Hi, everybody. Welcome back.
You know, snacks have to have a great flavor.
There's no doubt about that.
But for me, what makes a snack really, really great is its texture; and the
crunchier the better.
I think this explains my friend's love for ice cream cones.
What I mean is he loves eating the cones plain without any ice cream.
Let's learn where these cones come from down on line 9.
(Music).
Where Did Those Tasty Treats Come From?
Ice Cream Cones.
While ice cream has a long history in both China and ancient Greece, the ice
cream cone is a recent invention.
The edible conical ice cream holder became popular at the St. Louis, Missouri,
World's Fair in 1904.
Syrian-American Ernest Hamwi had a waffle booth next to an ice cream stand.
When the ice cream seller ran out of dishes, Hamwi shaped a waffle "cone" to
hold ice cream.
This version of the story is the official one, but four other men at the same
fair also claim to have invented the ice cream cone.
(Music).
All right.
So we've learned a little bit of where potato chips came from.
And now we're moving on to my favorite tasty treat on this list - ice cream
cones.
Ice cream cones.
Everybody loves a good ice cream cone.
Well, ice cream has a long history in both China and ancient Greece.
The ice cream cone is a relatively recent invention.
That's right.
We're not just talking about ice cream here, we're talking about ice cream
cones.
Now you can see a picture of one on page 49 of your Studio Classroom magazine.
Now that's a big ice cream cone.
Most people don't get four scoops of ice cream.
But you can see the shape of a cone.
And that is what we're talking about.
That's right.
Now this edible conical ice cream holder became popular at the St. Louis,
Missouri, the World Fair in 1904.
Now Ryan, I've actually heard the story before.
It's a very common story, and it's actually true how this came about.
So let's take it back, we're going to talk about an edible conical ice cream
holder.
Now originally, ice cream was not served in a conical shape.
It was served in a dish.
Right. And usually people would like to eat ice cream in that dish.
But the ice cream cone now has become very popular.
And it first got its start at this World Fair.
Now an ice cream cone, it is edible, first of all.
What does that mean if it's edible?
When it is "edible," it means it is safe to eat.
You can eat it.
You cannot eat a dish or a plate, but you can eat an ice cream cone.
So we say it's an edible conical shape.
Now what does the conical make us think of?
OK. The word "conical" means that is shaped like a cone, so.
A cone is very round and has a long point.
And so it's very... kind of like a sharp shape.
And when you turn that shape upside down, then you can put ice cream inside it.
That is the shape of an ice cream cone.
That's right.
So if you take a circle and roll the crcle up, and you kind of make the ends...
the bottom ends touch,
and... the other ends stay open, that's the shape of a cone that we get.
Yeah, exactly.
And just like you can see in the picture, that's the shape of an ice cream cone.
Well, it came about at the World's Fair in 1904.
A Syrian-American Ernest Hamwi had a waffle booth next to an ice cream stand.
So the World's Fair is a very famous fair where all kinds of people from all
over the world come together.
And while you're there, there's all kinds of food to try.
Right. So Ernest... or Ernst... I'm sorry, Ernest Hamwi decided to try all these
different foods.
And he is Syrian-American there.
The word "Syrian" simply means he is uh, from Syria, or his family is from
Syria.
But he is Syrian-American.
So he does live in America.
Now the reason it's important to know that Ernest is from... is Syrian-American
is because the waffles that he is selling are a Syrian treat.
They are from the Middle East.
So his booth was right next to an ice cream stand.
So when we say a waffle booth, what does that mean?
Well, a "booth" is referring to, like you said, maybe a stand, a stall or a
table where you can have items or sell things usually at a fair.
And this is at the World's Fair.
So he's there selling his traditional treat next to an ice cream stand.
Well, the ice cream guy has a problem.
Yeah. The... the person selling ice cream he ran out of dishes.
And Hamwi shaped a waffle cone to hold the ice cream for him.
So this is so clever.
He's making these waffles.
And they're... they're a flat shape.
And they've usually got like holes and shapes in them.
But they're... this is a circle and it's flat.
And so he just rolls one up and hands it to the ice cream man.
And the ice cream man, instead of putting the ice cream in a dish, just puts the
ice cream inside the waffle.
And it tasted great!
Yeah. And this is a really genius, a really good idea because now the... the
waffle booth, they can sell more waffles.
Because they see people want ice cream, they need dishes.
So here, we'll roll up a waffle, sell it to you, and you can use this instead.
Yes. Well, this version of the story is the official one.
This is how it happened.
He saw that they needed dishes, and knew that he could sell more product and
just was creative, used his imagination.
Now Ryan, what I think it's great about it too is when you're walking around a
fair, you don't want to be looking for a place to return a dish or throw away
trash.
And this made it edible.
Exactly, yeah.
And that's what I like about ice cream cones.
You hold it, you eat your ice cream.
When you finish your ice cream, you eat the cone as well, and you're done!
That's right. The only thing you worry about is the ice cream dripping into your
hands.
Which does happen.
Now we've heard the official story, but four other men at the same fair also
claim to have invented the ice cream cone as well.
OK. So we do know for sure that the ice cream cone comes from the 1904 World's
Fair in St. Louis, Missouri in the United States.
But some people claim it was their idea as opposed to this Syrian man Ernest.
Well, no... no matter how it came about, it's fun to see how someone can be so
creative to invent it.
Yeah. I... honestly I'm so thankful because I love ice cream cones.
Where I come from, it's very warm in the summer.
And I love... I used to always enjoy an ice cream cone every week when I would
go visit my great grandpa.
So this is kind of an important treat to me.
That's right.
And ice cream cones have grown over the years.
There's all different varieties you can get them; covered in sprinkles or
chocolate or...
They're an exciting treat and fun, and a great summer break.
That's right.
Well, it's time for us now to go watch this skit.
We're back today talking about more tasty treats.
Yeah!
Oh. I have a question.
Yeah.
Where did potato chips come from?
Ha... good question!
Potato chips resulted from an irritated chef in Saratoga, New York.
Really!
Tell me more.
Well, a customer decided that his french fries were too thick.
So he sent them back to the kitchen.
Oh. Is that what irritated the chef?
Yes.
So he decided to irk the customer with very thinly sliced, but crisply fried
potatoes.
Oh! Did that irk the customer?
No.
His plan backfired.
The guest loved the chips.
And soon, lots of people were requesting the chef's Saratoga Chips!
I want to request some too.
I love potato chips.
Me too.
Any other questions?
Oh, yes.
Where did ice cream cones come from?
Oh, good question.
Ice cream cones were invented at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri.
Really!
Tell me about it.
A waffle booth was next to an ice cream stand.
The ice cream seller ran out of dishes.
Oh, no.

And hooray! The ice cream cone was invented.
Well, yes.
And that's the official story.
(Music).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And that concludes our Language Tips today.
I'll see you tomorrow.
Bye-bye.
Friends, do you see your favorite snack in this lesson?
If not, what is it?
And what's the story of how and when it was invented?
