Welcome back, everybody.
There are few things that refresh the heart and mind more than a boat tour on
Skagit Bay.
The brisk fresh air combined with the thrill of seeing a magnificent whale or a
majestic eagle is an unforgettable experience.
OK, now let's get off the boat and head over to Skagit Valley's historic Lincoln
Theater on line 11.
(Music).
Washington State's Skagit Valley.
Lincoln Theater.
This restored building, built in 1926, was a silent movie house and vaudeville
theater.
It now hosts many community events.
Visitors can enjoy a year-round schedule of concerts, shows, movies, workshops
and more.
The pride of the theater is its pipe organ - the original used for silent
movies.
It is in good condition, and organists are welcome to come and perform on it.
(Music).
And now we are moving on to another site to go to in Skagit Valley, Washington,
and this is Lincoln Theater.
Well, this is exciting.
I love theater, so I'm excited to talk about a theater.
Now Brandon, so far in Skagit Valley, we've talked about nature.
So we know we're in the countryside, we're away from the urban areas.
We've seen flowers and boat rides and whales.
And now we're seeing something that's indoors.
That's right.
And it's in a beautiful building, the Lincoln Theater.
And this has been "restored." If something has been "restored," they have...
went back and they've done some... maybe remodeling.
They've done different things to the building to kind of refresh it, to bring it
back to a good state.
That's right.
You've used "remodel, restored, refresh," all of those start with "R-E." That
means to do it again.
So these are buildings... this building was old and they made it look better and
made it new again.
Well, it's so old, in fact, it was built in 1926.
That's right. And it was a silent movie house.
Now maybe you can think back to silent movies, maybe not.
Maybe you don't know what that is.
But of course, back a long time ago, they had the silent movies.
You just watched it.
There was no sound, and you just watched the movie.
A very different kind of movie than we're used to today, Kaylah.
That's right.
It was before technology could put sound with a film, before sound was in
movies.
So in these old movie houses, which is an old-fashioned way of saying "movie
theater," there used to be a stage as well as a screen.
And they would play music along with the silent movies.
So it not only was a silent movie house, but was also a vaudeville theater.
That's right.
"Vaudeville," referring to a way of doing theater many years ago, back in the
1800s or early 1900s.
And this is where they had dancing, and they told jokes, so there was comedy
involved.
And this was a kind of... a kind of engage people.
They brought people in to what they were doing.
It wasn't just watching a silent movie.
The audience could actually kind of take part in what was going on.
That's right.
Vaudeville was live theater, so you're watching actual people in real time.
And if you kind of use your imagination, it's, Brandon, a little bit light, a
variety show where they had different acts.
And so as you said, there'd be dancing or comedy.
It was a very colorful and very fun style of theater.
Well, it now hosts many community events.
And so there are different things going on there now, Kaylah.
There are schools that they can go there and use the auditorium.
Visitors can actually come there and enjoy a year-round schedule of different
things that are going on.
That's right.
Now the reason I pointed out earlier that this would have a stage in it is
because this stage is very old.
And it's important that there is one because of all the events that still happen
here.
So you can see a year-round schedule.
"Year-round" meaning that all year long, there's something happening.
And the "schedule," of course, is a list of planned events.
And so you could probably go on their website and see some of the different
things that are going on.
We have examples here: concerts, shows, movies and workshops.
And even more than that.
Well, let's see.
There's concerts, where you see music.
Shows, which will be more about entertainment, dancing and acting.
And it's still a movie theater.
That's right. It is still a movie theater.
And also, they have "workshops." If you go to a workshop, it's a meeting where
people maybe are telling you how to do something.
You can learn something new, or maybe even practice it there yourself.
That's right.
Brandon, have you ever gone to a workshop?
Uh... I think I have gone to workshops probably in college.
And you go and you can listen to someone speak, and you can take some notes, and
you can learn something there.
It's... it's a meeting, but it's something that's very practical that you can
put into use after you leave that meeting.
I like that word "practical." It's kind of like a classroom setting but is
specific to certain topic.
So you choose a workshop according to what you'd like to learn.
For example, I go to workshops about theater, about teaching and about theater
so I learn how to do specific things in workshops.
Well, we see that the pride of the theater is its pipe organ.
I like this word "pride" here.
If it's the pride of something, they, of course, are very proud of it.
And they want to tell people about it.
They want to tell people about this pipe organ.
Now when we also talk about pride, that means they are excited to share with
other people,
and it's something they tell you about in hopes that you come see it.
Well, this is a pipe organ.
Now you're going to use your imagination here to picture a pipe organ.
It is a huge instrument.
That's right.
It has pipes, of course.
And it has the keyboard that you play on and the sound comes out through the
pipes.
And you can see this in different places, but pipes all along the wall, it's
quite interesting.
That's right. It's a beautiful and large instrument.
They originally used them for silent movies.
Well, it's in good condition, and organists are welcome to come and perform on
it.
So it's hard to find beautiful and old instruments like this, so as an organist
- someone who plays an organ - it would be exciting.
Well, right now it's time for us to visit Ken over in the Chat Room.
Bryan, you grew up in Springfield, right?
Yes, I did.
Uh, why?
Well, do you know someone from there by the name of Jason Turner?
Oh, yes.
His family lives right next to mine.
Why do you ask?
Well, apparently he's an actor in a movie coming out this month.
There's an interview with him in this magazine.
Cool! I haven't been in touch with him since he moved to Hollywood a few years
ago.
I am glad he's been so successful.
The magazine refers to him as "the pride of Springfield." But I thought pride
was a feeling, not a person.
That's a great point, Ken.
Say, why don't we have Doris explain this one.
OK.
The word "pride" usually refers to a feeling of satisfaction with oneself.
It can mean either a positive sense of accomplishment, or a negative belief that
you are more important than other people.
But "pride" can also refer to a thing or person that causes another person or a
group of people to feel proud.
OK. So saying that Jason Turner is the pride of Springfield means that the
people of Springfield feel like their town is important because of him, right?
That's right.
What about the saying "pride and joy"?
Does that mean the same as the pride of someone?
Yes. "Pride and joy" is an idiom that describes the object of one's great
pleasure or happiness.
Oh. So I could say that English is my pride and joy?
No. That wouldn't be very standard, Ken.
Think of either a specific person or a specific object.
Many parents say that their kids are their pride and joy.
Oh, I see.
So my brother's sports car is his pride and joy.
Yes, nice use of the idiom.
Thanks, Bryan.
(Chinese).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
