Hi, everybody.
Thanks for joining us here at Studio Classroom Worldwide.
My name is Steve.
Being out of work for any length of time is not a fun position to be in.
I know you would almost do anything to be able to use your skills and earn money
so you could support you and your family.
That's why it's puzzling when people do really odd things at job interviews.
Rather than increasing their chances of getting the job, their words and
behavior do the exact opposite.
Now let's look at some real-life examples of how not to get hired on page 31.
How Not to Get Hired: Bring Your Cockatoo to the Interview.
Some mistakes were peculiar:
The candidate sent his sister to interview in his place.
One candidate sang all of her responses to interview questions.
When asked by the hiring manager if he had any questions for him, the candidate
replied by telling a knock-knock joke.
One prospect told me all of the reasons he shouldn't be hired.
The candidate said she would really prefer a job offer from our competitor.
Some were odd violations of interview etiquette:
When asked by the hiring manager why she was leaving her current job,
the applicant said: My manager is a jerk. All managers are jerks.
(Music).
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
And my name is Ryan.
And we are back in our article talking about how not to get hired at a job
interview.
That's right.
We're going to look at some crazy stories of outstanding people who did very
unfortunate things.
Yeah. And most of these things are so outstanding you might believe that they
were joking, but unfortunately, well, were not.
OK. Well, let's get started because, Ryan, these are funny.
These are some mistakes that were very peculiar.
Yes. And now we see the word "peculiar." And that just means a little bit
strange.
So let's start with the first example.
OK. We're starting with a quote.
Remember, these come from an interview, a survey... a survey about funny things
people do in interviews.
Well, here's the first one.
The candidate sent his sister to interview in his place.
In his place!
Now this means instead of the interviewer going, he just decided: I'll send my
sister to interview for me.
Can you see why that's strange?
I think that's very strange.
We see the word "candidate." That means they're the person who is up for the
job, someone who could possibly get the position.
Instead of going, they send their sister.
Well, they're not going to get the job.
They can't show up for the job interview, why would they show up for the job?
They're not actually interviewing.
That is very strange.
All right. Well, let's see the next one.
One candidate sang all of her responses to interview questions.
Hmm. Unless she was auditioning for a choir or maybe a musical, there's no
reason to sing in a job interview.
That's not very professional.
It doesn't even matter if you have a good voice.
If you're not interviewing for a job that you need to sing for, you're just
making a fool of yourself.
That's right.
Well, this one is... here comes the next one.
It says when asked by the hiring manager if he had any questions for him, the
candidate replied by telling a knock-knock joke.
A knock-knock joke.
OK, let's talk about knock-knock jokes in a minute.
But first, let's talk about what a hiring manager is.
OK, a hiring manager.
We know a manager is someone who is in charge of things in a company, in
different departments.
Now a hiring manager is the person in charge of actually hiring people, so
finding people to get the job, interviewing them, deciding who gets the job.
So you want to make a good impression on this person.
Exactly. And you want to give good answers to their questions.
And when they ask you if you have any questions,
that is usually your chance to give them a good question to show them that
you're interested in learning more about the company.
But what happened here, Kaylah?
Instead of being interested in their company, he told a knock-knock joke.
A knock-knock joke. OK.
Now a knock-knock joke is a certain kind of joke in English that starts with the
phrase "Knock, knock," and it needs to people to work.
Do you know any?
Um, sure. We can do an example.
OK.
Now friends, remember that a knock-knock joke is as if you are knocking on a
door.
So you're talking to the other person.
For example, I would say to Ryan: Knock, knock.
Then I would say: Who's there?
Interrupting cow.
OK. Interrupting cow...
Moo...
Oh. OK, so she interrupted me.
That's a knock-knock joke.
Some are funny, some are not.
Most... most knock-knock jokes are not funny, just like mine was not funny.
OK. So... if you are asked to ask a question,
don't ask a knock-knock joke because it doesn't show the interviewer anything
about you other than the fact that you're lazy and you don't really care about
the job.
Not good.
OK. So moving on to the next one we see: One prospect told me all of the reasons
he shouldn't be hired.
Now why would you do that?
Not a good idea.
Now a "prospect" is someone who could be chosen for something.
In this case, they could be chosen for a job.
But they told them all the reasons why they shouldn't, so now they won't.
OK. So a prospect is another word for a candidate, someone who is an option to
choose from.
Well, I don't think they'll get their job if you tell them: I don't need this
job for these reasons.
Nope. All right.
Our next example: The candidate said she would really prefer a job offer from a
competitor.
That means from a different company.
Oh. That's terrible.
What... can you imagine you go to a job interview, and you say: I would rather
work for them, not you.
And so of course they're going to not hire you because you don't want to be
there.
Exactly, and especially if they want a job from a competing company that is
trying to fight for money and for sales.
That's right.
A competitor is somebody is a company that does kind of the same things that you
do, and you are trying to get the same people to buy your stuff.
So you're against each other.
OK. Now let's go on to some more types of stories here.
Some of them were odd violations of interview etiquette.
Now a violation is when you do something that breaks a rule.
So then what is etiquette?
OK. Well, "etiquette" refers to a set of rules or customs that tell you how to
behave in social situations.
So basically, it means being polite.
All right. Here's our example.
When asked by the hiring manager why she was leaving her current job, the
applicant said: My manager is a jerk. All managers are jerks.
Now a "jerk" refers to someone who is stupid and usually mean.
And this girl just told a manager that she thinks all managers are jerks.
Not smart.
OK. Now let's enjoy the skit.
Every job seeker makes mistakes, big mistakes.
And some are quite peculiar.
Hello. I'm here for the job interview.
Oh.
Are you Robert Jones?
No. I'm Robert's sister.
He sent me to interview in his place.
Oh. Well uh... why do you want to work for our company?
I just want to make some money.
That is why. That is why.
I'm a little lazy, but this job is crazy, but the salary's high.
The salary's high.
How nice...
You like to sing, and you like money.
That's right.
And I also like time off.
I love vacations and holidays.
And that's why you want to work here?
Well, actually I would prefer to work for your competitors.
Then why don't you?
Unfortunately, they're not hiring... well, not hiring me.
I see.
So tell me, why did you leave your last job?
Because my manager was such a jerk.
He fired me.
So do you have any questions?
Yes.
Knock, knock!
Who's there?
Hue.
Hue who?
"Hue" ought to hire me.
Knock, knock.
Who's there?
Donut.
Donut who?
"Donut" call us. We'll callyou. Bye-bye.
