Hello, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
My name is Steve.
Thanks for joining us.
Well, I have to confess to you, I love sweet things.
I will never, ever refuse a piece of chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, or
a brownie, or a scoop of coffee ice cream.
Speaking of coffee, I put sugar in my coffee.
I also put sugar in my tea.
I even put sugar on my oatmeal.
Growing up, my concerned grandmother saw how much I loved sweet things, and she
warned me, saying,
"Sugar is poison to the body." Well, was she right?
Let's open our Studio Classroom magazines now to page 18 and read about Sugar
and Your Health.
Sugar and Your Health.
Sugar may taste good, but it's not good for you.
Are you health conscious?
Then you probably watch the amount of fat in your diet.
But remember to monitor the amount of sugar you consume as well.
While sugar tastes good, its effects on the body are not.
Consuming too many drinks sweetened with sugar can raise your risk of developing
type 2 diabetes.
Drinking one to two sweet drinks a day raises that risk 26 percent according to
a recent study of 310,000 people.
(Music).
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
And my name is Brandon.
Today we are talking about our HEALTH article.
And we're talking about sugar.
I love sugar, Kaylah!
I love to eat chocolate chip cookies.
I love muffins. It's great.
Well, Brandon, I'm sorry to tell you that this HEALTH article is about sugar,
yes.
But it's about how sugar is not good for you.
Oh. That's too bad.
That's kind of bad news, but maybe we can still have a little sugar.
Well, we see that sugar may taste good.
But as Kaylah just said, it's not actually good for you.
That's right.
We're talking about Sugar and Your Health.
Well, our article starts with a question.
And Brandon, I'm going to ask you: Are you health conscious?
Sometimes I'm health conscious; but on the weekends, not so much.
I like to eat kind of whatever I want.
But during the week I try to think of: Am I eating enough vegetables? Am I
eating enough fruits?
So I am somewhat health conscious, meaning that I think about what I put into my
body.
That's right.
When you're conscious, you are aware of something and are careful with it.
So are you careful with your health?
Well, if you are, then you probably watch the amount of fat in your diet.
That's a funny phrase, you watch the amount of fat.
Are you actually watching the fat?
Well, you're paying attention to what you're putting into your body, and you're
asking yourself how much fat is in what you are eating.
That's right. We need to be aware of what we put into our bodies.
And that's what it means to watch it.
Well, remember to monitor the amount of sugar that you consume as well.
So if you are health conscious, don't just think about the amount of fat, but
also the amount of sugar that you consume.
That's right. And We have the word there "monitor." That means just to watch
something.
And so you want to be careful how much sugar you put into your body.
And you can also monitor other things.
If you have children, and you're watching children, you need to monitor them and
make sure they don't get into trouble.
That's right.
So monitor is not just talking about what we eat.
But we see the word "consume." And that is what we are using.
And here we're talking about eating, so consume means to eat; how much are you
eating, are you putting into your body?
Well, that's a good question.
You need to be aware of that.
And while sugar tastes good, its effects on the body are not.
So yes, sugar does taste good, but there are some negative effects or negative
results for your body.
If you take in too much sugar, it's going to be bad for your body.
And right now we're going to have our Grammar on the Go.
Hi, friends. How are you doing today?
My name is Liz, and it's time for Grammar on the Go.
I'm here in my friend's kitchen, and I'm about to enjoy some treats.
So do you enjoy having sweet things?
I know I do.
But we find out in today's article:
While sugar tastes good, its effects on the body are not.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence, by the way.
Basically it just means: Even though sugar tastes good, its effects on the body
are not good.
But to avoid repeating the adjective "good," the second "good" is removed, but
is understood.
So notice this sentence pattern:
While [something] is [adjective], [something else] is/are not.
This is a good pattern to use when you want to talk about how a subject may have
a certain quality,
but there is something about this subject that has a quality that's totally
opposite.
For example, let's say Felicia keeps her office neat and tidy, but her
apartment, interestingly enough, is a mess.
So we can say:
While Felicia's... Felicia's office, excuse me, is very organized, her apartment
is not.
Or let's suppose you have an exam, and there are two parts to it.
The first part is not difficult, but the second part is very tough.
So we can say:
While the first part of the exam is easy, the second part is not.
So give this pattern a try.
And that's it for today.
Time for me to enjoy some treats.
But I'll be careful, I won't have too much.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off.
Bye-bye.
Thank you, Liz.
Well, we see consuming too many drinks sweetened with sugar can raise your risk
of developing type 2 diabetes.
Now we see the word "consuming" here that goes with the word "consume" from
earlier, meaning what you are putting into your body.
And we see that if you consume, or drink, or take in too much of something,
if you take in too many drinks sweetend with sugar, this can raise your risk of
diabetes.
And so we have the word here "sweeten." That just simply means to add sugar to
something.
You may want to sweeten your tea, so you add sugar to your tea.
That's right.
When we sweeten, we make it taste sweeter.
But Brandon, there are other ways to make something taste sweeter.
You could use honey or different kinds of plants to do that as well.
But here we are specifically talking about a sweetener with sugar in it.
So this help... this... using this kind of drinks raises your risk of diabetes.
"Type 2 diabetes," in fact.
That's right.
And diabetes is something that is very dangerous.
Type 2 diabetes is more common in adults.
And so if you take in too much sugar, you could develop this disease.
That's right.
This is an unbalanced blood is what diabetes is.
And type 2, you developed usually from a bad diet.
So we see that sugar is part of that diet.
Well, drinking one to two sweet drinks a day raises that risk 26 percent
according to a recent study of 310,000 people.
Wow. And so we need to be careful not to take in too much sugar.
We need to be health conscious.
We need to think about what we are putting into our bodies.
Right now we have a skit.
Sugar in the morning, sugar in the evening, sugar at supper time.
Excuse me.
Are you health conscience?
Yes, I am.
I watch the amount of fat in my diet.
What about the amount of sugar?
Sugar? Oh, no.
I don't worry about sugar.
You should.
It's important to monitor the amount of sugar you consume.
But I love sweets.
Well, while sugar tastes good, its effects on your body are not.
Come on. What's bad about sugar?
Drinks sweetened with sugar can raise your risk for diabetes.
Oh. That's not good.
Excess sugars form triglycerides, known to cause heart disease.
Oh. That's definitely not good.
A sugary diet may even cause depression.
Depression?
Oh... How sad!
And sugar may even decrease your ability to think clearly.
Huh? What did you say?
Think clearly.
Oh. Yeah, well... but, but... I... I love sugar.
Sugar in the morning, sugar in the evening, sugar... and... and it gives me a
lot of energy.
Oh, yeah.
For extra energy, reach for some protein.
But I need sugar.
I want sugar.
I love sugar.
All right, all right.
If you must have sugar, only consume a safe amount.
A safe amount?
OK.
Here is your sugar for today.
What? That's it?
Are you kidding?
I can't even see this!
