You often see it promoted as a selling point on drink containers, for example.
Well, what about vitamin B?
Well, it's famous, too, with its magical power to resist colds.
But what about vitamin D?
Hmm. "D" doesn't get the attention other vitamins do.
But it is, as will soon discover, an essential vitamin for your body.

Discover why vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins for your body.
Increasing information and health warnings about the sun have basically moved
people indoors or made them apply large amounts of sunscreen when outside.
But maybe these people are too cautious.
Doctors are now discovering numerous problems related to vitamin D deficiency,
and some are concluding that a little exposure to the sun could help this
situation.
What is it?
Vitamin D is a steroid vitamin that enables the body to absorb calcium - a
mineral necessary for strong bones and healthy teeth.
In addition to bones and teeth, vitamin D seems to aid health in many other
areas.

And today we are in our HEALTH article.
We're talking about vitamin D.
Hmm, vitamin D. All right.
So let's look first at what vitamin actually is.
Vitamins are something that are necessary for your body.
We've talked about them a little bit before, but now we want to look at one
particular vitamin, vitamin D.
That's right.
We are told to always take our vitamins to stay healthy.
And today we're looking at the benefits of vitamin D and the easiest ways to get
it.
That's right.
You can get vitamins through food.
And we want to discover why vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins for
your body.
Yes. And Ryan, I actually really like this article because I like how you get
vitamin D.
That's true, it is.
There are many delicious foods that have vitamin D in them.
That's right.
And there's also fun ways because it's not always just eating.
We're going to learn how you get the most amount of vitamin D in a healthy way.

Well, increasing information and health warnings about the sun have basically
moved people indoors or made them apply large amounts of sunscreen when outside.
That's right.
There are a lot of health concerns with being out in the sun.
There's increasing information - there's always more and more information
coming.
But the sun, we keep... it's said it basically moved us indoors.
Right, because we remember that... we get vitamin D from the sun, but people are
afraid of what the sun can do.
It can damage skin if you're in the sun too much, so.
We say "it moved people indoors." That means, well, they're not going outside as
much. They're more afraid of the sun.
That's right.
The fear of some of the problems the sun can cause, sunburns or skin cancer,
have made people go back inside,
or they're applying large amounts of sunscreen.
And when you apply sunscreen, that means you put it on.
Yeah. And sunscreen is a lotion that you put on to protect yourself from the
damaging effects of the sun.
But maybe these people are too cautious.
That's right. And "cautious" means careful.
So maybe they are being too careful.
Doctors are now discovering numerous problems related to vitamin D deficiency,
and some are concluding... concluding that a little exposure to the sun could
actually help the situation.
Oh, OK. So doctors are finding that people are now getting a vitamin D
deficiency.
Now first remember, you're getting a lot of your vitamin D from the sun, from
being in the sun.
So if you have vitamin D deficiency, what does that mean?
Well, when you have a "deficiency," that means you do not have enough of
something.
So a vitamin D deficiency means you're not getting enough vitamin D in your
body, and your body needs this vitamin.
Well, this could be solved by going outside.
Yeah. Get a little exposure to the sun.
Now that's what they concluded.
That's what the scientists decided was needed.
Absolutely.
Well, what is it?
What is vitamin D?
OK. Now we know it's a vitamin.
So let's see exactly what makes vitamin D different from vitamin A, B or C or
whatever.
OK. Well, vitamin D is a steroid vitamin that enables the body to absorb
calcium,
which is a necessary mineral for bones and teeth to be very strong and healthy.
OK. So we know vitamin D is a steroid vitamin.
Now a "steroid" is a chemical that is made in your body.
That's right. And a steroid is a strength building, it's good for your body.
It helps you with energy and with muscle strength.
It's something you absolutely need.
And especially bone strength.
I know vitamin D is very healthy and very good for your bones.
But it enables the body to absorb calcium, which is even better for your bones.
That's right.
When you absorb something, that means you take it in.
So you think about a piece of cloth or material, you put it in water, all the
water goes into it.
That is to absorb.
So your body needs to absorb the calcium in... inside.
It can't just be floating around.
Well, vitamin D helps that.
Yeah. And of course, "calcium" is a chemical in your teeth and in your bones,
so.
It does give you stronger bones and healthy teeth.
That's right. And "calcium" is absolutely essential if you want to have strong
bones and healthy teeth.
Having strong bones is so important especially as you're growing to get enough
calcium in your body.
But you also need vitamin D so that calcium isn't wasted, so that it can
actually be absorbed.
Right. And it actually does help in many other parts of your body as well.
And we're going to learn a little bit more about that later.
But right now, let's enjoy this skit.
Whoa! Your face is getting really red.
I think it's burning.
Oh. It's because I didn't put on sunscreen yet.
Why not?
Because I'm trying to get enough vitamin D.
I want strong bones and healthy teeth.
What?
Vitamin D enables the body to absorb calcium.
It comes from the sun.
And I can get vitamin D for free.
But how much sunshine do you need?
Hmm, I need about 10 to 15 minutes of direct sunlight, several times per week.
But it's already been a couple of hours.
Oh, no.
That's too much sunshine.
Ouch! My face is hurting.
Give me the sunscreen and hat.
OK. But you know there's other ways to get vitamin D, right?
Really?
Yeah.
How else can you get it?
You can eat foods like salmon and eggs.
And also you can look for foods that are fortified with vitamin D, such as milk,
orange juice and yogurt.
But how do I know?
Just check the label.
