OK. Welcome back, everyone.
We're trying to get the word out that face-to-face, over the Internet, indeed,
any form of bullying is not acceptable.
If you've ever been a victim, an attacker or a passive observer of bully
behavior, there's something you can do.
Let's find out what it is on line 12.
(Music).
Cyber Bullying.
What can you do?
If you're a victim, you need support, so talk to your parents or other adults.
Change your privacy settings, phone number and email address, avoid certain chat
rooms and cancel your Facebook account, if necessary.
If you are guilty of cyber bullying, you are causing harm to others and,
possibly, yourself.
Pledge never to say anything online that you wouldn't say to someone's face.
If you know someone who is being bullied, refuse to go along with it, and tell
an adult.
Take a stand, and help make the Internet safe and enjoyable for everybody.
(Music).
So we've talked a lot about cyber bullying, how it's done, how the awful things
that can happen around it.
But I bet the better question is, Ryan, what can we do to prevent it?
How can we stop this from happening?
Right. And we want to know not just how we can do it, we want to help you.
What can you do to prevent it, stop it from happening and really avoid it if you
can too?
That's right.
This question is "What can you do," not your friend, not your parents, not
your... not your kids, not your students.
What can you do to help?
That's right.
Now if you are a victim, you need support, so talk to your parents or other
adults.
That's right, talk to somebody.
If you're a victim, don't stand alone.
Know that there is help.
If you need help, find someone you trust and share with them because you can
find help, but don't do it alone.
Yeah. And actually Kaylah,
this is a very important point because I think many kids don't like to talk to
their parents about what happens online, on Facebook or in their blogs.
They just kind of keep it to themselves.
And that's really not what they should do.
You know you should go find help; tell someone.
That's right.
And maybe if you're uncomfortable sharing with your parents, I hope you're not,
I hope you can, but if not, find an adult that you do trust.
Find someone that can... can help you out.
We don't want you out there feeling like you're alone because you're not.
Yes. And if you know how to, you should also change your privacy settings.
This is important for websites like Facebooks... Facebook, MySpace and blogs.
They all have privacy settings that can really... set how people are able to see
your information and write messages to you.
That's right.
Don't leave it on just the generic "Everything's OK" setting.
Go in and be specific about it.
Go through, read about them and figure out how to protect yourself.
Another one is phone number and email addresses - don't post them.
Right. Don't post them.
And if someone is... is bullying you on your e-mail address or calling your
phone or sending you text,
change your phone number and change your e-mail address.
Another way is to avoid certain chat rooms.
Now a chat room, we don't use them as often anymore.
I mean, we have Chat Room here at Studio Classroom.
But this is a different idea.
Right. An online "chat room" is a place where you go to talk with people.
I write a message, the other person can write a message, and you can talk back
and forth.
But it's not just between two people like Facebook talking back and forth.
Instead, there's a lot of people logged in as they...
It's like they've opened the door into a room and they're all talking to each
other, but you're doing it over the Internet.
So be careful what chat rooms you go into.
Avoid the ones where you can be hurt.
Exactly, yeah.
You do not want to go into a dangerous chat room.
And many of them are dangerous.
Now something else you can do is simply cancel your Facebook account, if
necessary.
Ryan, cancel my Facebook account?
Are you serious?
Yeah, I'm serious.
If someone is bullying you enough, cancel your Facebook account.
It's not as important as you might think it is.
That's right. That's a good point.
Your Facebook account is not the only social life you have.
If you are being bullied on there, just get rid of it.
You can use e-mail and you call your friends.
You can see them at school.
You can see them in different places.
But if you're being hurt through Facebook, it's not worth it.
Exactly. So if you think you should, then cancel it.
Get rid of Facebook and you can avoid the bully completely.
Now if you are the one who is guilty of cyber bullying, you are causing harm to
others and, possibly, yourself.
Now the word "guilty" means you feel guilt or you are responsible for.
So you are responsible to society for something that you have done.
And you should... you probably feel remorse, meaning you feel bad about what you
have done.
