Hi, everybody. Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us.
This month's SOCIAL ISSUES feature digs a little deeper into the problem of
cyber bullying.
As we saw in yesterday's tragic story,
cyber bullying can be more tormenting than being bullied face-to-face because
cyber bullies don't have to reveal who they are.
In other words, they can hide.
Now hopefully, through this lesson, we can understand cyber bullying a little
more, and so better equip ourselves to stop it.
Let's pick up today's reading now at the top of page 37.
Cyber Bullying.
Methods used.
Cyber bullies use several different methods to attack and embarrass their
victims.
They might repeatedly send upsetting texts from an unknown number or post
embarrassing photos of the victim online.
They might post cruel messages on Facebook or make rude comments on a person's
blog.
Once something has been posted, it's extremely difficult to remove it before it
has been seen by lots of people.
Even worse, things posted online never go away and are never completely
forgotten.
(Music).
Hello, everyone.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And we're back talking about Cyber Bullying.
Now we started talking about this yesterday.
And we learned that it is a serious problem and can cause serious harm to
people.
Now we know what it is and we've seen a situation of how it was used, but maybe
there are things we're not aware of that are considered cyber bullying.
Yeah. That's right.
So we want to look at maybe how it actually works, some of the methods that are
used, so.
A method, of course, is a way to do something.
Now we're not discussing these methods so you know how to use them.
We're discussing them so you know how to avoid them, to stay away from them and
to stop other people from doing them.
Absolutely. And you want to prevent cyber bullying as much as possible.
Now cyber bullies use several different methods to attack and embarrass their
victims.
And that's really essentially what bullying is - is attacking and embarrassing
someone intentionally.
Now we know what an attack is.
That is to come after them violently.
And that can be with your words or with your actions.
But what does it mean that we're trying to embarrass a victim?
Well, if you feel "embarrassed," that means that you feel nervous and sad
because of something that was said about you.
Someone made you look bad.
That's right. You're nervous, you're worried, you're really uncomfortable.
And that is what embarrass means.
Usually when you're embarrassed, you might turn a little bit red and because
you're... you feel... feel very shy about what you've done.
Right. And so here, though, it's not just necessarily being shy, it's not cute,
it's actually very harmful.
If someone embarrasses you on purpose and they are being cruel to you, then that
can cause you to feel very negatively or very bad about yourself.
Right. This is the negative kind of embarrassment, not the funny kind like our
parents doing silly things in public.
This is the kind that makes you feel bad about yourself.
And that's what we're trying to avoid.
Right. And so we see here it happens online but there's also many other methods.
Cyber bullies might repeadetly send upsetting texts from an unknown number.
Uh, first, let's talk about that a little bit.
If they repeatedly doing it, what does that mean?
When you repeatedly do something, that means you do it over and over again.
So you're sending a text message from a phone number that you don't recognize.
And... I've had this happen to me before, and I did not like it.
It's uncomfortable.
You feel very scared and weird and... Oh, it's a terrible feeling.
Yeah, I actually remember that happening to you.
But those were upsetting texts, right?
Something that is upsetting, it makes you feel very bad, a little bit angry.
That's right, something... you don't want to be upset.
We want people happy.
We want people enjoy life.
But there are upsetting moments.
So this could be sending upsetting texts intentionally to make them feel bad, or
by posting embarrassing photos of the victim online.
Ooh... OK, we know it's very easy and it's a lot of fun to share photos on
Facebook.
And you can tag people in them and really share a lot of what you've been
through.
But it can also be a tool for cyber bullies.
That's right.
You could take a picture of someone that they wouldn't want other people to see,
and then tag them on Facebook.
And everyone would be able to see it.
Now I know there are silly photos out there.
I'm sure, Ryan, you have a lot of really embarrassing silly photos...
Thanks.
... of me!
Oh, of you!
... of me that you could use to embarrass me.
But because he's a nice friend, he doesn't do that.
I try. I'll be nice to you.
Now these are a couple of different ways that cyber... cyber bullies are
attacking victims.
They might also post cruel messages on Facebook or make rude comments on a
person's blog.
OK. So let's talk about what a comment is.
Usually when we "comment" on something, that is just stating our opinion.
This is what I think.
I am making a comment about it.
But when you're doing it on a blog, that means you are typing it, you are
writing out and leaving it public so everyone else can read it.
Right. So this is used online and people can read your comments and write their
own comments.
This works on Facebook, or as we saw, it also works on a blog.
And a "blog" is defined as an online diary that other people can read.
Now there are some very popular blogs, and then there are blogs that nobody
reads.
But blogs are very common these days.
It's very common for people to want to share what is happening in their life
with other people, especially I think, Kaylah, the younger generation.
They love writing blogs.
But they can be very hurt if someone writes a cruel message on it.
Well, you need to be careful when you're blogging.
Don't say things that others can use against you.
So be careful what you write.
But also be careful what you respond to because once something has been posted,
it's extremely difficult to remove it before it has been seen by lots of people.
Yeah, it's very difficult to get rid of it.
And even worse, things posted online never go away and are never completely
forgotten.
That's right.
Once it's there, it's there for good.
So be careful what you write.
Be kind to each other.
Always be aware what you're doing.
That's right.
Now let's take a look at this skit.
Cyber bullies use several different methods to attack and embarrass their
victims.
I know! They can repeadetly send upsetting texts from an unknown number.
That is upsetting.
Or they can post embarrassing photos of their victim online.
That is embarrassing.
Or they can post cruel messages on Facebook and make rude comments on a person's
blog.
That is cruel and rude too.
Once something has been posted, it's extremely difficult to remove.
Lots of people see it.
Even worse, things online never go away and are never forgotten.
Ha... I know!
There's nothing anyone can do about it.
Oh, yeah?
Well, I'm a victim.
And I'm... I'm going to get support.
Support?
Yes. I'm going to talk to my teachers and parents.
No... Don't do that.
I'm going to change my privacy settings, phone number and e-mail address.
No, no. Don't do that.
I'm going to avoid chat rooms.
Oh, Facebook!
And Facebook.
No, no.
Hey, are you guilty of cyber bullying?
Me?
Are you causing harm to others and, possibly, to yourself?
Uh... me?
Pledge never to say anything online that you wouldn't say to someone's face.
Oh... OK, OK, Ipromise.
