatian phrases and head on over.
Yeah. Let's try something new.
I just might join you.
It sounds like fun.
I think this sounds like a great vacation, something completely relaxing,
and a wonderful place that offers something for everyone no matter what your
vacation taste is.
Well, thank you so much for joining us.
Let's go visit Ken in the Chat Room.
Hi, Ken.
Hey, Bryan.
Wow! You're all dressed up today.
What's the occasion?
Well, my boss took me to a pretty expensive restaurant for lunch.
So I thought I should wear something a bit more formal than usual.
Cool.
So how was the lunch?
It was much more fun than I expected.
At work, my boss is really serious.
But at lunch, I got to see the warm, friendly side of her.
The warm, friendly side?
I'm guessing that you don't just mean you got to see her from a different angle.
No. Sometimes we use the word "side" to refer to a part of someone's personality
or an aspect of a thing.
I know we sometimes say look on the bright side.
Right. That's talking about the part of something that's positive.
But a person's personality can have different sides too.
I see.
So you meant that you got to see a friendlier part of your boss' personality?
Yes. She was asking about my life, sharing stories about her kids and even
telling jokes.
That does sound like fun.
Yeah. But the flip side is that lunch took a lot longer than normal, so now I
have a lot of work to catch up on.
The flip side?
What's that?
Well, in the old days, people listen to music on records which had two sides.
The flip side is the side of a record that's not facing you.
Nowadays, when people talk about the flip side, they mean the aspect that's the
opposite of the one you've been talking about.
In this case, we've been saying good things about my lunch, so the flip side is
the one bad thing about it.
Oh. So if we've been talking about bad things, the flip side would be something
good, right?
You got it, Ken.
I'm glad you had such a good lunch with your boss.
Maybe now she'll start showing her friendly side more often.
I hope so.
That would make my job a lot more fun.
(Chinese).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And we're running out of time again.
I'll see you next time.
Bye-bye.
The Dalmatian Coast has a long, rich history which is evidenced by its many
historical buildings and structures.
If you like, you can join a tour group and explore the area including a
third-century Roman shipwreck off the coast.
One decision you'll need to make before you go, though, is how spoiled do you
want to be when you are there.
Friends, the Dalmatian Coast waits for you.
OK. Please join us tomorrow when we discuss D, the vitamin, that is.
Until then, I hope all of you have a great day.