Now if you are cyber bullying, you are responsible for that.
Yeah. Usually we use the word "guilty" to describe when someone has done
something wrong.
Now this last sentence is a very important one.
And I think it's great that Liz has chosen to talk about it in Grammar on the
Go.
Hi, friends. I hope you're doing well today.
My name is Liz, and it's time for Grammar on the Go.
This month's SOCIAL ISSUES article is on Cyber Bullying.
And our writer writes:
If you are guilty of cyber bullying, you are causing harm to others and,
possibly, yourself.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Our focus today is on the phrase, to be guilty of.
Normally, when we say someone is guilty of something, we're talking about how
that person did break the law, like:
The man was found guilty of robbing the bank.
But "to be guilty of" doesn't always have to be related to breaking the law.
It can also be used to describe how someone is responsible for doing something
wrong.
In the case of today's sentence, the writer is saying:
If you're responsible for cyber bullying, you're causing harm to others and
possibly, yourself.
Let's have a look at some more examples.
Although spreading rumors is not against the law, it is not a good thing to do.
So let's say your co-worker Gina has been going around spreading rumors around
the office, and everyone knows this.
Then you can say:
Everyone in the office knows Gina is guilty of spreading rumors.
We can even use this phrase to talk or joke about activities that aren't
necessary immoral, but they're not healthy.
For example, a lot of people believe it's best not to eat at midnight.
But there are those who still enjoy snacking at midnight.
So if Jason has a habit of eating snacks at midnight, he can say:
I am guilty of midnight snacking.
If you check out today's Grammar Tip section, you'll find more example sentences
there.
That's it for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off.
Bye-bye.
Thank you, Liz.
So if you are guilty, you need to stop cyber bullying.
Then pledge never to say anything online that you wouldn't say to someone's
face.
And when you pledge something, that means you promise to not do it.
Right. Now if you know someone who is being bullied, refuse to go along with it,
and tell an adult.
That's right.
Take a stand, and help make the Internet safe and enjoyable for everybody.
OK. When you "take a stand," that means you see something is wrong and you are
going to do something to fix it.
You're going to fight for what is right.
That's right.
Defend your point of view.
Take a stand.
Be the difference that can help somebody else and their life not be cyber
bullied.
Absolutely. Now, now that we've given you some great information to think about,
let's go visit the Chat Room.
Hey, Bryan, I'm wondering if you can help me with something.
OK. What do you have in mind?
Well, one of the pipes in my bathroom started leaking last night.
Do you know any plumbers?
Hmm, let me think.
I know of a good one that helped with my neighbor's renovation.
I can ask my neighbor.
Ask your neighbor?
If you know him, why do you have to ask your neighbor?
Oh, no. I don't know him.
I know of him.
Wait, I'm confused.
You know of him, but you don't know him?
That's right.
In the context of knowing people, there's a distinction between knowing someone
and knowing of that person.
If you've met someone, you know them.
But if you have heard of someone, you know of that person.
Oh, so you haven't met the plumber, you just heard of him from your neighbor.
That's right.
I see. What about "know about someone"?
Does that have a different meaning?
It sure does.
If I say I know about the plumber, then there's something about the plumber
which I know but the rest of the world doesn't know.
Oh, like a secret.
Yep. Or I have heard about something that has happened to the plumber.
Well, thanks for the explanation.
I'd appreciate it if you could find me that plumber.
OK, sure. Let me call my neighbor and find out how to reach him.
Thanks.
(Chinese).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And I guess that's all the time we have for today.
I'll see you soon.
Bye-bye.
Thank you again, Michelle.
We appreciate those tips.
What is cyber bullying?
It's when people use the Internet and other technology to attack and hurt
people.
The pain it causes is more mental and emotional than it is physical.
But it's not uncommon for cyber bully victims to manifest physical problems too.
Cyber bullying can do serious and lasting damage to a person as things posted
online never go away and are never completely forgotten.
Friends, let's stand together against bullying.
And I hope all of you have a great day.
Bye-bye.
