Welcome back, everybody.
A certain world-famous personality has taken edible wearable art to historic
heights - a dress made of raw steaks?
I think we could tone that down a bit by carrying a purse made from beef jerky
instead.
It looks just like alligator skin.
And from what I've read, the purse tastes great.
Mmm. OK, more on hairy wearables on line 9.
Would You Wear That?
Britain's Queen Victoria gave gifts of jewelry made of her own hair.
People also commonly wore jewelry containing hair from loved ones who had died.
Hair jewelry remained popular until the early 1900s, when a short haircut called
the "bob" became fashionable.
Today, although only a few artists know how to make it, hair jewelry is
appearing again.
The unique jewelry can now be found in traditional and modern styles.
Without a doubt, these kinds of creative ideas promise to keep fashion
interesting!
We are talking about a very strange kind of jewelry that's made of human hair.
Now we did learn that it's kind of strange today, but it was once very popular.
It was given as a bracelet, which is worn around the wrist as decoration, as a
token of affection.
Now Ryan, I just want to take a second to ask: Have you ever received any kind
of token?
Well, I've never received a bracelet as a token.
But actually I was given a scarf, which is a piece of cloth that you wear around
your neck to keep it warm,
and someone, you know, gave it to me and said: Remember me.
Oh. That is definitely a token.
It shows that they appreciate you.
Well, they used to give human hair jewelry as a token back in the 1600s.
That's right.
Britain's Queen Victoria gave gifts of jewelry made of her own hair.
Now to give a gift of your own hair might be a little strange except if you're
the queen.
People would think that is very cool to have a piece of you with them.
Yeah. That actually would be pretty cool to have.
And remember, it seems a little strange to us today.
But this used to happen a long time ago.
Now this next sentence tells us what I most commonly think of in hair jewelry.
People also commonly wore jewelry containing hair from a loved one who has died.
Yeah. And I can see why.
Hair is a part of someone.
And especially if it's someone that you can't be around very often or someone
who has died, you get to keep that part of them with you.
That's right.
I've heard of a lady cutting a piece of her hair off and giving it to a man to
keep while he travels maybe to war,
or he has to go on a long... a long journey far away from her.
It's a way of keeping her with him.
Exactly. And that I can understand.
I don't think that's very weird.
I actually think that's sweet.
Oh. Well, maybe you could enjoy hair jewelry, Ryan.
Well, maybe.
Well, hair jewelry remained popular until the early 1900s, when a short haircut
called the "bob" became fashionable.
Well, this makes sense.
You used to wear your hair very long all the time.
You never had short hair as a lady.
But then this haircut came around in the early 1900s, and it's called a bob.
Yeah, a "bob" cut.
And it's a very short haircut where the woman's hair is above the shoulders.
That's right.
The hair is cut above the shoulders but below the ears, and is even all the way
around the head.
So it's not too long in the front or too long in the back.
It's all the way even.
And if you look at pictures from the early 1900s, most women did wear a bob cut.
Right. That was a very fashionable haircut.
And some women even wear it still today.
Now something that is "fashionable" is very popular during a certain time.
That's right.
Now we know fashion is how you look, how you dress, what you do with your
make-up, what you do with your hair.
So if it is fashionable, that means you are doing it the way most people enjoy
and like at a certain time.
Right. And remember, the word fashionable doesn't only need to... it's not only
talking about what you wear.
It can also talk about different things that you do as well.
That's right.
Well, today, although only a few artists know how to make... how to make it,
hair jewelry that is, hair jewelry is appearing again.
Right, so it's coming back.
People are thinking: Well, maybe this isn't such a strange idea.
And so now artists are starting to create hair jewelry again.
Now not very many people know how.
It says few people know how to create it, so they have to learn.
But it is becoming interesting and popular again.
Yeah. And I would be interested in seeing what this might look like today.
I think you might be able to see what it used to look like from the early 1900s.
But now it's becoming popular again, maybe I'd like to see if it's different.
Well, the... unique jewelry can be found in traditional and modern styles.
And without a doubt, these kinds of creative ideas promise to keep fashion
interesting!
OK. So we see there... there are two different styles.
And we see the phrase, "without a doubt." And that phrase means that it's in
emphasize on opinion.
It means you believe that something is true.
That's right, without a doubt.
You have no doubt in your... mind.
You completely believe that this could happen.
Right. And we... we see we believe that these kinds of creative ideas promise to
keep fashion very interesting.
Maybe strange, but also interesting.
Well, I've enjoyed talking about some very strange fashion ideas.

For now, let's watch this video learning more about milk clothes.
In the machine the mass is heated.
Inside there are two spirals where the mass is knitted and then pressed into a
spindle.
The fibers are then created through here.
These textile fibers and then further refined and then sent to various fabric
manufacturers.
Back in our studio, Anke begins work on another design for her fashion
collection which uses these milk fibers.
As a child, she already began to develop a unique relationship between fashion
and natural science.
At the age of 19, this business savvy woman started her own company under the
international fashion label name, MCC.
My great grandmother was a professional seamstress.
And that's where I first got inspired by this kind of work.
At the age of 19, I went to Tokyo, and then came back starting a T-shirt design
collection.
At the same time, I was also studying microbiology.
Eventually, I had to decide which direction I wanted to focus my career.
I decided on pursuing multi-design fashion after finishing my degree two years
earlier.
Then I got into the milk fiber development.
Her clients are enthusiastic about her innovative products.
Her newest products have already won two innovative fashion prizes.
The fibers feel like silk.
It has an amazingly soft texture.
I have many clients who have said they feel cooler when wearing them and no
longer sweat as much.
And sometimes it just feels like you're not wearing anything at all!
When milk meets fashion.
(Chinese).
And no doubt about it, we have to say goodbye now. I'll see you next time.
Bye-bye.
Thank you so much, Michelle.
There's a German fashion designer who is making clothes from milk.
And friends, this isn't just some one- or two-year fad; it's been happening a
long time, and it's gaining popularity.
Something that's also enjoying a revival is the custom of giving loved ones
jewelry made of human hair,
like they did in the 1600s because nothing says "I love you" like something you
just cut off of your head.
Friends, go out, speak a little English.
And then join us tomorrow for a new lesson about the "unvacation." See you then.
Hi.
they may never get back to even tie.
yes.
why.
you know that and you'll find a way to undermine its mass is perfect for me.
I look at it.
they got me into that.
and I.
