Hi, everybody. Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
I want you to keep your eyes on Elle Fanning.
That's right.
She's a young actress whose star is on the rise.
Now our deck says that Elle Fanning is a "regular" teen girl.
But I'm not so sure she really is.
You see, she started acting before she was three, she now plays lead roles in
major Hollywood movies, and she has a world-famous actress for a sister.
Hmm. Let's start reading this month's PROFILE and try to find out the regular
side of Elle Fanning on page 44.
Elle Fanning.
This regular teen girl is a rising Hollywood star.
This month Elle Fanning has a lot to celebrate.
She just turned 14, and she'll be finishing eighth grade soon.
She's also enjoying an enviable spot on Hollywood's A-list.
In the past, this slender blonde has been better known as child star Dakota
Fanning's little sister.
But lately she's been stepping out of her sister's shadow and into her own
limelight.
Last summer she starred in Steven Spielberg's hit sci-fi flick Super 8.
Hello, everyone.
My name is Brandon.
And my name is Kaylah.
And today we are talking about our PROFILE article.
We are talking about a famous person.
Now something exciting about today's article is we're talking about a regular
teenage girl who is becoming a rising Hollywood star.
And her name is Elle Fanning.
Maybe you have heard of her, or maybe you have heard of her sister.
But we do see here that she is a regular teen girl, but she is becoming more and
more popular.
That's right. She is someone that maybe you would just see on the street and not
think she was anybody too strange.
She's very regular, but she's becoming very famous very quickly.
So we're excited to talk about Elle Fanning.
You know, she has a lot to celebrate this month because this month she will be
turning 14.
So as we see, Brandon, she is still quite young.
She is quite young.
And so she's celebrating her birthday, and she can celebrate her success as
well.
So she has lots and lots to think about and celebrate and be thankful for.
Absolutely.
At the age of 14 to be celebrating a Hollywood career is very exciting.
So this month she's celebrating, so we thought we would take time here at Studio
Classroom to celebrate with her.
And she'll also be finishing eighth grade soon.
So that's something else that she can celebrate.
And she's also enjoying an enviable spot on Hollywood's A-list.
Now an "enviable" spot is the idea that you envy something, you want to be like
someone else or you wish that you can be in that same situation.
And so a lot of people look at Elle Fanning and think: Wow! She has a great
life. I wish I could have that same kind of life.
That's right. She's definitely enviable.
You would definitely wish you could be in this kind of situation.
You know, she sounded like a regular teenage girl.
She's turning 14; she's graduating from eighth grade; she...
But then we go to the next sentence: Oh, wait. She's on the A-list of Hollywood.
That's right.
So she doesn't sound like a regular person, actually.
If you're on the A-list in Hollywood, that means you are a very good actor and
you've kind of made it to the top, as we would say.
The A-list. Of course, "A" being the first letter in the alphabet.
That means you're in a very good position.
That's right.
In Hollywood, in famous circles, we have lists.
And it's not actually a list of people, but it's famous people.
And it goes from A to D list.
So she's at the top of this, which is impressive for a 14-year-old girl.
Well, Kaylah, let's find out a little bit more about her history.
We see that in the past, this slender blonde has been better known as child star
Dakota Fanning's little sister.
So we see the word "slender" here, slender blonde.
An adjective; "slender" meaning very thin.
That's right.
And if you look on page 45 in your Studio Classroom magazine, you can see a
picture of Elle with her older sister Dakota Fanning,
whom you probably recognize as she is a very well-known child and teen actor.
So before now, Elle was just known as Dakota's younger sister.
But lately she's been stepping out of her sister's shadow into her own
limelight.
Now if you are in someone's shadow, that means you are not really receiving much
attention.
People were paying a lot of attention to Dakota, but they weren't paying a lot
of attention to Elle.
And so we see that she's stepping out of that shadow into her own "limelight,"
kind of just a spotlight of her own.
She is now receiving attention for her skills and her talent.
That's right.
"Limelight" refers to a theater term.
It means to be in the spotlight of, to have the focus of attention.
So she is getting her own limelight, she's becoming more famous.
It's definitely a big shadow to step out of.
Dakota Fanning is very well-known, Brandon.
We know her from... well, from the time she was really little.
Actually, her older sister started acting in a very young age, so this shadow
that she's been living in is one that's probably quite large.
So it's impressive.
That is impressive.
And I could imagine it would be difficult living in that situation - knowing
that your older sister is very popular,
but you also want to pursue or go after an acting career.
It's difficult to be in the limelight, but she has been successful with that.
Well, we see: Last summer she starred in Steven Spielberg's hit sci-fi flick
Super 8.
Now "flick" is just another way of saying movie.
It's an informal way of saying a movie.
It's an old-fashioned, informal way of referring to a movie.
Sometimes we hear the word "chick flick" refers to this here.
Well, Super 8 was a very famous movie.
We did talk about it last year in Studio Classroom.
And I hope all of you got the chance to see it.
It was a very good sci-fi movie about children making a movie.
And she was absolutely fabulous in it.
I really enjoyed her performance.
That's right.
And "sci-fi" meaning science fiction, so something about the future.
If it's a sci-fi movie, it's something usually that has to do with events in the
future.
And so that's exactly what Super 8, that category it falls under is sci-fi.
Well, right now it's time for us to visit Ken in the Chat Room.
(Music).
Thank you.
Wow! That person's hair is so blonde.
It sure is.
He just dyed it a few weeks ago.
Why would anyone want to dye their hair blonde?
Don't forget the popular saying, Ken: Blondes have more fun.
Blondes? You mean blonde people?
Of course.
People with blonde hair are simply called blondes.
Oh. That's new to me.
I thought "blonde" was only an adjective.
Are there other nouns that describe people with different hair color?
Sure. You can talk of brunettes or redheads.
I'm assuming redheads have red hair.
But what color of hair do brunettes have?
Brunettes have dark or dark brown color hair.
Oh. So Tom Cruise is a brunette.
No. Burnetts are always women.
Blondes could be either men or women, but most people would assume that you're
talking about a woman.
Bryan, your hair is kind of dark brown color, but I can't call you a brunette,
right?
Right. Please don't.
What about people like me who have dark black hair? Is there a noun to describe
us?
Not really.
You would use the adjective dark-haired.
So you might refer to me as a dark-haired man?
Perhaps.
But I like "Ken" better.
Yeah, me too.
